In-situ thermally-reduced graphene oxide/epoxy composites: thermal and mechanical properties

    Get PDF
Graphene has excellent mechanical, thermal, optical and electrical properties and this has made it a prime target for use as a filler material in the development of multifunctional polymeric composites. However, several challenges need to be overcome in order to take full advantage of the aforementioned properties of graphene. These include achieving good dispersion and interfacial properties between the graphene filler and the polymeric matrix. In the present work we report the thermal and mechanical properties of reduced graphene oxide/epoxy composites prepared via a facile, scalable and commercially-viable method. Electron micrographs of the composites demonstrate that the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is well-dispersed throughout the composite. Although no improvements in glass transition temperature, tensile strength, and thermal stability in air of the composites were observed, good improvements in thermal conductivity (about 36%), tensile and storage moduli (more than 13%) were recorded with the addition of 2 wt% of rGO

Aims: The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is a dual system with two opposite arms: i) the classical one formed by the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), angiotensin (Ang) II and angiotensin type 1 (AT1) receptors; ii) the counter-regulatory arm consisting of ACE2, Ang-(1?7) and Mas receptor. Physical exercise can modulate this system, however, only animal studies have compared the effects of different intensity protocols on the RAS. No data with humans were provided. Therefore, we investigated the acute effect of two protocols of isowork aerobic exercise [High-Intensity Interval Exercise (HIIE) and Moderate-Intensity Continuous Exercise (MICE)] in plasma and urinary levels of RAS components in physically active men. Main methods: The HIIE protocol included a 5-minute warm-up cycling at 60?70% of heart rate peak (HRp) intensity followed by 10 sets of 30 s above 90% with 1 min of recovery and 3 min of cool down. The MICE protocol was performed at a constant power corresponding to 60?70% of HRp and finalized at the same total work of HIIE. Blood and urine samples were collected before and after the protocols. Plasma and urinary levels of ACE, ACE2, Ang-(1?7) and Ang II were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunoassay. Key findings: While the HIIE protocol significantly increased urinary levels of ACE and plasma levels of ACE2, the MICE protocol elevated urinary concentrations of ACE2 and of Ang-(1?7). A greater increase of urine concentrations of Ang-(1?7) occurred in the MICE if compared with the HIIE protocol. Significance: Aerobic physical exercise acutely increases the activity of the counter-regulatory RAS axis, mostly the MICE protocol

ABSTRACTThe nitrate efficiency in the performance of the masters category in swimmers in Sao PauloIntroduction: It has been shown that nitrate supplementation is beneficial during high-intensity exercise, like in swimming, since it causes an increase in potency, in time of exhaustion and improved performance in exercises against the clock. Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the nitrate efficiency in the performance of the masters category swimmers in Sao Paulo. Methods: The sample was composed of 11 athletes, of both genders, aged 20 to 55 years. The athletes were subject to two extensive testing, on the first day ingesting 500 ml of water and the other day ingesting 500 ml of beetroot juice, both before training. It was evaluated the level of dehydration and the subjective perception of effort (the Borg Scale). Results: In relation to the Borg Scale, the test ingesting water, 36.3% of the athletes rated the training as extremely intense, while test ingesting beetroot juice, 45.4% classified as intense. In training with water, the average weight loss percentage was 0.97% and the sweating rate was 16.9 ml / min. Already with beetroot juice, the weight loss was slightly lower, 0.93%, and the sweating rate was 15.6 ml / min. Conclusion: The consumption of beet juice can be presented as a positive alternative in the slight improvement of perceived exertion in swimming athletes

Effects of terlipressin as early treatment for protection of brain in a model of haemorrhagic shock

    Get PDF
Introduction: We investigated whether treatment with terlipressin during recovery from hypotension due to haemorrhagic shock (HS) is effective in restoring cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and brain tissue markers of water balance, oxidative stress and apoptosis. Methods: In this randomised controlled study, animals undergoing HS (target mean arterial pressure (MAP) 40 mmHg for 30 minutes) were randomised to receive lactated Ringer’s solution (LR group; n =14; volume equal to three times the volume bled), terlipressin (TERLI group; n =14; 2-mg bolus), no treatment (HAEMO group; n =12) or sham (n =6). CPP, systemic haemodynamics (thermodilution technique) and blood gas analyses were registered at baseline, shock and 5, 30, 60 (T60), 90 and 120 minutes after treatment (T120). After the animals were killed, brain tissue samples were obtained to measure markers of water balance (aquaporin-4 (AQP4)), Na+-K+-2Cl− co-transporter (NKCC1)), oxidative stress (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD)) and apoptotic damage (Bcl-x and Bax). Results: Despite the HS-induced decrease in cardiac output (CO) and hyperlactataemia, resuscitation with terlipressin recovered MAP and resulted in restoration of CPP and in cerebral protection expressed by normalisation of AQP4, NKCC1, TBARS and MnSOD expression and Bcl-x/Bax ratio at T60 and T120 compared with sham animals. In the LR group, CO and blood lactate levels were recovered, but the CPP and MAP were significantly decreased and TBARS levels and AQP4, NKCC1 and MnSOD expression and Bcl-x/Bax ratio were significantly increased at T60 and T120 compared with the sham group. Conclusions: During recovery from HS-induced hypotension, terlipressin was effective in normalising CPP and cerebral markers of water balance, oxidative damage and apoptosis. The role of this pressor agent on brain perfusion in HS requires further investigation

Synovial chondromatosis and soft tissue chondroma: extraosseous cartilaginous tumor defined by FN1 gene rearrangement

    Get PDF
A fusion between fibronectin 1 (FN1) and activin receptor 2A (ACVR2A) has been reported previously in isolated cases of the synovial chondromatosis. To analyze further and validate the findings, we performed FISH and demonstrated recurrent FN1-ACVR2A rearrangements in synovial chondromatosis (57%), and chondrosarcoma secondary to synovial chondromatosis (75%), showing that FN1 and/or AVCR2A gene rearrangements do not distinguish between benign and malignant synovial chondromatosis. RNA sequencing revealed the presence of the FN1-ACVR2A fusion in several cases that were negative by FISH suggesting that the true prevalence of this fusion is potentially higher than 57%. In soft tissue chondromas, FN1 alterations were detected by FISH in 50% of cases but no ACVR2A alterations were identified. RNA sequencing identified a fusion involving FN1 and fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) in the case of soft tissue chondroma and FISH confirmed recurrent involvement of both FGFR1 and FGFR2. These fusions were present in a subset of soft tissue chondromas characterized by grungy calcification, a feature reminiscent of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor. However, unlike the latter, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) mRNA expression was not elevated in soft tissue chondromas harboring the FN1-FGFR1 fusion. The mutual exclusivity of ACVR2A rearrangements observed in synovial chondromatosis and FGFR1/2 in soft tissue chondromas suggests these represent separate entities. There have been no reports of malignant soft tissue chondromas, therefore differentiating these lesions will potentially alter clinical management by allowing soft tissue chondromas to be managed more conservatively

The growing demand in the field of inclusive education that has become a subject in Higher Education has contributed to the rethinking of this stage of education. It is necessary for higher education institutions to step up the barriers that hinder the full exercise of the right of citizens who are now studying it. In this research, we investigate how the managers of theFederal University of Ouro Preto (Ufop) understand three fundamental concepts for the implementation of inclusive policies: inclusion, interculturality and pedagogical innovation. Data collection was performed through the application of 120 questionnaires with 38 respondents. From the answers it was possible to observe that the managers had a greater knowledge on the theme of inclusion, unlike the other two concepts. We can consider that the answers reveal the need to build a field of studies and debates about the concepts investigated. This can contribute to promote training in universities and to ensure that inclusive education is central to Ufop?s actions

AbstractBackground: Peripheral neuropathy is known to be related to inflammatory bowel disease and it is one of the most frequently reported neurologic complications. Various studies have found peripheral nervous system complications, rather than central nervous system involvement, to be predominant. In the literature, there are a few cases of inflammatory polyneuropathy developed in the course of ulcerative colitis : 5 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, one case of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, 10 cases of neuropathy and one case of perineuritis. Case presentation: We describe a case of chronic inflammatory polyneuropathy associated with ulcerative colitis. Conclusion: Peripheral neuropathy is not a common manifestation of IBD, highlighting the need for careful exclusion of other causes of neuropathy when both conditions are encountered in clinical practice.

Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG)The physical properties and fertility of the soil are important factors in the formation and establishment of pasture. Changes in physical properties affect the movement of water, air, nutrients and roots, which, in turn, affect the productivity and longevity of pastures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of the soil and the dry matter yield of a pasture with signalgrass cv. Basilisk (Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk), fertilized with increasing nitrogen doses (N), on a dystrophic Red-Yellow Latosol. The experiment was conducted on the Fazenda Rio Manso of the Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, in Couto de Magalh?es de Minas, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. To evaluate the annual forage yield, a split plot scheme in a randomized block design with four replications was used, with N doses (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg/ha/year) in the plots and growing seasons (first and second) in the subplots. For soil evaluation, a split plot scheme was used with N doses (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha/cut) in the plots and three sampling times (prior to the experiment, at the end of the first growing season and at the end of the second growing season) in the subplots in a randomized block design with four replications. This analysis was performed separately at two soil depths (0-3 and 10-13 cm). Forage samples were analyzed for the annual dry matter yield (DMY), and soil samples were analyzed for pre-consolidation pressure (?p), initial soil bulk density (Bd), total pore volume (TPV) and void index (Vd). Higher nitrogen doses increased the dry matter yield of signalgrass pasture and the pre-consolidation pressure of the soil. The total pore volume and void index decreased, and the initial soil bulk density increased, though without promoting soil compaction
