    Organising labour broker workers: the case of Giwusa at AEL and Samwu in Tshwane

Trade unions find it broadly difficult to organise these workers. Giwusa, a general union and Samwu an industrial union have relative success in organising broker workers at a manufacturing plant and municipality respectively. The comparative study of these cases finds that organisational form is not a necessary condition for success and there are similarities between the cases including the workplace organising focus and the common class and cultural experiences of labour broker workers. This experience linked to their material conditions of work, provides a foundation for their willingness to organise. Crucially, the unions’ class politics explains the two different organisational approaches. In the Giwusa case permanent shop stewards drive organisation, supported by the union and based on the market bargaining power of broker workers. In the Samwu case broker workers themselves drive organising from below and challenge both their marginalisation in the union and at the workplace, through the exercise of associational power

    Commission incomplete: exploring the new model for purchasing public services from the third sector

    The concept of commissioning has risen in prominence in recent years as a result of ongoing reforms to the funding and delivery of public services in the UK. The model of commissioning constructed by policy has however been overlaid on existing practices, which themselves differ between different service areas. This paper, focusing on commissioning of third sector organisations (TSOs) in the field of community mental health services, shows that its introduction has not led to the straightforward public sector ‘marketisation’ that advocates desire or that critics fear. Instead, commissioning has led to an indeterminate outcome or 'halfway house' position in which the status and role of commissioning remains somewhat muddled – both internally to participants within public sector organisations and externally in terms of the experience of the interface by TSOs. We found that commissioning as it is actually practiced remains contested and political – it is a highly relational process dependent on personal practices and skills and on personal relationships between stakeholders – and is therefore not fully managerialised or marketised. This has implications for the policy and practice of commissioning and the interpretation of more 'open' public services

    Illness Cognitions and Coping Self-Efficacy in Depression Among Persons With Low Vision.

    PURPOSE: To investigate the mediating role of coping self-efficacy (CSE) between two types of illness cognitions (i.e., acceptance and helplessness) and depressive symptoms in persons with low vision. METHODS: This was a single-group, cross-sectional study. Patients with visual acuity \u3c 6/12 in the better eye and at least minimal depressive symptoms (≥5 on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9]) were recruited from vision rehabilitation services and participated in telephone-administered structured interviews at one time point. Measures were the PHQ-9, CSE Scale, and Illness Cognition Questionnaire. Structural equation modeling (SEM) devised the causal flow of illness cognitions and their observed indirect effects on depressive symptoms via the CSE mediators: problem focused, emotion focused, and social support. RESULTS: The study comprised 163 patients (mean age 62 years; 61% female), most with age-related macular degeneration (26%) and moderate vision impairment (44%, \u3c6/18-6/60). Structural equation modeling indices indicated a perfect fit (χ2 \u3c 0.001, P = 1.00), accounting for 55% of the variance in depressive symptoms. Lower levels of acceptance and higher levels of helplessness illness cognitions were associated with lower self-efficacy in problem-focused coping (β = 0.38, P \u3c 0.001, β = -0.28, P \u3c 0.01, respectively), which in turn was associated with greater depressive symptom severity (β = -0.54, P \u3c 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Lack of acceptance and greater helplessness relating to low vision led to a lack of perceived capability to engage in problem-focused coping, which in turn promoted depressive symptoms. Third-wave cognitive-behavioral treatments that focus on acceptance may be efficacious in this population

    Kidneys for Sale: Who Disapproves, and Why?

    The shortage of transplant kidneys has spurred debate about legalizing monetary payments to donors to increase the number of available kidneys. However, buying and selling organs faces widespread disapproval. We survey a representative sample of Americans to assess disapproval for several forms of kidney market, and to understand why individuals disapprove by identifying factors that predict disapproval, including disapproval of markets for other body parts, dislike of increased scope for markets and distrust of markets generally. Our results suggest that while the public is potentially receptive to compensating kidney donors, among those who oppose it, general disapproval toward certain kinds of transactions is at least as important as concern about specific policy details. Between 51% and 63% of respondents approve of the various potential kidney markets we investigate, and between 42% and 58% want such markets to be legal. A total of 38% of respondents disapprove of at least one market. Respondents who distrust markets generally are not more disapproving of kidney markets; however we find significant correlations between kidney market disapproval and attitudes reflecting disapproval toward certain transactions—including both other body markets and market encroachment into traditionally nonmarket exchanges, such as food preparation.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78709/1/j.1600-6143.2010.03019.x.pd

    Structure and belonging: Pathways to success for underrepresented minority and women PhD students in STEM fields

    The advancement of underrepresented minority and women PhD students to elite postdoctoral and faculty positions in the STEM fields continues to lag that of majority males, despite decades of efforts to mitigate bias and increase opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds. In 2015, the National Science Foundation Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (NSF AGEP) California Alliance (Berkeley, Caltech, Stanford, UCLA) conducted a wide-ranging survey of graduate students across the mathematical, physical, engineering, and computer sciences in order to identify levers to improve the success of PhD students, and, in time, improve diversity in STEM leadership positions, especially the professoriate. The survey data were interpreted via path analysis, a method that identifies significant relationships, both direct and indirect, among various factors and outcomes of interest. We investigated two important outcomes: publication rates, which largely determine a new PhD student’s competitiveness in the academic marketplace, and subjective well-being. Women and minority students who perceived that they were well-prepared for their graduate courses and accepted by their colleagues (faculty and fellow students), and who experienced well-articulated and structured PhD programs, were most likely to publish at rates comparable to their male majority peers. Women PhD students experienced significantly higher levels of distress than their male peers, both majority and minority, while both women and minority student distress levels were mitigated by clearly-articulated expectations, perceiving that they were well-prepared for graduate level courses, and feeling accepted by their colleagues. It is unclear whether higher levels of distress in women students is related directly to their experiences in their STEM PhD programs. The findings suggest that mitigating factors that negatively affect diversity should not, in principle, require the investment of large resources, but rather requires attention to the local culture and structure of individual STEM PhD programs

    Structural and chemical heterogeneity in ancient glass probed using gas overcondensation, X-ray tomography, and solid-state NMR

    Rare ancient glasses have complex, multi-scale structures requiring more sophisticated and non-destructive pore characterisation techniques than usual. Homotattic patch models for nitrogen adsorption gave better fits to the isotherm data, more accurate void space descriptors, and also greater understanding of the underlying physical factors affecting adsorption, than standard BET. These homotattic patch models revealed the critical role of iron impurities in determining adsorption behaviour. Non-destructive sodium-23 NMR relaxometry validated the homotattic patch model for some natron glasses, and, in turn, was validated using multiple quantum magic-angle spinning (MQMAS) 23Na NMR. X-ray tomography images of the glasses showed the presence of large macroporous bubbles, while FEG-SEM revealed nanopores within the glass matrix. A newly-developed, gas overcondensation technique, suitable for small amounts of low porosity material, assessed the inter-relationship between the disparate levels in this hierarchical porosity. This technique demonstrated that the nanoporosity did not form a ‘corona’ around the bubbles, due to leaching from the glass, as initially supposed from tomography data, but was completely disconnected, and, thus, is probably associated with glass alkalinity. Gas overcondensation is demonstrated as a non-destructive alternative to mercury porosimetry for probing multi-scale porosity in rare artefacts
