    Roles of general versus second language (L2) knowledge in L2 reading comprehension

    We examined the roles of metacognitive awareness of reading strategies, syntactic awareness in English, and English vocabulary knowledge in the English reading comprehension of Chinese-speaking university students (n = 278). Results suggested a two-factor model of a General Reading Knowledge factor (metacognitive awareness employed during the English reading process) and a Second Language (L2) Specific Knowledge factor (comprising vocabulary knowledge and syntactic awareness) offered the best fit to the data; 87% of the variance in reading comprehension was explained by the two factors together. L2 Specific Knowledge was a stronger predictor of reading comprehension than metacognitive awareness. A multigroup analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling to compare poor-reader and good-reader groups. The correlation between the L2 Specific Knowledge and metacognitive awareness and their relations to reading comprehension was the same across groups

    The aim of the study was to explain the relationships between self-regulated learning strategy use and academic achievement of 6th-grade students in South Korea. An existing database (i.e., the Korean Educational Longitudinal Study; KELS) with 6th-grade students (n = 7,065) from 446 schools was used to run a series of 2-level hierarchical linear models (HLM). This large dataset enabled us to consider how the relationship between learners’ self-regulated learning strategy use and academic achievement may differ at individual and school levels. We found that students’ metacognition and effort regulation positively predicted their literacy and math achievement both within and across schools. The average literacy and math achievement were significantly higher in private schools than in public schools. Also, the math achievement of urban schools was significantly higher than in non-urban schools when controlling other cognitive and behavioral learning strategies. This study on 6th-grade learners’ self-regulated learning (SRL) on academic achievement explores how their SRL strategies may be different from the features of successful adult learners from the previous findings, offering new insights into the development of SRL in elementary education

    Increasing Academic Motivation in Primary Grades

    This review of research into motivation begins with the various approaches to increasing academic engagement that have been validated in studies, especially in the past quarter century. Two brief case studies of exceptionally engaging primary teachers, both working in Catholic schools, follow. General findings from qualitative studies of primary grade teaching affirm that engaging teachers fill their classrooms with instruction that promotes motivation and do little that undermines student motivation. This contrasts will less engaging teachers who do less that is motivating and more that undermines academic motivation. Thus, every minute of every day the engaging teachers do what the best educational motivation researchers have identified as effective. The review concludes by recognizing that such engaging instruction is consistent with Catholic philosophy of education
