Abstract ∙ We present information on two cases of color aberrations in two species of vultures: one individual of Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) in Mexico and one of Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) in Costa Rica. Both cases were determined to be ino, wherein birds have very pale brown eumelanin. We discuss these two cases and compare them with other cases of abnormally colored vultures from several island and mainland areas in America.

There are few studies on the treatment of biodiversity in the Primary Education curriculum. There are even less on the didactic transposition of the Scientific Knowledge behind this concept to the Laws on Education. This study tries to delve into the quality of that step by offering both with a qualitative and quantitative analysis on biodiversity’s transposition; referred to both the national level and Andalusia one. Major mistakes and shortcomings of the transposition are analyzed, and possible updates are pointed out while comparing national and regional scopes. Also, we assess the chronological evolution of the process through various laws up the current LOMCE; we found biodiversity’s transposition is incomplete, unbalanced and unstructured, with differences between the national and regional level; finally, no significant learning on biodiversity seems to be guaranteed. Keywords: biodiversity; didactic transposition; elementary curriculum; educational law. The Atticus code. Tribute to Professor Javier de Lucas Martín

    Get PDF
Javier de Lucas has successfully and rigorously tackled many research topics in his long academic life. From immigration, racism and xenophobia, to civil disobedience and conscientious objection, through his doctoral thesis on Durkheim or his work on classics such as Condorcet, the concept of solidarity, tolerance, the principle of sovereignty, the paternalistic justification of power, secrecy and transparency or the Kantian principle of publicity, among many others. This brief article, however, focuses on a very specific content of his enormous work: the Atticus code and its relationship with the ideal of the rule of law and democracy

This Project will develop parameters related to control and safety; through telecommunication means, to provide a solution to the handling of electrical and electronic devices. Hearing regeneration and regenerative medicine: present and future approaches

    Get PDF
More than 5% of the world population lives with a hearing impairment. The main factors responsible for hearing degeneration are ototoxic drugs, aging, continued exposure to excessive noise and infections. The pool of adult stem cells in the inner ear drops dramatically after birth, and therefore an endogenous cellular source for regeneration is absent. Hearing loss can emerge after the degeneration of different cochlear components, so there are multiple targets to be reached, such as hair cells (HCs), spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs), supporting cells (SCs) and ribbon synapses. Important discoveries in the hearing regeneration field have been reported regarding stem cell transplantation, migration and survival; genetic systems for cell fate monitoring; and stem cell differentiation to HCs, SGNs and SCs using adult stem cells, embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells. Moreover, some molecular mediators that affect the establishment of functional synapses have been identified. In this review, we will focus on reporting the state of the art in the regenerative medicine field for hearing recovery. Stem cell research has enabled remarkable advances in regeneration, particularly in neuronal cells and synapses. Despite the progress achieved, there are certain issues that need a deeper development to improve the results already obtained, or to develop new approaches aiming for the clinical application.Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (Project CTQ2014-56611-R)Regional Government of Andalusia (Project P11-CTS-7651)Ramón Areces Foundation (Madrid, Spain

The Construction of Stations and Tunnels by Slurry Trecnch, Method in the Madrid Metro Extension

Recently a new Extension of the Madrid Subway (Spain) is carried out (1995-2003). In 8 years more of 105 Km of tunnels are builded by several procedures: Traditional non-mechanized excavation, precast linings by E.P.B machines, cut and cover system, etc. In this paper the basic criteria adopted for the design of tunnels and stations built with the cut and cover method (reinforced concrete continuous and discontinuous walls) are analysed. Initially, to this purpose the geotechnical properties of the Madrid ground are reached, in order to establish a group of unified desion geotechnical parameters. The hypotheses made for the numerical analysis of in situ walls are shown (calculation model, water pressures, etc), together with the installed instrumentation and the obtained results
