    Mental Health Literacy and Substance Use in UK University Students: Exploring the Relationship between Mental Health Literacy, Wellbeing and Substance Use.

    University students are an at-risk population for low wellbeing and increased substance use. Previous findings on the relationship between MHL and wellbeing are conflicting. This exploratory study aimed to investigate the relationship between MHL, wellbeing, and substance use frequency among UK university students. In addition, the study explored how gender affects this relationship, as previous research has suggested women have higher MHL levels than other genders. Participants (n = 103, women = 69, men = 34) were recruited using social media, and a cross-sectional online survey was conducted to collect anonymous quantitative data. The study found that there was a negative correlation between the level of MHL among students and their overall substance use. No significant correlations were found between wellbeing and MHL or overall substance use. Ketamine was the only variable found to correlate with wellbeing. The findings suggest that the lower the participants’ wellbeing, the more likely they are to take ketamine. Women showed significantly higher levels of MHL than men, and a hierarchal regression model revealed that gender was the strongest predictor of MHL. Future research is required to interpret why these results were obtained. These findings suggest that improving students’ MHL is not sufficient for improving their wellbeing, although it may aid in the reduction of students’ substance use

    Effects of harvesting and stubble management on abundance of pest rodents (Mus musculus) in a conservation agriculture system

    BACKGROUND: The shift to more environmentally sensitive agricultural practices over the last several decades has changed farmland landscapes worldwide. Changes including no-till and retaining high biomass mulch has been coincident with an increase in rodent pests in South Africa, India, South America and Europe, indicating a possible conflict between conservation agriculture (CA) and rodent pest management. Research on effects of various crop management practices associated with CA on pest rodent population dynamics is needed to anticipate and develop CA-relevant management strategies. RESULTS: During the Australian 2020–2021 mouse plague, farmers used postharvest stubble management practices, including flattening and/or cutting, to reduce stubble cover in paddocks to lessen habitat suitability for pest house mice. We used this opportunity to assess the effects of both harvest and stubble management on the movement and abundance of mice in paddocks using mouse trapping and radio tracking. We found that most tracked mice remained resident in paddocks throughout harvest, and that mouse population abundance was generally unaffected by stubble management. CONCLUSION: Recent conversions to CA practices have changed how pest house mice use cropped land. Management practices that reduce postharvest habitat complexity do not appear to reduce the attractiveness of paddocks to mice, and further research into new management strategies in addition to toxic bait use is required as part of an integrated pest management approach.</p

    Extended calibration of cold-water coral Ba/Ca using multiple genera and co-located measurements of dissolved barium concentration

    Biological productivity and ocean circulation are both important oceanographic variables that control the distribution of dissolved barium in the ocean interior ([Ba]sw). The ability to accurately reconstruct [Ba]swwill provide key constraints on these processes in the past. The geochemistry of cold-water corals has the potential to unlock paleoceanographic records at spatial and temporal resolutions not available using other sedimentary archives. Previous studies have suggested that the Ba/Ca ratio of coral skeletons is linearly related to [Ba]sw. However, these efforts have used a limited number of species, sparse global seawater databases, or have not explicitly measured the Ba/Ca ratio. Here we investigate the Ba/Ca ratio in a well-constrained set of cold-water scleractinian (aragonitic) corals as a proxy for [Ba]sw, using 58 specimens from 7 coral genera along with co-located measurements of [Ba]sw. We find that traditional chemical cleaning procedures do not significantly affect the Ba/Ca ratio of cold-water coral skeletons, allowing rapid sample throughput. We also determine that intra-sample variation in Ba/Ca ratios can be reduced by using larger sample sizes (e.g. 20 mg). By combining our results with existing data, we find that cold-water coral Ba/Ca is linearly related to [Ba]swaccording to the relationship: Ba/Ca μmol/mol = [0.15 ± 0.02] [Baswnmol/kg] + [2.5 ± 1.4], (R2= 0.7). We observe no species-specific ‘vital effects’ in cold-water coral Ba/Ca ratios, but site-specific effects could be a factor. Nevertheless, our results highlight the potential of Ba/Ca in cold-water corals to reconstruct biological and physical changes in the ocean interior

    Separating two tightly linked species-defining phenotypes in Bactrocera with hybrid recombinant analysis

    Background: Bactrocera tryoni and Bactrocera neohumeralis mate asynchronously; the former mates exclusively around dusk while the latter mates during the day. The two species also differ in the colour of the post-pronotal lobe (callus), which is predominantly yellow in B. tryoni and brown in B. neohumeralis. We have examined the genetic relationship between the two characters in hybrids, backcrosses and multigeneration hybrid progeny. Results: Our analysis of the mating time of the parental species revealed that while B. tryoni mate exclusively at dusk, B. neohumeralis females pair with B. neohumeralis males during the day and with B. tryoni males at dusk. We found considerable variance in mating time and callus colour among hybrid backcross individuals of both sexes but there was a strong although not invariant trend for callus colour to co-segregate with mating time in both sexes. To genetically separate these two phenotypes we allowed the interspecific F1 hybrids to propagate for 25 generations (F25) without selection for mating time or callus colour, finding that the advanced hybrid population had moved towards B. tryoni phenotypes for both traits. Selection for day mating in replicate lines at F25 resulted in significant phenotypic shifts in both traits towards B. neohumeralis phenotypes in F26. However, we were unable to completely recover the mating time profile of B. neohumeralis and relaxation of selection for day mating led to a shift back towards dusk mating, but not yellow callus colour, by F35. Conclusion: We conclude that the inheritance of the two major species-defining traits is separable but tightly linked and involves more than one gene in each case. It also appears that laboratory conditions select for the B. tryoni phenotypes for mating time. We discuss our findings in relation to speciation theory and the likely effects of domestication during the generation of mass release strains for sterile insect control programmes

    Captive reptile mortality rates in the home and implications for the wildlife trade

    The trade in wildlife and keeping of exotic pets is subject to varying levels of national and international regulation and is a topic often attracting controversy. Reptiles are popular exotic pets and comprise a substantial component of the live animal trade. High mortality of traded animals raises welfare concerns, and also has implications for conservation if collection from the wild is required to meet demand. Mortality of reptiles can occur at any stage of the trade chain from collector to consumer. However, there is limited information on mortality rates of reptiles across trade chains, particularly amongst final consumers in the home. We investigated mortality rates of reptiles amongst consumers using a specialised technique for asking sensitive questions, additive Randomised Response Technique (aRRT), as well as direct questioning (DQ). Overall, 3.6% of snakes, chelonians and lizards died within one year of acquisition. Boas and pythons had the lowest reported mortality rates of 1.9% and chameleons had the highest at 28.2%. More than 97% of snakes, 87% of lizards and 69% of chelonians acquired by respondents over five years were reported to be captive bred and results suggest that mortality rates may be lowest for captive bred individuals. Estimates of mortality from aRRT and DQ did not differ significantly which is in line with our findings that respondents did not find questions about reptile mortality to be sensitive. This research suggests that captive reptile mortality in the home is rather low, and identifies those taxa where further effort could be made to reduce mortality rate

    Supplying the wildlife trade as a livelihood strategy in a biodiversity hotspot

    Much of the global wildlife trade is sourced from biodiversity-rich developing countries. These often have high levels of poverty and habitat loss, particularly in rural areas where many depend on natural resources. However, wildlife collection may incentivize local people to conserve habitats that support their livelihoods. Here we examined the contribution of the commercial collection of live animals to rural livelihoods in Madagascar, one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots. Using questionnaires, we investigated the prevalence, profitability relative to other livelihood activities, and local importance of the trade, and its capacity to provide incentives for conservation. Thirteen percent of households were engaged in live animal collection in the study area (~5% trapped reptiles and amphibians and the remainder trapped invertebrates). This formed part of a diverse livelihood strategy, and was more profitable than other activities (in terms of returns per unit of effort), with median earnings of ~US$100 per season (~25% of Gross National Income per year). However, trapping was part-time, usually undertaken by poorer members of the community, and often perceived as opportunistic, risky, and financially unreliable. Further, trappers and nontrappers held similar perceptions regarding conservation, suggesting wildlife trade currently does not incentivize enhanced stewardship of traded species and their habitats. Our study brings together a range of methodologies to present the most comprehensive insights into livelihoods and conservation in poor rural communities involved in the commercial collection of live animals to supply international trade. This improved understanding of the wider socioeconomic dimensions of wildlife trade can inform policy and management interventions for both the threats and opportunities associated with global trade in biodiversity both in Madagascar and more generally

    Risk factors and knowledge associated with high unintended pregnancy rates and low family planning use among pregnant women in Papua New Guinea

    Unintended pregnancy is a major driver of poor maternal and child health in resource-limited settings. Data on pregnancy intention and use of family planning (FP) is scarce in Papua New Guinea (PNG), but are needed to inform public health strategies to improve FP accessibility and uptake. Data from a facility-based cross-sectional sample of 699 pregnant women assessed prevalence and predictors of unintended pregnancy and modern FP use among pregnant women in East New Britain Province, PNG. More than half (55%) the women reported their pregnancy as unintended. Few (18%) reported ever having used a modern FP method, and knowledge of different methods was low. Being single, separated or divorced (AOR 9.66; 95% CI 3.27-28.54), educated to a tertiary or vocational level (AOR 1.78 CI 1.15-2.73), and gravidity>1 (AOR 1.43 for each additional pregnancy CI 1.29-1.59) were associated with unintended pregnancy; being accompanied by a male partner to ANC was associated with a reduced unintended pregnancy (0.46 CI 0.30-0.73). Factors associated with modern FP use included male partner involvement (AOR 2.26 CI 1.39-3.67) and gravidity>1 (AOR 1.54 for each additional pregnancy CI 1.36-1.74). FP use also varied by the facility women attended. Findings highlight an urgent need for targeted interventions to improve FP knowledge, uptake and access, and male partner involvement, to reduce unintended pregnancies and their complications

    Wildlife supply chains in Madagascar from local collection to global export

    International trade in wildlife is a complex multi-billion dollar industry. To supply it, many animals are extracted from the wild, sourced from biodiversity-rich, developing countries. Whilst the trade has far-reaching implications for wildlife protection, there is limited information regarding the socio-economic implications in supply countries. Consequently, a better understanding of the costs and benefits of wildlife supply chains, for both livelihoods and conservation, is required to enhance wildlife trade management and inform its regulation. Using Madagascar as a case study, we used value chain analysis to explore the operation of legal wildlife trade on a national scale; we estimate the number of actors involved, the scale, value and profit distribution along the chain, and explore management options. We find that the supply of wildlife provided economic benefits to a number of actors, from local collectors, to intermediaries, exporters and national authorities. CITES-listed reptiles and amphibians comprised a substantial proportion of the quantity and value of live animal exports with a total minimum export value of 230,795USD per year. Sales prices of reptiles and amphibians increased over 100-fold between local collectors and exporters, with exporters capturing ~92% of final export price (or 57% when their costs are deducted). However, exporters shouldered the largest costs and financial risks. Local collectors obtained ~1.4% of the final sales price, and opportunities for poverty alleviation and incentives for sustainable management from the trade appear to be limited. Promoting collective management of species harvests at the local level may enhance conservation and livelihood benefits. However, this approach requires consideration of property rights and land-tenure systems. The complex and informal nature of some wildlife supply chains make the design and implementation of policy instruments aimed at enhancing conservation and livelihoods challenging.
