    Beyond Screens: Supporting Co-located Augmented Reality Experiences with Smart Home Devices

    We introduce Spooky Spirits, an AR game that makes novel use of everyday smart home devices to support co-located play. Recent exploration of co-located AR experiences consists mainly of digital visual augmentations on mobile or head-mounted screens. In this work, we leverage widely adopted smart lightbulbs to expand AR capabilities beyond the digital and into the physical world, further leveraging the physicality of users' shared environment

    The evidence for Shiatsu:A systematic review of Shiatsu and acupressure

    BACKGROUND: Shiatsu, similar to acupressure, uses finger pressure, manipulations and stretches, along Traditional Chinese Medicine meridians. Shiatsu is popular in Europe, but lacks reviews on its evidence-base. METHODS: Acupressure and Shiatsu clinical trials were identified using the MeSH term 'acupressure' in: EBM reviews; AMED; BNI; CINAHL; EMBASE; MEDLINE; PsycARTICLES; Science Direct; Blackwell Synergy; Ingenta Select; Wiley Interscience; Index to Theses and ZETOC. References of articles were checked. Inclusion criteria were Shiatsu or acupressure administered manually/bodily, published after January 1990. Two reviewers performed independent study selection and evaluation of study design and reporting, using standardised checklists (CONSORT, TREND, CASP and STRICTA). RESULTS: Searches identified 1714 publications. Final inclusions were 9 Shiatsu and 71 acupressure studies. A quarter were graded A (highest quality). Shiatsu studies comprised 1 RCT, three controlled non-randomised, one within-subjects, one observational and 3 uncontrolled studies investigating mental and physical health issues. Evidence was of insufficient quantity and quality. Acupressure studies included 2 meta-analyses, 6 systematic reviews and 39 RCTs. Strongest evidence was for pain (particularly dysmenorrhoea, lower back and labour), post-operative nausea and vomiting. Additionally quality evidence found improvements in sleep in institutionalised elderly. Variable/poor quality evidence existed for renal disease symptoms, dementia, stress, anxiety and respiratory conditions. Appraisal tools may be inappropriate for some study designs. Potential biases included focus on UK/USA databases, limited grey literature, and exclusion of qualitative and pre-1989 studies. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence is improving in quantity, quality and reporting, but more research is needed, particularly for Shiatsu, where evidence is poor. Acupressure may be beneficial for pain, nausea and vomiting and sleep

    FURTHER STUDIES OF _ 5797.1 DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR BAND

    The lambdalambda~5797.1 DIB is unique with its sharp central feature.footnote{T.H. Kerr, R.E. Hibbins, S.J. Fossey, J.R. Miles, P.J. Sarre, ApJ 495, 941 (1998)} We simulated the spectrum based on three premises: (1) Its carrier molecule is polar as concluded from the anomalous spectrum toward the star Herschel 36.footnote{T. Oka, D.E. Welty, S. Johnson, D.G. York, J. Dahlstrom, L.M. Hobbs, ApJ 773, 42 (2013)} (2) The central feature is Q-branch of a parallel band of a prolate top. (3) The radiative temperature of the environment is TrT_r = 2.73 K. A comparison with observed spectrum indicated that the carrier contains 5-7 heavy atoms.footnote{J. Huang, T. Oka, Mol. Phys. J.P. Maier Special Issue in press.} To further strengthen this hypothesis, we have looked for vibronic satellites of the lambdalambda~5797.1 DIB. Since its anomaly toward Her 36 was ascribed to the lengthening of bonds upon the electronic excitation, vibronic satellites involving stretch vibrations are expected. Among the 73 DIBs observed toward HD 183143 to the blue of 5797.1 AA, two DIBs, lambdalambda~5545.1 and lambdalambda~5494.2 stand out as highly correlated with lambdalambda~5797.1 DIB. Their correlation coefficients 0.941 and 0.943, respectively, are not sufficiently high to establish the vibronic relation by themselves but can be explained as due to high uncertainties due to their weakness and their stellar blends. They are above the lambdalambda~5797.1 DIB by 784.0 cm1^{-1} and 951.2 cm1^{-1}, respectively, approximately expected for stretching vibrations. Another observations which may possibly be explained by our hypothesis is the emission at 5800 AA from the Red Rectangle Nebula called RR 5800.footnote{G.D. Schmidt, A.N. Witt, ApJ 383, 698 (1991)} Our analysis suggests that lambdalambda~5797.1 DIB and RR 5800 are consistently explained as caused by the same molecule

    Exploring practice characteristics and research priorities of practitioners of traditional acupuncture in China and the EU-A survey

    AbstractEthnopharmacological relevanceAcupuncture practice is based on the theoretical, historical and philosophical principles, which are part of Chinese medicine. Traditional acupuncture practitioners assess their patients’ conditions using Chinese medicine diagnostic techniques, which determine clinical care and treatment. Little is known about differences in the perceptions of research evidence among practitioners in the European Union (EU) and China, given the diversity of acupuncture practice.Material and methodsThis study explored differences between practitioners of traditional acupuncture regarding perceived need for research evidence and prioritisation for future clinical trials, based on their practice within the EU and China.A convenience sample of acupuncturists in the EU (contacted by their professional organisation) and China (from geographically dispersed hospitals) were invited to participate in a survey, which was conducted during 2010/2011. Data collected included: practitioners’ demographic details, country of training, practice setting, acupuncture techniques, perceived adverse event reporting, diagnostic methods, conditions commonly treated, conditions perceived as needing more evidence and practitioner perceptions of conditions which could demonstrate benefit if investigated in clinical trials.ResultsFrom 1126 survey responses, 1020 (559 EU, 461 China) could be included in the analysis for direct comparison. A response rate for the EU could not be calculated but for China was 98%. Pain was the most frequently reported commonly treated condition by EU acupuncturists and neurological conditions (mainly stroke) for Chinese practitioners. The top reported priorities for research were obstetrics/gynaecological conditions in the EU and neurological problems in China.ConclusionThe survey identified differences in practice and training between acupuncturists in China and the EU and between EU member states. These differences may inform prioritisation of health conditions for future trials. Innovative research methods are recommended to incorporate the complexity and plurality of acupuncture practice and theory. Creation of collaborative networks is crucial in overcoming these differences to facilitate international, multi-centre clinical trials

    Synthesis of biolabile thioalkyl-protected phosphates from an easily accessible phosphotriester precursor

    Robust methods for the synthesis of mixed phosphotriesters are essential to accelerate the development of novel phosphate-containing bioactive molecules. To enable efficient cellular uptake, phosphate groups are commonly masked with biolabile protecting groups, such as S-acyl-2-thioethyl (SATE) esters, that are removed once the molecule is inside the cell. Typically, bis-SATE-protected phosphates are synthesised through phosphoramidite chemistry. This approach, however, suffers from issues with hazardous reagents and can give unreliable yields, especially when applied to the synthesis of sugar-1-phosphate derivatives as tools for metabolic oligosaccharide engineering. Here, we report the development of an alternative approach that gives access to bis-SATE phosphotriesters in two steps from an easy to synthesise tri(2-bromoethyl)phosphotriester precursor. We demonstrate the viability of this strategy using glucose as a model substrate, onto which a bis-SATE-protected phosphate is introduced either at the anomeric position or at C6. We show compability with various protecting groups and further explore the scope and limitations of the methodology on different substrates, including N-acetylhexosamine and amino acid derivatives. The new approach facilitates the synthesis of bis-SATE-protected phosphoprobes and prodrugs and provides a platform that can boost further studies aimed at exploring the unique potential of sugar phosphates as research tools

    DRD2 C957T polymorphism is associated with improved 6-month verbal learning following traumatic brain injury

    Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often leads to heterogeneous clinical outcomes, which may be influenced by genetic variation. A single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) may influence cognitive deficits following TBI. However, part of the association with DRD2 has been attributed to genetic variability within the adjacent ankyrin repeat and kinase domain containing 1 protein (ANKK1). Here, we utilize the Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury Pilot (TRACK-TBI Pilot) study to investigate whether a novel DRD2 C957T polymorphism (rs6277) influences outcome on a cognitive battery at 6 months following TBI-California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT-II), Wechsler Adult Intelligence Test Processing Speed Index Composite Score (WAIS-PSI), and Trail Making Test (TMT). Results in 128 Caucasian subjects show that the rs6277 T-allele associates with better verbal learning and recall on CVLT-II Trials 1-5 (T-allele carrier 52.8 ± 1.3 points, C/C 47.9 ± 1.7 points; mean increase 4.9 points, 95% confidence interval [0.9 to 8.8]; p = 0.018), Short-Delay Free Recall (T-carrier 10.9 ± 0.4 points, C/C 9.7 ± 0.5 points; mean increase 1.2 points [0.1 to 2.5]; p = 0.046), and Long-Delay Free Recall (T-carrier 11.5 ± 0.4 points, C/C 10.2 ± 0.5 points; mean increase 1.3 points [0.1 to 2.5]; p = 0.041) after adjusting for age, education years, Glasgow Coma Scale, presence of acute intracranial pathology on head computed tomography scan, and genotype of the ANKK1 SNP rs1800497 using multivariable regression. No association was found between DRD2 C947T and non-verbal processing speed (WAIS-PSI) or mental flexibility (TMT) at 6 months. Hence, DRD2 C947T (rs6277) may be associated with better performance on select cognitive domains independent of ANKK1 following TBI
