The 2D analogue of the Reissner-Nordstrom solution
A two-dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity model, whose static solutions have the
same features of the Reissner-Nordstrom solutions, is obtained from the
dimensional reduction of a four-dimensional (4D) string effective action
invariant under S-duality transformations. The black hole solutions of the 2D

The re-emission spectrum of digital hardware subjected to EMI
The emission spectrum of digital hardware under the influence of external electromagnetic interference is shown to contain information about the interaction of the incident energy with the digital circuits in the system. The generation mechanism of the re-emission spectrum is reviewed, describing how nonlinear effects may be a precursor to the failure of the equipment under test. Measurements on a simple circuit are used to demonstrate how the characteristics of the re-emission spectrum may be correlated with changes to the digital waveform within the circuit. The technique is also applied to a piece of complex digital hardware where Similar, though more subtle, effects can be measured. It is shown that the re-emission spectrum can be used to detect the interaction of the interference with the digital devices at a level well below that which is able to cause static failures in the circuits. The utility of the technique as a diagnostic tool for immunity testing of digital hardware, by identifying which subsystems are being affected by external interference, is also demonstrated
Crystal truncation rods in kinematical and dynamical x-ray diffraction theories
Crystal truncation rods calculated in the kinematical approximation are shown
to quantitatively agree with the sum of the diffracted waves obtained in the
two-beam dynamical calculations for different reflections along the rod. The
choice and the number of these reflections are specified. The agreement extends
down to at least of the peak intensity. For lower intensities,
the accuracy of dynamical calculations is limited by truncation of the electron
density at a mathematically planar surface, arising from the Fourier series
expansion of the crystal polarizability
Teaching for Life
The Teaching for Life project aimed to explore the needs of teachers in relation to children with life limiting or life threatening conditions. Teachers were well aware of the medical, emotional and social needs of both the child and the other children and adults that surround that child, as well as the importance of the physical atributes of the building and the culture of the school. They wanted more information, guidance and support. Teachers need emotional support for themselves if they are to be able to contain their own anxieties and to be able to support others. In turn they need to be supported by a whole school approach to emotional health and wellbeing, which includes addressing bullying and inclusion. Collaboration between themselves and inter-professional health and social care agencies needs to work more effectively
Multiwavelength Observations of Swift J1753.5-0127
We present contemporaneous X-ray, ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared
observations of the black hole binary system, Swift J1753.5-0127, acquired in
2012 October. The UV observations, obtained with the Cosmic Origins
Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope, are the first UV spectra of this
system. The dereddened UV spectrum is characterized by a smooth, blue continuum
and broad emission lines of CIV and HeII. The system was stable in the UV to
<10% during our observations. We estimated the interstellar reddening by
fitting the 2175 A absorption feature and fit the interstellar absorption
profile of Ly to directly measure the neutral hydrogen column density
along the line of sight. By comparing the UV continuum flux to steady-state
thin accretion disk models, we determined upper limits on the distance to the
system as a function of black hole mass. The continuum is well fit with disk
models dominated by viscous heating rather than irradiation. The broadband
spectral energy distribution shows the system has declined at all wavelengths
since previous broadband observations in 2005 and 2007. If we assume that the
UV emission is dominated by the accretion disk the inner radius of the disk
must be truncated at radii above the ISCO to be consistent with the X-ray flux,
requiring significant mass loss from outflows and/or energy loss via advection
into the black hole to maintain energy balance.Comment: To appear in the Ap

as being linked to gene expression and preventing the
spread of heterochromatin in yeast, or concentrated
at heterochromatin in mammals. To resolve this
apparent dichotomy, affinity-purified antibodies
against the N-terminal region of H2A.Z, in both a triacetylatedandnon-
acetylatedstate, areusedin native
chromatin immmuno-precipitation experiments with
mononucleosomes from three chicken cell types. The
hyperacetylated species concentrates at the 50 end of
active genes, both tissue specific and housekeeping
but is absent from inactive genes, while the
unacetylated form is absent from both active and
inactive genes. A concentration of H2A.Z is also
found at insulators under circumstances implying a
link to barrier activity but not to enhancer blocking.
Although acetylated H2A.Z is widespread throughout
the interphase genome, at mitosis its acetylation is
erased, the unmodified form remaining. Thus,
although H2A.Z may operate as an epigenetic marker
for active genes, its N-terminal acetylation does not

Kaluza-Klein Holography
We construct a holographic map between asymptotically AdS_5 x S^5 solutions
of 10d supergravity and vacuum expectation values of gauge invariant operators
of the dual QFT. The ingredients that enter in the construction are (i) gauge
invariant variables so that the KK reduction is independent of any choice of
gauge fixing; (ii) the non-linear KK reduction map from 10 to 5 dimensions
(constructed perturbatively in the number of fields); (iii) application of
holographic renormalization. A non-trivial role in the last step is played by
extremal couplings. This map allows one to reliably compute vevs of operators
dual to any KK fields. As an application we consider a Coulomb branch solution
and compute the first two non-trivial vevs, involving operators of dimension 2
and 4, and reproduce the field theory result, in agreement with
non-renormalization theorems. This constitutes the first quantitative test of
the gravity/gauge theory duality away from the conformal point involving a vev
of an operator dual to a KK field (which is not one of the gauged supergravity

Spherically symmetric black holes in minimally modified self-dual gravity
We discuss spherically symmetric black holes in the modified self-dual theory
of gravity recently studied by Krasnov, obtained adding a Weyl-curvature
dependent `cosmological term' to the Plebanski lagrangian for general
relativity. This type of modified gravity admits two different types of
singularities: one is a true singularity for the theory where the fundamental
fields of the theory, as well as the (auxiliary) spacetime metric, become
singular, and the other one is a milder "non-metric singularity" where the
metric description of the spacetime breaks down but the fundamental fields
themselves are regular. We first generalise this modified self-dual gravity to
include Maxwell's field and then study basic features of spherically symmetric,
charged black holes, with particular focus on whether these two types of
singularities are hidden or naked. We restrict our attention to minimal forms
of the modification, and find that the theory exhibits `screening' effects of
the electric charge (or `anti-screening', depending upon the sign of the
modification term), in the sense that it leads to the possibility of charging
the black hole more (or less) than it would be possible in general relativity
without exposing a naked singularity. We also find that for any (even
arbitrarily large) value of charge, true singularities of the theory appear to
be either achronal (non-timelike) covered by the hypersurface of a harmless
non-metric singularity, or simply hidden inside at least one Killing horizon.Comment: 42 pages, many colour figures. v2: discussion of the conformal
