    NdYAG laser treatment of a glomus tympanicum tumour

    Glomus tympanicum tumours are highly vascular tumours of the middle ear. Their removal by conventional surgical methods requires an extensive procedure in many cases, often with ossicular disarticulation to allow adequate exposure prior to the 'chaotic' and haemorrhagic event of tumour removal. This paper reports on the use of an NdYAG laser in a case of a large glomus tympanicum tumour. The laser facilitated a transcanal approach, avoided ossicular disarticulation and allowed accurate and almost bloodless ablation of the entire tumour.The NdYAG laser appears to be a very useful treatment modality in the management of these highly vascular tumours. Care should be taken to avoid accidental energy transmission to the cochlea

    Germination rates of old and fresh seeds and their implications on invasiveness of the ornamental Canary Islands date palm (Phoenix canariensis)

    In many countries, Canary Islands Date Palms (Phoenix canariensis) have escaped their horticulturally managed settings and have commenced to colonise surrounding natural bushland. While dispersed by various vectors, both birds and canids such as foxes, fluctuating environmental conditions may inhibit germination in the season of deposition. The potential of old, previous season’s seeds to germinate when conditions turn favourable has direct implications on the plant’s ability to establish viable, colonising populations. Nothing is known about the ability of older, previous season’s seeds to successfully germinate. Based in experimental data, this paper shows that that the seeds of Phoenix canariensis exhibit both substantial inter-specimen and inter-seasonal variations in their germination potential. The observed variability is caused by the high genetic diversity inherent in a given palm population, as well as by range of environmental factors. At the present stage it is impossible to separate these two. Directions for further research are outlined

    A Generalised Fractional Differencing Bootstrap for Long Memory Processes

    A bootstrap methodology, first proposed in a restricted form by Kapetanios and Papailias (2011), suitable for use with stationary and nonstationary fractionally integrated time series is further developed in this paper. The resampling algorithm involves estimating the degree of fractional integration, applying the fractional differencing operator, resampling the resulting approximation to the underlying short memory series and, finally, cumulating to obtain a resample of the original fractionally integrated process. While a similar approach based on differencing has been independently proposed in the literature for stationary fractionally integrated processes using the sieve bootstrap by Poskitt, Grose and Martin (2015), we extend it to allow for general bootstrap schemes including blockwise bootstraps. Further, we show that it can also be validly used for nonstationary fractionally integrated processes. We establish asymptotic validity results for the general method and provide simulation evidence which highlights a number of favourable aspects of its finite sample performance, relative to other commonly used bootstrap methods

    Complementarity of Spike- and Rate-Based Dynamics of Neural Systems

    Relationships between spiking-neuron and rate-based approaches to the dynamics of neural assemblies are explored by analyzing a model system that can be treated by both methods, with the rate-based method further averaged over multiple neurons to give a neural-field approach. The system consists of a chain of neurons, each with simple spiking dynamics that has a known rate-based equivalent. The neurons are linked by propagating activity that is described in terms of a spatial interaction strength with temporal delays that reflect distances between neurons; feedback via a separate delay loop is also included because such loops also exist in real brains. These interactions are described using a spatiotemporal coupling function that can carry either spikes or rates to provide coupling between neurons. Numerical simulation of corresponding spike- and rate-based methods with these compatible couplings then allows direct comparison between the dynamics arising from these approaches. The rate-based dynamics can reproduce two different forms of oscillation that are present in the spike-based model: spiking rates of individual neurons and network-induced modulations of spiking rate that occur if network interactions are sufficiently strong. Depending on conditions either mode of oscillation can dominate the spike-based dynamics and in some situations, particularly when the ratio of the frequencies of these two modes is integer or half-integer, the two can both be present and interact with each other

    TEMPRANILLO is a regulator of juvenility in plants

    Many plants are incapable of flowering in inductive daylengths during the early juvenile vegetative phase (JVP). Arabidopsis mutants with reduced expression of TEMPRANILLO (TEM), a repressor of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) had a shorter JVP than wild-type plants. Reciprocal changes in mRNA expression of TEM and FT were observed in both Arabidopsis and antirrhinum, which correlated with the length of the JVP. FT expression was induced just prior to the end of the JVP and levels of TEM1 mRNA declined rapidly at the time when FT mRNA levels were shown to increase. TEM orthologs were isolated from antirrhinum (AmTEM) and olive (OeTEM) and were expressed most highly during their juvenile phase. AmTEM functionally complemented AtTEM1 in the tem1 mutant and over-expression of AmTEM prolonged the JVP through repression of FT and CONSTANS (CO). We propose that TEM may have a general role in regulating JVP in herbaceous and woody species
