    Digital Shoeboxes: the history and future of personal performance archiving

    Personal performance archiving describes a practice in which individuals who regularly attend live performances document their experiences, usually through the collection of documents such as programmes, playbills, cast sheets, ticket stubs, posters and leaflets. This is a form of documenting performance which intersects with the related field of serious leisure. Personal performance archiving relies on the collection and storage of physical documents, yet in this age of rapidly advancing digital technologies and social media, born-digital documents are beginning to take precedence in event management. This will undoubtedly affect these kinds of hobbyist archivists. This project strives to understand three main topics; what information can be taken from archived performance documents, how audience members are currently documenting and archiving their experience, and how the increase of digitisation and born-digital documents will affect this practice. This project used a survey to determine the current collecting and archiving preferences of modern theatregoers, several collections of physical and digitised programmes to compare style and content over different eras, and contains a literature review concerning current and future digital modes of performance documentation

    Conversations with former students with intellectual disability and their families about their experiences in high school

    Collaboration among parents, educators, and students expands the knowledge base and promotes mutual respect among decision-makers involved in planning students education. The relationship can help students achieve their goals. This study sought to examine the experiences among students with intellectual disability and their families in high school. I chose to use qualitative methods of portraiture and interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Students, like those in this study, with low incidence disabilities are often disenfranchised because of their low proportion of the general population of high school students. The results of this study, reported in portraits, gave voice to members of this disenfranchised group. I interviewed three former students, their mothers, and one adult sister. I recorded, transcribed, and analyzed the interviews. I reported the results as portraits to capture the voices and document the lived experiences of this marginalized group. There were a few notable common threads among the participants. The former students were all assigned to small group, special education classes and included only in a few general education electives. Despite negative experiences, each former student said that he liked school. The former students\u27 mothers reported that the quality of vii education that their sons received was dependent on the quality of individual teachers. The mothers expressed that the IEP meetings were not helpful to them or their sons, but were carried out to serve the needs of the system. A third commonality among the mothers was that they did not receive appropriate transition services from the school district. Generalization of the study is limited by the small sample size and the unique nature of each portrait. However, a clear picture emerges of the experiences of these individuals during their high school years

    Ray Mallock Ltd is a medium sized business operating in one of the fastest developing, expensive, international industries, motor sport. A tremendous amount is spent every year on research and developing cars to go faster because the company’s reputation stands upon their cars winning. Motor sport is primarily located in the south of England with many small specialist suppliers developing around the various teams. The suppliers to the motor sport industry are often under considerable pressure to respond instantaneously to the needs of each team. With such a wide range of skills and types of suppliers the supply chain becomes very complex and awkward for a company the size of RML to manage as it requires a lot of resources. Therefore the overall project aim was to look at the approach RML took toward their supply chain and resolve the major problems that were encountered by the Materials Department. The Materials Department consists of Purchasing, Inspection and Stores. These departments are closely linked and incorporate quality. A number of quality tools were used to gather data and information regarding the department including interviews, , ) internal literature review, observation, flow process mapping, gap analysis and data [ collection. This highlighted a common problem to medium sized companies, informality. i Procedures were not in place so improvements were limited, a wealth of experience lay with employees regarding suppliers but this needed to be gathered and methods for ; \ selecting, appraising and measuring performance formulated. Communication externally needed improvement, with the high variability and randomness of orders placed with suppliers they needed to be made more aware of how projects are progressing to help them plan. There is extra emphasis placed upon critical components for car builds which is the reason why a supplier development scheme was adapted for use by RML. The project concludes that proper procedures, supplier appraisal and selection schemes, performance measurement and future supplier development, if used properly and wholeheartedly the tools ought to aid the department. The Materials Department can improve after the initial implementation by developing the tools and make real steps towards making better informed decisions about suppliers, managing supplier relationships, continuous improvements and contributing to the bottom line of RML.MRe

    Native speakers as documenters: a student initiative at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa

    The Language Documentation Training Center (LDTC), a student-run initiative in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Hawai'i at Miinoa, is an innovative program which brings native speakers into the field of documentary linguistics and elevates their roles to central participants in the documentary process. At LDTC, graduate students in linguistics partner up with native speakers of underdocumented languages during a series of workshops where native speakers learn best practices in documentary linguistics. While the linguistic training is pared down to the skills and knowledge relevant to the native speakers' languages, the documentary training empowers the speakers to undertake further documentation efforts in their own communities.     Efficacy of chronic disease self-management among low-income Black males with behavioral health disorders: Pilot study

    Background: This study examined the effectiveness of Stanford University’s Chronic Disease Self-management Program (CDSMP) among men living with co-morbidities of chronic physical health disease and behavioral health disorders. Methods: The study was conducted at a community-based, non-profit organization in partnership with a large suburban university. Two pilot studies were completed with the population of interest. Low-income adult males with behavioral health disorders were recruited to participate in the program provided by a local behavioral health agency. Facilitators trained in the CDSMP program administered it at the agency site, and participants attended weekly meetings. Descriptive data collected included health history, demographic information, and assessments of knowledge with the Chronic Disease Self-Efficacy Scale and the Chronic Disease Self-Management Questionnaire created by the Stanford Patient Education Research Center. Due to the small sample size, n=12, the Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to evaluate before and after differences in the sample. Results: For the participants, there were increases in overall activity, stretching activities, and equipment activities. Additionally, participants experienced a decrease in the number of days affected by poor physical or mental health. However, there was no significant increase in perceived self-efficacy, a factor in patient confidence and possibly compliance. Limitations included the small sample size, lack of a control group, and convenience sampling. Conclusions: Various aspects of the program were helpful to some participants, but cultural factors made other areas less compatible for this population. A larger study, utilizing a comparison group, could generate data relevant to hypotheses based on these observations. By collecting qualitative data, focus groups could contribute to understanding the experiences and needs of the participants. Development of a curriculum for self-management of chronic disease with a focus on intercultural competence is presently of interest
