    Photon-number-resolving segmented avalanche-photodiode detectors

    We investigate the feasibility and performance of photon-number-resolved photodetection employing avalanche photodiodes (APDs) with low dark counts. The main idea is to split n photons over m modes such that every mode has no more than one photon, which is detected alongside propagation by an APD.     Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, characterized by progressive premature aging and early death in the first or second decade of life, usually secondary to cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction and stroke). We report a case of a 14-year-old boy with progeria syndrome and cardiac arrest due to myocardial infarction, who was submitted to an immediate coronary angiography which revealed left main stem and three-vessel coronary artery disease. A prompt double bypass coronary artery grafting surgery was performed, and, despite successful coronary reperfusion, the patient remained in coma and brain death was declared on fourth day after surgery.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Bioprospecting of yeasts for amylase production in solid state fermentation and evaluation of the catalytic properties of enzymatic extracts

    Profiling microorganisms with potential for amylase production in low cost culture media has been widely recognized due to its broad applicability. The aim of this study was to select yeast strains with potential to produce amylolytic enzymes by solid state fermentation. Fifty-four (54) strains were assessed and three exhibited ability to produce amylases: Candida parapsilosis with 14.68 U/mL (146.8 U/g substrate); Rhodotorula mucilaginosa with 25.0 U/mL (250 U/g substrate), and Candida glabrata with 25.39 U/mL (253.9 U/g substrate), in solid state fermentation, for 120 h at 28°C, using wheat bran with 70% moisture. The enzymes exhibited maximum activity at a pH of 7.0 and at 60°C. Amylases demonstrated satisfactory structural stability, maintaining their catalytic activity after 1 h at 50°C. All enzymes were ethanol tolerant and retained more than 70% of their original activities in 15% ethanol solution. Corn starch was efficiently hydrolyzed by enzymes and the extracts produced by C. parapsilosis and C. glabrata exhibited dextrinizing activity, while those produced by R. mucilaginosa exhibited saccharifying activity. Key words: Candida parapsilosis, Candida glabrata, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, dextrinizing and saccharifying activit

    Association of Trypanosoma vivax in extracellular sites with central nervous system lesions and changes in cerebrospinal fluid in experimentally infected goats

    Changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and anatomical and histopathological central nervous system (CNS) lesions were evaluated, and the presence of Trypanosoma vivax in CNS tissues was investigated through PCR. Twelve adult male goats were divided into three groups (G): G1, infected with T. vivax and evaluated during the acute phase; G2, infected goats evaluated during the chronic phase; and G3, consisting of non-infected goats. Each goat from G1 and G2 was infected with 1.25 × 105 trypomastigotes. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and investigation of T. vivax was performed at the 15th day post-infection (dpi) in G1 goats and on the fifth day after the manifestation of nervous system infection signs in G2 goats. All goats were necropsied, and CNS fragments from G1 and G2 goats were evaluated by PCR for the determination of T. vivax. Hyperthermia, anemia and parasitemia were observed from the fifth dpi for G1 and G2, with the highest parasitemia peak between the seventh and 21st dpi. Nervous system infection signs were observed in three G2 goats between the 30th and 35th dpi. CSF analysis revealed the presence of T. vivax for G2. Meningitis and meningoencephalitis were diagnosed in G2. PCR were positive for T. vivax in all the samples tested. In conclusion, T. vivax may reach the nervous tissue resulting in immune response from the host, which is the cause of progressive clinical and pathological manifestations of the CNS in experimentally infected goats

    Addressing drinking water salinity due to sea water intrusion in Praia de Leste, Parana, by a brackish water desalination pilot plant

    Seawater intrusion into the Pombas River, source of freshwater to Praia de Leste on the coast of Parana in Brazil presents a problem to the water utility as most water treatment plants in Brazil are conventional. To find a solution to this problem, a pilot plant (1 m3 /h) consisting of ultrafiltration (UF) followed by reverse osmosis (RO) was developed and evaluated. For testing, brackish water was produced with a concentration of 1,500 ± 100 mg/L of total dissolved solids (TDS), mixing seawater and fresh water. To evaluate the water quality, TDS, electrical conductivity, pH, temperature, apparent color, turbidity, alkalinity, total hardness, calcium, chloride and sulfate were monitored. For operational performance, flowrates, osmotic pressure, filtration rate, recovery rate and mass balance were analyzed. On average, the UF system removed 96.4% of turbidity and 98.6% of apparent color; whereas the RO system removed 99.4% of TDS. The overall average recovery (UF and RO) was 45.81% with average osmotic pressure of 8.21 bar, filtration rate of 30.7 L/h/m2 in the UF system and 21.7 L/h/m2 in the RO system.     Towards conductive textiles: coating polymeric fibres with graphene

We demonstrate a method to make common insulating textile fibres conductive, by coating them with graphene. The resulting fibres display sheet resistance values as low as 600 Ωsq−1, demonstrating that the high conductivity of graphene is not lost when transferred to textile fibres. An extensive microscopic study of the surface of graphene-coated fibres is presented. We show that this method can be employed to textile fibres of different materials, sizes and shapes, and to different types of graphene.     Effect of genotype, finishing system, and sex on physiochemical characteristics of goat meat

    Seventy-eight kids of both sexes and five genotypes were used: Alpine, 1/2 Boer + 1/2 Alpine (1/2 BA), 3/4 Boer + Alpine, 1/2 Anglo-nubian + 1/2 Alpine and "tricross" (1/2 Anglo-nubian + 1/4 Boer + 1/4 Alpine) with initial average weight of 14.1 +/- 2.5. The objective was to evaluate the effect of genotype, finishing system, and sex on the physiochemical characteristics of goat meat. Finishing systems were: ST1 - kid + dam in pasture and ST2 - weaned kid and feedlot. Kids in ST1 were kept in an area with Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania, and after grazing, water and mineral salt/mix were fed ad libitum to the animals. The animals in ST2 - were confined in collective pens distributed according to genotypes and received diet with 16% CP and 73% TDN. The values of pH, a(star) (red content), Cooking Loss (CL), and Ether Extract (EE) percentage were influenced by genotype. Values for red content (a(star)) and L-star (brightness), CL and percentages of moisture, protein, EE, and ash were influenced by the finishing system. Longissimus dorsi muscle from animals 1/2 BA exhibited better physiochemical characteristics. For greater tenderness and higher percentages of fat, consumers should choose female kid goat meat.31499299
