Higher gait variability is associated with decreased parietal gray matter volume among healthy older adults
The objectives of this study were to examine the association of stride time variability (STV) with gray and white matter volumes in healthy older adults, and to determine the specific location of any parenchymal loss associated with higher STV. A total of 71 participants (mean age 69.0 +/- 0.8 years; 59.7 % female) were included in this study. All participants had a 1.0 Tesla 3D T1-weighted MRI of the brain to measure gray and white matter volumes. STV was measured at steady-state self-selected walking speed using an electronic footswitch system. We found an association between higher STV and lower gray matter volume in the right parietal lobe (e.g., angular gyrus, Brodmann area 39, cluster corrected pFWE = 0.035). There were no significant associations between STV and higher gray matter volume or change in white matter volume. To the best of our knowledge this study is the first to identify a significant association of higher STV with lower right parietal gray matter volume in healthy older adults
Association between ambulatory 24-hour blood pressure levels and brain volume reduction: a cross-sectional elderly population-based study
Previous literature has shown mixed results regarding the association between blood pressure levels and brain volume reduction. The objectives of this study were to determine whether high blood pressure levels were associated with focal brain volume reduction and whether high blood pressure-related focal brain volume reduction was associated with a decline in executive function performance. On the basis of a cross-sectional design, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure measurements, as well as brain morphology from 3-dimensional magnetic resonance images, were assessed among 183 participants (mean, 65 +/- 0.6 years; 62.4% women). Average levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressures, as well as dip, pulse pressure, and mean arterial blood pressure, were used as outcomes. Cortical gray and white matter volumes were determined by automatic calculation using Statistical Parametric Mapping segmentation. Folstein\u27s Mini-Mental State Examination, digit span, part B of Trail Making, and Stroop tests were used to assess executive function performance. Sex, use of antihypertensive drugs, duration of hypertension, leukoaraiosis, body mass index, education level, and total brain matter volume were used as potential confounders. A significant blood pressure-related decrease in gray matter volume of the left supplementary motor areas (Brodmann area 6) and of the left superior and middle frontal gyrus (Brodmann area 8) was shown. No significant decrease was found with white matter volume. Blood pressure-related decreases in gray matter volume were significantly associated with a decline in executive function performance. The association of high blood pressure with brain volume reduction may in part explain blood pressure-related cognitive decline leading to dementia
Exercise electrocardiogram in middle-aged and older leisure time sportsmen: 100 exercise tests would be enough to identify one silent myocardial ischemia at risk for cardiac event
BACKGROUND: The importance of exercise electrocardiogram (ECG) has been controversial in the prevention of cardiac events among sportsmen. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of silent myocardial ischemia (SMI) from an exercise ECG and its relationship with induced coronary angiographic assessment and potentially preventable cardiac events.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included leisure time asymptomatic sportsmen over 35years old, referred from 2011 to 2014 in the Sports Medicine Unit of the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne.
RESULTS: Of the cohort of 1500 sportsmen (1205 men; mean age 50.7±9.4years; physical activity level 32.8±26.8MET-h/week), 951 (63%) had at least one cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor. Family history, medical examination and standard resting 12-lead were collected. A total of 163 exercise ECGs (10.9%) were defined as positive, most of them due to SMI (n=129, 8.6%). SMI was an indication for coronary angiography in 23 cases, leading to 17 documented SMIs (1.1%), including 11 significant stenoses requiring revascularization. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, a high risk of CVD (OR=2.65 [CI 95%: 1.33-5.27], p=0.005) and an age >50years (OR=2.71 [CI 95%: 1.65-4.44], p<0.0001) were independently associated with confirmed SMI.
CONCLUSIONS: The association of positive exercise ECG with significant coronary stenosis was stronger among sportsmen with CVD risk factors and older than 50years. Screening by exercise ECG can lower the risk of cardiac events in middle-aged and older sportsmen. One hundred tests would be enough to detect one silent myocardial ischemia at risk for cardiac event
Full Counting Statistics of Multiple Andreev Reflections in incoherent diffusive superconducting junctions
We present a theory for the full distribution of current fluctuations in
incoherent diffusive superconducting junctions, subjected to a voltage bias.
This theory of full counting statistics of incoherent multiple Andreev
reflections is valid for arbitrary applied voltage. We present a detailed
discussion of the properties of the first four cumulants as well as the low and
high voltage regimes of the full counting statistics. The work is an extension

Electron scattering in multi-wall carbon-nanotubes
We analyze two scattering mechanisms that might cause intrinsic electronic
resistivity in multi-wall carbon nanotubes: scattering by dopant impurities,
and scattering by inter-tube electron-electron interaction. We find that for
typically doped multi-wall tubes backward scattering at dopants is by far the

Modelling the electric field applied to a tokamak
The vector potential for the Ohmic heating coil system of a tokamak is
obtained in semi-analytical form. Comparison is made to the potential of a
simple, finite solenoid. In the quasi-static limit, the time rate of change of
the potential determines the induced electromotive force through the

Cycloidal CT with CNN-based sinogram completion and in-scan generation of training data
In x-ray computed tomography (CT), the achievable image resolution is typically limited by several pre-fixed characteristics of the x-ray source and detector. Structuring the x-ray beam using a mask with alternating opaque and transmitting septa can overcome this limit. However, the use of a mask imposes an undersampling problem: to obtain complete datasets, significant lateral sample stepping is needed in addition to the sample rotation, resulting in high x-ray doses and long acquisition times. Cycloidal CT, an alternative scanning scheme by which the sample is rotated and translated simultaneously, can provide high aperture-driven resolution without sample stepping, resulting in a lower radiation dose and faster scans. However, cycloidal sinograms are incomplete and must be restored before tomographic images can be computed. In this work, we demonstrate that high-quality images can be reconstructed by applying the recently proposed Mixed Scale Dense (MS-D) convolutional neural network (CNN) to this task. We also propose a novel training approach by which training data are acquired as part of each scan, thus removing the need for large sets of pre-existing reference data, the acquisition of which is often not practicable or possible. We present results for both simulated datasets and real-world data, showing that the combination of cycloidal CT and machine learning-based data recovery can lead to accurate high-resolution images at a limited dose.Algorithms and the Foundations of Software technolog
