Espectro clínico, imagiológico e etiológico da síndrome de encefalopatia posterior reversível
Objective Analyze the cases of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) admitted in a Neurology Department during an 8-year period. Method Retrospective observational study in a central hospital in the north of Portugal. Results 14 patients were identified, mean age 52.3 years. Precipitating factors included: eclampsia, isolated arterial hypertension, spinal trauma and autonomic dysreflexia, Guillain-Barré syndrome, sepsis, sarcoidosis and pulmonary cryptococcosis and drugs. Most patients presented posterior-predominant vasogenic edema lesions, however 64.2% presented frontal lesions and in 42.8% cerebellum was involved. Four patients also had acute ischemic lesions and 1 had hemorrhagic lesions. During follow-up 10 patients recovered fully, 2 recovered partially, 1 suffered a recurrence and 2 died in hospital. Conclusion PRES has many etiological factors. The terms posterior and reversible should be revised because PRES frequently involves other brain regions and it is not always reversible. PRES patients may develop life-threatening complications and mortality is not negligible
Characterization and Evaluation of Layered Bi2WO6 Nanosheets as a New Antibacterial Agent
Background: Pathogenic microorganisms are causing increasing cases of mortality and morbidity, along with alarming rates of ineffectiveness as a result of acquired antimicrobial resistance. Bi2WO6 showed good potential to be used as an antibacterial substance when exposed to visible light. This study demonstrates for the first time the dimension-dependent antibacterial activity of layered Bi2WO6 nanosheets. Materials and methods: The synthesized layered Bi2WO6 nanosheets were prepared by the hydrothermal method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Antibacterial and antibiotic-modulation activities were performed in triplicate by the microdilution method associated with visible light irradiation (LEDs). Results: Bi2WO6 nanosheets were effective against all types of bacteria tested, with MIC values of 256 µg/mL against Escherichia coli standard and resistant strains, and 256 µg/mL and 32 µg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus standard and resistant strains, respectively. Two-dimensional (2D) Bi2WO6 nanosheets showed antibacterial efficiency against both strains studied without the presence of light. Conclusions: Layered Bi2WO6 nanosheets revealed dimension-dependent antibacterial activity of the Bi2WO6 system. The authors thank Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico— CNPq, Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior—CAPES, and Fundação Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico—FUNCAP (Proc. Linearized stability analysis of gravastars in noncommutative geometry
In this work, we find exact gravastar solutions in the context of
noncommutative geometry, and explore their physical properties and
characteristics. The energy density of these geometries is a smeared and
particle-like gravitational source, where the mass is diffused throughout a
region of linear dimension due to the intrinsic uncertainty
encoded in the coordinate commutator. These solutions are then matched to an
exterior Schwarzschild spacetime. We further explore the dynamical stability of
the transition layer of these gravastars, for the specific case of
, where M is the black hole mass, to linearized
spherically symmetric radial perturbations about static equilibrium solutions.
It is found that large stability regions exist and, in particular, located
sufficiently close to where the event horizon is expected to form.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Planck intermediate results. XLI. A map of lensing-induced B-modes
The secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) -modes stem from the
post-decoupling distortion of the polarization -modes due to the
gravitational lensing effect of large-scale structures. These lensing-induced
-modes constitute both a valuable probe of the dark matter distribution and
an important contaminant for the extraction of the primary CMB -modes from
inflation. Planck provides accurate nearly all-sky measurements of both the
polarization -modes and the integrated mass distribution via the
reconstruction of the CMB lensing potential. By combining these two data
products, we have produced an all-sky template map of the lensing-induced
-modes using a real-space algorithm that minimizes the impact of sky masks.
The cross-correlation of this template with an observed (primordial and
secondary) -mode map can be used to measure the lensing -mode power
spectrum at multipoles up to . In particular, when cross-correlating with
the -mode contribution directly derived from the Planck polarization maps,
we obtain lensing-induced -mode power spectrum measurement at a significance
level of , which agrees with the theoretical expectation derived
from the Planck best-fit CDM model. This unique nearly all-sky
secondary -mode template, which includes the lensing-induced information
from intermediate to small () angular scales, is
delivered as part of the Planck 2015 public data release. It will be
particularly useful for experiments searching for primordial -modes, such as
BICEP2/Keck Array or LiteBIRD, since it will enable an estimate to be made of
the lensing-induced contribution to the measured total CMB -modes.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures; Accepted for publication in A&A; The B-mode map

Global and decomposition evolutionary support vector machine approaches for time series forecasting
Multi-step ahead Time Series Forecasting (TSF) is a key tool for support- ing tactical decisions (e.g., planning resources). Recently, the support vector machine emerged as a natural solution for TSF due to its nonlinear learning capabilities. This paper presents two novel Evolutionary Support Vector Machine (ESVM) methods for multi-step TSF. Both methods are based on an Estimation Distribution Algorithm (EDA) search engine that automatically performs a simultaneous variable (number of inputs) and model (hyperparameters) selection. The Global ESVM (GESVM) uses all past patterns to fit the support vector machine, while the Decomposition ESVM (DESVM) separates the series into trended and stationary effects, using a distinct ESVM to forecast each effect and then summing both predictions into a sin- gle response. Several experiments were held, using six time series. The proposed approaches were analyzed under two criteria and compared against a recent Evolu- tionary Artificial Neural Network (EANN) and two classical forecasting methods, Holt-Winters and ARIMA. Overall, the DESVM and GESVM obtained competitive and high quality results. Furthermore, both ESVM approaches consume much less computational effort when compared with EANN.The authors wish to thank Ramon Sagarna for introducing the subject of EDA. The work of P.
