    In a technology-driven age, the Internet has changed how prospective homebuyers search for their new home. For many, a search on Google is the first step before hiring a broker or getting prequalified for a mortgage. Although the Internet is a powerful tool widely utilized by many, there has been a growing concern for managing and protecting the integrity of real estate listings. Data scraping of listing data has become problematic for the real estate industry; as a result, this has caused irreparable harm to everyone. This comment highlights the benefits of awarding copyright protection to all contents of the original broker’s listing

    Resistance to Ionizing Radiation and Oxidative Stress in Halobacterium salinarum NRC-1

    Oxidative stress results from environmental challenges that cause unchecked production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We analyzed the cellular damage and stress response of the extremophile Halobacterium salinarum NRC-1 exposed to chemical oxidants and to ionizing radiation (IR). In contrast to IR, cellular damage from H2O2 and superoxide suggested that cell death resulted from interference with major metabolic pathways rather than generalized oxidative lesions. We found that essential ROS scavenging enzymes were not necessary for H. salinarum NRC-1 survival to IR. Protection assays using enzyme-free cellular extracts from H. salinarum NRC-1 demonstrated high level of protection for protein activity but not for DNA integrity against IR. Biochemical analysis of the extracts underlined an essential role in ROS scavenging for specific nucleosides and MnPO4 complexes. These studies contributed novel findings on the critical role played by non-enzymatic systems in IR resistance in H. salinarum NRC-1

    Towards An Understanding of Talent Identification in Elite Sport

    The purpose of this thesis was to examine the efficacy of talent identification (TID) programs in predicting future success in elite-level sport. A systematic literature review was performed in phase 1 to synthesize the existing studies. Findings from this review highlighted a high degree of homogeneity in the samples and inconclusive outcomes for the variables examined. The objective of phase 2 was to discern whether testing variables employed by Golf Canada (GC) were effective in discriminating skilled from less-skill athletes. Findings revealed that their TID model does not hold discriminative or predictive utility. This thesis contributes to a limited literature base and provides direction for future research to enhance the selection process for elite-level athletes

    Constructing and validating a scale of inquisitive curiosity

    We advance the understanding of the philosophy and psychology of curiosity by operationalizing and constructing an empirical measure of Nietzsche’s conception of inquisitive curiosity, expressed by the German term Wissbegier, (“thirst for knowledge” or “need/impetus to know”) and Neugier (“curiosity” or “inquisitiveness”). First, we show that existing empirical measures of curiosity do not tap the construct of inquisitive curiosity, though they may tap related constructs such as idle curiosity and phenomenological curiosity. Next, we map the concept of inquisitive curiosity and connect it to related concepts, such as open-mindedness and intellectual humility. The bulk of the paper reports four studies: an Anglophone exploratory factor analysis, an Anglophone confirmatory factor analysis, an informant study, and a Germanophone exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis

    The genetic architecture underlying the evolution of a rare piscivorous life history form in brown trout after secondary contact and strong introgression

    Identifying the genetic basis underlying phenotypic divergence and reproductive isolation is a longstanding problem in evolutionary biology. Genetic signals of adaptation and reproductive isolation are often confounded by a wide range of factors, such as variation in demographic history or genomic features. Brown trout ( ) in the Loch Maree catchment, Scotland, exhibit reproductively isolated divergent life history morphs, including a rare piscivorous (ferox) life history form displaying larger body size, greater longevity and delayed maturation compared to sympatric benthivorous brown trout. Using a dataset of 16,066 SNPs, we analyzed the evolutionary history and genetic architecture underlying this divergence. We found that ferox trout and benthivorous brown trout most likely evolved after recent secondary contact of two distinct glacial lineages, and identified 33 genomic outlier windows across the genome, of which several have most likely formed through selection. We further identified twelve candidate genes and biological pathways related to growth, development and immune response potentially underpinning the observed phenotypic differences. The identification of clear genomic signals divergent between life history phenotypes and potentially linked to reproductive isolation, through size assortative mating, as well as the identification of the underlying demographic history, highlights the power of genomic studies of young species pairs for understanding the factors shaping genetic differentiation

    Development and validation of a multi-dimensional measure of intellectual humility

    This paper presents five studies on the development and validation of a scale of intellectual humility. This scale captures cognitive, affective, behavioral, and motivational components of the construct that have been identified by various philosophers in their conceptual analyses of intellectual humility. We find that intellectual humility has four core dimensions: Open-mindedness (versus Arrogance), Intellectual Modesty (versus Vanity), Corrigibility (versus Fragility), and Engagement (versus Boredom). These dimensions display adequate self-informant agreement, and adequate convergent, divergent, and discriminant validity. In particular, Open-mindedness adds predictive power beyond the Big Six for an objective behavioral measure of intellectual humility, and Intellectual Modesty is uniquely related to Narcissism. We find that a similar factor structure emerges in Germanophone participants, giving initial evidence for the model’s cross-cultural generalizability

    Vermont Adolescent Perception of Barriers to Smoking and Cessation

    Introduction: Despite a decline in youth smoking rates over the past decade, thirteen percent of Vermont high school students still smoke (Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey, YRBS, 2013). Smoking and nicotine exposure at an early age can have detrimental effects on brain development and lead to long term, sustained tobacco use (Arrazola et. al 2015). It was our goal to characterize the barriers to cessation for these adolescents. Some important factors suggested by the literature include living with someone who smokes (50% of VT teen smokers report a parent or guardian who smokes) and having a close friend who smokes (70% of VT teen smokers) (American Lung Association 2015). Nationally, while teen smoking rates continue to decline, the decrease is being offset by a significant increase in electronic vapor products (e-cigs) (12% increase from 2011-2014) (Arrazola et. al 2015). The 2013 Vermont YRBS data may therefore be misleading, and not capture this increase in tobacco and e-cig use. Therefore, we were particularly interested in further characterizing the link, if any, between e-cig use and smoking initiation or successful smoking cessation.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1222/thumbnail.jp
