PFTijah: text search in an XML database system
This paper introduces the PFTijah system, a text search system that is integrated with an XML/XQuery database management system. We present examples of its use, we explain some of the system internals, and discuss plans for future work. PFTijah is part of the open source release of MonetDB/XQuery
Force direction patterns promote whole body stability even in hip-flexed walking, but not upper body stability in human upright walking
Directing the ground reaction forces to a focal point above the centre of mass of the whole body promotes whole body stability in human and animal gaits similar to a physical pendulum. Here we show that this is the case in human hip-flexed walking as well. For all upper body orientations (upright, 25°, 50°, maximum), the focal point was well above the centre of mass of the whole body, suggesting its general relevance for walking. Deviations of the forces' lines of action from the focal point increased with upper body inclination from 25 to 43 mm root mean square deviation (RMSD). With respect to the upper body in upright gait, the resulting force also passed near a focal point (17 mm RMSD between the net forces' lines of action and focal point), but this point was 18 cm below its centre of mass. While this behaviour mimics an unstable inverted pendulum, it leads to resulting torques of alternating sign in accordance with periodic upper body motion and probably provides for low metabolic cost of upright gait by keeping hip torques small. Stabilization of the upper body is a consequence of other mechanisms, e.g. hip reflexes or muscle preflexes
Unconventional magnetism in all-carbon nanofoam
We report production of nanostructured carbon foam by a high-repetition-rate,
high-power laser ablation of glassy carbon in Ar atmosphere. A combination of
characterization techniques revealed that the system contains both sp2 and sp3
bonded carbon atoms. The material is a novel form of carbon in which
graphite-like sheets fill space at very low density due to strong hyperbolic
curvature, as proposed for ?schwarzite?. The foam exhibits ferromagnetic-like
behaviour up to 90 K, with a narrow hysteresis curve and a high saturation
magnetization. Such magnetic properties are very unusual for a carbon
allotrope. Detailed analysis excludes impurities as the origin of the magnetic
signal. We postulate that localized unpaired spins occur because of topological
and bonding defects associated with the sheet curvature, and that these spins
are stabilized due to the steric protection offered by the convoluted sheets.Comment: 14 pages, including 2 tables and 7 figs. Submitted to Phys Rev B 10

A comparison of the Nordtest and Japanese test methods for the moisture buffering performance of building materials
Two test methods, one worked out in a Nordtest project and the other available as a Japanese Industrial Standard, both developed to characterize building materials with respect to moisture buffering performance, are analyzed in detail by a numerical study on four different materials. Both test methods are based on a similar kind of dynamic loading, but the specifications of each test protocol vary. Therefore, the sensitivity of the test protocols is investigated by varying different protocol parameters. Subsequently, the practical applicability of the obtained values is investigated by confronting the values obtained for the four materials with the dynamic response of a small room with each of the materials used in turns as finishing material. Finally, the results determined according to the dynamic test protocol are compared with values calculated from steady-state material data.status: publishe

Generation of spin currents via Raman scattering
We show theoretically that stimulated spin flip Raman scattering can be used
to inject spin currents in doped semiconductors with spin split bands. A pure
spin current, where oppositely oriented spins move in opposite directions, can
be injected in zincblende crystals and structures. The calculated spin current
should be detectable by pump-probe optical spectroscopy and anomalous Hall
effect measurement
Electronic structure of the muonium center as a shallow donor in ZnO
The electronic structure and the location of muonium centers (Mu) in
single-crystalline ZnO were determined for the first time. Two species of Mu
centers with extremely small hyperfine parameters have been observed below 40
K. Both Mu centers have an axial-symmetric hyperfine structure along with a
[0001] axis, indicating that they are located at the AB_{O,//} and BC_{//}
sites. It is inferred from their small ionization energy (~6 meV and 50 meV)
and hyperfine parameters (~10^{-4} times the vacuum value) that these centers
behave as shallow donors, strongly suggesting that hydrogen is one of the
primary origins of n type conductivity in as-grown ZnO.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
A note on the impact of economic regulation on life satisfaction
Are people happier if they experience freedom from regulation, and how do individual attitudes towards liberalisation influence personal life satisfaction? Based on data from European and World Values Surveys and the Economic Freedom of the World project we find evidence for positive effects of low regulation and pro-market attitudes on life satisfaction. Paradoxically, people who are opposed to market oriented policies sometimes benefit most from deregulation
