    Non-collinear coupling between magnetic adatoms in carbon nanotubes

    The long range character of the exchange coupling between localized magnetic moments indirectly mediated by the conduction electrons of metallic hosts often plays a significant role in determining the magnetic order of low-dimensional structures. In addition to this indirect coupling, here we show that the direct exchange interaction that arises when the moments are not too far apart may induce a non-collinear magnetic order that cannot be characterized by a Heisenberg-like interaction between the magnetic moments. We argue that this effect can be manipulated to control the magnetization alignment of magnetic dimers adsorbed to the walls of carbon nanotubes.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR

    NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF A VERTICAL HELICAL EARTH-AIR HEAT EXCHANGER

    The Earth-Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) is an equipment that consists of ducts buried in the ground in which the air is forced to pass through. The heat exchange with the surrounding soil turns the air temperature in the outlet section of the EAHE milder. Due to that, the EAHE is capable of assist air conditioning systems and reduce energy consumption, by taking advantage of the temperature gradient established between the soil surface and its layers. In the current study, the operation of Vertical Helical EAHEs was numerically evaluated with different distances between helicoid curves, for the city of Viamão, located in the southern Brazil. The results stated that the Vertical Helical EAHE with dimensions between the curves equivalent to 100 and 200 mm presented the better thermal performances for cooling mode operation in the hottest seasons of the years, when compared to the Conventional Horizontal EAHE adopted as reference. Frim this comparison, the obtained average values of the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) were, respectively, 0.47 °C and 0.66 °C. At last, it must be highlighted a sevenfold reduction in the soil volume occupied by the installation of the Helical EAHE compared to the Conventional Horizontal EAHE

    Development of a framework for metabolic pathway analysis-driven strain optimization methods

    Genome-scale metabolic models (GSMMs) have become important assets for rational design of compound overproduction using microbial cell factories. Most computational strain optimization methods (CSOM) using GSMMs, while useful in metabolic engineering, rely on the definition of questionable cell objectives, leading to some bias. Metabolic pathway analysis approaches do not require an objective function. Though their use brings immediate advantages, it has mostly been restricted to small scale models due to computational demands. Additionally, their complex parameterization and lack of intuitive tools pose an important challenge towards making these widely available to the community. Recently, MCSEnumerator has extended the scale of these methods, namely regarding enumeration of minimal cut sets, now able to handle GSMMs. This work proposes a tool implementing this method as a Java library and a plugin within the OptFlux metabolic engineering platform providing a friendly user interface. A standard enumeration problem and pipeline applicable to GSMMs is proposed, making use by the community simpler. To highlight the potential of these approaches, we devised a case study for overproduction of succinate, providing a phenotype analysis of a selected strategy and comparing robustness with a selected solution from a bi-level CSOM.The authors thank the project “DeYeastLibrary—Designer yeast strain library optimized for metabolic engineering applications”, Ref.     Anti-de Sitter curvature radius constrained by quasars in brane-world scenarios

    This paper is intended to investigate the luminosity due to accretion of gas in supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the center of quasars, using a brane-world scenario naturally endowed with extra dimensions, whereon theories formulated introduce corrections in the field equations at high energies. SMBHs possess the necessary highly energetic environment for the introduction of these corrections, which are shown to produce small deviations in all SMBH properties and, consequentely, corrections in the accretion theory that supports quasars radiative processes. The radiative flux observed from quasars indicates these deviations, from which the magnitude of the AdS5_5 bulk curvature radius, and consequently the extra dimension compactification radius is estimated.Comment: 11 pages, RevTeX, Eq.(2) and (3) expanded, and comments thereon update

    Doing calories: the practices of dieting using calorie counting app MyFitnessPal

    The existing literature on fatness has critically discussed meanings and morals associated with body weight and explored people’s experiences of weight loss attempts. However, little attention has been paid to the practices of dieting – how it is ‘done’. Based on an interview study involving 31 participants, who shared their self-tracking experience of using the MyFitnessPal calorie counting app, we focus on the practices of ‘doing’ calories. First, we discuss the practices of temporality of logging food, showing that the use of MyFitnessPal not only has to be fitted into daily routines but can also transform them. Then, we look at the practices of precision or users’ various ways of turning the ‘messiness’ of food into precise numbers. Lastly, we explore users’ practices of adjustments – their attitudes to adherence to their daily calorie goal and ways of dealing with going above it. Based on our findings we suggest calorie counting is not a straightforward data collection, but one that involves constant practical strategies and negotiations, and can both influence and be influenced by other everyday practices

    Variable velocity system for evaluating effects of air velocity on Japanese quail

    This study documents the design and performance of a system to apply different magnitudes of air velocity to Japanese quail, to evaluate the combined effects of velocity, temperature and humidity on bird behaviour, performance and welfare. The system was developed to simulate observed field conditions ocurring in regions with high winds where quail are raised in curtain-sided housing. System performance consisted of characterizing air velocity distribution in cages downstream of the air velocity which was directed at the front of the cages. The system consisted of two fans attached to a 25 cm PVC tube, one at each end, with the outlet airflow directed through a continuous slot over the cage front at the feeder. The design and performance of this experimental system was evaluated, with six such systems were built and utilized in research trials. To assess system performance, air velocity was measured at 275 points per cage uniformly arranged along the three dimensions (length, width and height) in eight cages with zero, 1, 2 or 3 m s-1 nominal velocity setpoints. Spatial distribution of velocity was analysed by mapping and from descriptive statistics, with attention to the zone closest to the feeder where birds must go to eat. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) found in mean paired difference of air speed data measured for pairs of front portion cages with similar velocities. A significant positive correlation was found (P < 0.001) between the measured air velocity at paired points in the cages subjected to the same velocity treatment. A comparison of measured mean air velocity to the nominal setpoint values used for experiments indicated that careful attention to outlet adjustment is important, especially at higher nominal velocity setpoint as 3 (± 0.10) m s-1 which was difficult to achieve with the system.
