Social-Emotional Competencies In Pre-service Teachers
Teachers\u27 social-emotional competencies (SECs) are crucial elements to effectively facilitate the implementation of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs, the development of students\u27 SECs, and their own capacity to manage job stress. However, there is little research on teachers\u27 SECs, the factors that contribute to their development, and their relationship with teachers’ psychological well-being. The two studies in this dissertation attempt to address research gaps in the literature on teachers’ and pre-service teachers’ SECs.
The first study aimed to develop a structured conceptualization of teachers\u27 SECs and identify the competencies that pre-service teachers most value in the classroom. The second study examined possible predisposing factors (i.e., resilience, self-efficacy, empathy) that could be associated with the development of pre-service teachers\u27 SECs. The second study also determined the effect of pre-service teachers\u27 SECs on their levels of well-being over and above predisposing factors. In the first study, first-year pre-service teachers from the Social Emotional Learning course participated in a group concept mapping activity in the fall semester of 2018; 54 pre-service teachers completed the brainstorming activity in the first phase, but only ten volunteered for the second phase to sort, label, and rate statements. Results from the concept mapping activity indicated that pre-service teachers identified attributes such as teachers\u27 communication, leadership, social traits, cognitive, and emotional skills, as well as their ability to build a learning community, create a learning community, and enhance their professional practice as descriptors of socially and emotionally competent teachers. Based on participant ratings, teachers\u27 ability to model the behaviour they want their students to exhibit and their ability to establish positive communication with their students are viewed as the most valuable skills to facilitate the social-emotional learning curricula in the classroom. In the second study, 97 first-year pre-service teachers completed online surveys in the fall semester of 2017. Results from the online surveys revealed that pre-service teachers\u27 resilience was a significant predictor of SEC levels and psychological well-being. In a similar manner to resilience, pre-service teachers\u27 SECs were weak predictors of psychological well-being. However, after controlling for resilience, pre-service teachers’ SECs were no longer predictors of psychological well-being

Power to imagination: An ethnography of imaginary play between children and adults at an afterschool program
In this dissertation study I employ ethnographic research methods to explore play at a multi-generational, multi-cultural afterschool program. Drawing on the New Childhoods perspective and drawing on sociocultural and cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) approaches to learning, I explored the ways that children enacted and transformed their social worlds in and through play with peers, undergraduate college students, and researchers. The study analyzed the development of activities in the afterschool program, and the ways that adults employed mediation strategies that facilitated, supported, or constrained children’s play. Findings show that adults had to (re)learn how to play and re-imagine themselves as collaborators of play. Findings have practical and methodological implications for anthropological research and afterschool programming

Targeting a Pre-mRNA Structure with Bipartite Antisense Molecules Modulates Tau Alternative Splicing
Approximately 15% of human genetic diseases are estimated to involve dysregulation of alternative pre-mRNA splicing. Antisense molecules designed to alter these and other splicing events typically target continuous linear sequences of the message. Here, we show that a structural feature in a pre-mRNA can be targeted by bipartite antisense molecules designed to hybridize with the discontinuous elements that flank the structure and thereby alter splicing. We targeted a hairpin structure at the boundary between exon 10 and intron 10 of the pre-mRNA of tau. Mutations in this region that are associated with certain forms of frontotemporal dementia, destabilize the hairpin to cause increased inclusion of exon 10. Via electrophoretic mobility shift and RNase protection assays, we demonstrate that bipartite antisense molecules designed to simultaneously interact with the available sequences that immediately flank the tau pre-mRNA hairpin do indeed bind to this structured region. Moreover, these agents inhibit exon 10 splicing and reverse the effect of destabilizing disease-causing mutations, in both in vitro splicing assays and cell culture. This general bipartite antisense strategy could be employed to modulate other splicing events that are regulated by RNA secondary structure
Proposta de intervenção educativa em pacientes idosos com hipertensão arterial sistêmica no municipio senhora de Oliveira
Dados oferecidos pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS, 2014) indicam que há perto de 600 milhões de hipertensos no mundo. A doença atinge, em média, 25% da população brasileira, chegando a mais de 50% na terceira idade. Vários fatores de risco contribuem para o aumento da prevalência da hipertensão arterial em idosos; tais como: sedentarismo, ingestão excessiva de sal, alcoolismo, tabagismo e obesidade entre outros. Realiza se um estudo descritivo prospectivo com o objetivo de elaborar um projeto de intervenção educativa que permita modificação dos hábitos e estilos de vida e controle da Hipertensão Arterial em pacientes idosos. O trabalho foi desenvolvido na Estratégia de Saúde da família da UBS Edgar Alfenas, localizada Município Senhora de Oliveira, do Estado Minas Gerais - (MG). A população atendida pela nossa equipe é de 3176 pessoas, das quais 654 pacientes tem Hipertensão Arterial sistêmica (HAS) e dessas 528 são idosas. A metodologia utilizada foi à revisão narrativa constituindo a seleção e analise de literaturas com a interpretação crítica pessoal de cada autor. As principais propostas apresentadas foram fomentar conhecimentos acerca da Hipertensão Arterial e fatores de risco, adoção de hábitos e estilos de vida saudáveis pelos idosos hipertensos, e organizar agendas para o atendimento dos idosos hipertensos com fatores de risco, assim como aumentar as atividades de promoção e prevenção em saúd

Plan de estudios y satisfacción en estudiantes de educación de la Universidad San Pedro Trujillo
El estudio se efectúa con un principal objetivo, señalar el vínculo entre el Plan de estudios con la Satisfacción en estudiantes de Educación de la Universidad San Pedro de Trujillo, en todo su contexto de enseñanza-aprendizaje. De la metodología: El tipo de investigación es básica y diseño descriptivo - correlacional con método de estudio cuantitativo, con una muestra de 48 estudiantes tomados de las escuelas de inicial y primaria entre ambos sexos de diferentes turnos. Se aplicó el instrumento de un cuestionario con diez dimensiones, para determinar la satisfacción en estudiantes de Gento y Vivas y otro instrumento para el plan de estudios validado por juicio de expertos, el desarrollo de los resultados fue a través del programa SPSS estadística con frecuencia y porcentajes acumulados. Finalmente, en los resultados mencionados refleja que de las 10 dimensiones: 5 satisfechos, 4 poco satisfechos y 1 se encuentra totalmente insatisfecho, lo que demuestra que existe relación positiva entre el Plan de estudios con la Satisfacción de los estudiantes de la facultad de educación de la universidad San Pedro de Trujillo-2017.Tesi
