Silver nanoparticles loaded on Cu-doped TiO2 for the effective reduction of nitro-aromatic contaminants

    Get PDF
"The addition of Cu species via copper glycine complexes as a strategy for doping the TiO2 structure during the sol–gel process produces a copper–TiO2-based composite. The combination of the copper–TiO2-based composite with the practical UV functionalization of highly dispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), 3 nm, results in an efficient photocatalyst for eliminating 4-nitrophenol as a model of nitro-aromatic contaminant. This novel Ag/TiO2–Cu composite achieved the effective photoreduction of 4-nitrophenol into the valuable 4-aminophenol in approximately 30 min with high conversion (96%). A possible reduction mechanism of aromatic nitro compounds into amines in aqueous alkaline medium is discussed, considering the interfacial fast charge transfer during the in situ reduction of copper by the presence of hydrazine as a sacrificial electron donor.

Montmorillonite has been treated with Ti-based solutions, alone or doped with Cu2 +, Fe3 + or Cr3 + cations, yielding new intercalated solids, which have been calcined at various temperatures to test the stability of the so-formed pillars. The solids calcined at 500 °C were fully characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermal analyses, nitrogen adsorption and acidity evaluation. The evolution of the specific surface area, porosity and acidic properties is discussed, analysing the effect of pillaring and doping procedures on these propertie

Masa muscular, fuerza isométrica y dinámica en las extremidades inferiores de niños y adolescentes con síndrome de Down

    Get PDF
Generally it has been observed that population with Down syndrome (DS) has lower levels of muscular strength compared with others without DS. It is also known a deficit between muscular mass between adults with and without DS. However, there are no studies until the date which evaluated muscular mass in paediatric populations. Our study pretends to show whether also in earlier ages it does exist a deficit in the muscular mass and also to relate both values. Children and adolescents with and without DS (15±3 y 14±3 years respectively) from the study had similar values of muscular mass adjusted by height and puberal status, but DS group obtained lower values in all strength parameters. In addition, DS group also performed less kilograms of strength by kilogram of muscular mass. Some physiological or transmission impairment could explain this lack of strength as it known that there are not deficit in the muscular mass. Specific and adapted for this population training programs should be promoted to check whether an enhancement in their muscular strength is possible.Peer Reviewe

Objectives: To evaluate and compare the influence of posterior gummy smile on the perception of smile esthetics by orthodontists, general-dentists and laypersons. Study Design: A frontal photograph of a smile with normal gum exposure was chosen and manipulated digitally using Adobe Photoshop C3 to generate three further images with posterior gum exposure of 4, 6 and 8mm. These four images were assessed by the three evaluator groups: orthodontists (n=40), general-dentists (n=40) and laypersons (n=40). Both orthodontists and dentists had at least ten years professional experience and laypersons were aged between 40-50 years. The proportion of men to women was 20:20 in each group. Evaluators awarded a score to the smile esthetics of each image: 1=acceptable, 2=moderately acceptable, 3=unacceptable. Afterwards, each evaluator placed the four images in order of esthetic preference. Results: No significant differences (p>0.05) were detected between the three evaluator groups for the photo without posterior gummy smile. The perception of smile esthetics for a the 4mm posterior gummy smile (median for orthodontists=2, general-dentists= 1, laypersons=1), the 6mm (median for orthodontists=2, general-dentists=1, laypersons=1) and the 8mm (median for orthodontists=3, general-dentists=2, laypersons=2) was significantly different between orthodontists and the other two evaluator groups (p<0.0017). The three evaluator groups coincided in placing the image with the 6mm gum exposure in first place in order of esthetic preference. Conclusions: Posterior gummy smile influences the perception of smile esthetics more negatively among orthodontists than the rest of the groups

Meta-analyses in management: what can we learn from clinical research?

    Get PDF
We analyze the weaknesses of meta-analyses (MAs) in management research using as benchmark a scientific field where this technique shows a longer tradition: clinical research. We suggest four areas in which management research MA practices should improve: (1) availability of information and replicability of primary research, (2) correct application of statistical support, (3) execution of heterogeneity analyses, and (4) standardization of result reporting. Using a representative MA on an operations management topic, we identify qualitatively the aspects to be improved at each stage. We show the different results that could have been achieved by following standard procedures in clinical research, incorporating different “good practices” from this research field. Overall, these recommendations aim at improving the transparency and replicability of MAs, which can not only facilitate the accumulation of scientific knowledge but also intensify the dialogue between academia and practitioners.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad | Ref.
