A Search for Hydroxylamine (NH_2OH) toward Select Astronomical Sources

    Get PDF
Observations of 14 rotational transitions of hydroxylamine (NH_2OH) using the NRAO 12 m telescope on Kitt Peak are reported toward IRC+10216, Orion KL, Orion S, Sgr B2(N), Sgr B2(OH), W3IRS5, and W51M. Although recent models suggest the presence of NH_2OH in high abundance, these observations resulted in non-detection. Upper limits are calculated to be as much as six orders of magnitude lower than those predicted by models. Possible explanations for the lower-than-expected abundance are explored

An Investigation of Exercise-Induced Hypoalgesia After Isometric and Cardiovascular Exercise

Exercise-induced hypoalgesia is a well-established phenomenon in the literature. The underlying mechanisms responsible for this augmentation of pain perception are not completely understood. The specific mode and intensity of exercise that creates hypoalgesia remains equivocal. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify if any differences existed in the exercise-induced hypoalgesia of isometric gripping exercise (IGE) and treadmill exercise (TE). A repeated measures design was used to determine the differences in pain threshold between acute exposure to IGE and TE. Twelve healthy male volunteers served as our subjects. Subjects were tested on three different days under three different conditions (rest, IGE, TE). The order of the trials was randomized and applied force (AF) was used as the dependent variable. Applied force pain threshold (AFPT) was determined by a handheld dolorimeter used to apply progressive force and pain to the skin and muscles of the wrist flexors before and after exercise. Exercise induced hypoalgesia was found in both exercise conditions by comparing resting PPT values (6.23 ± 2.04) to those measured immediately after IGE (7.24 ± 1.61; p = 0.0058) or TE (8.03 ± 2.03; p = 0.0001). However, TE produced a larger (22.04 %) hypoanalgesic effect in comparison to isometric exercise (14.14 %). Both TE and IGE may have potential as methods of increasing one’s pressure pain threshold. Further investigation into the specific causes of exercise-induced hypoalgesia is warranted

The Economic Impact of the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act in Clark County, Nevada – Preliminary Findings

Objective. The primary purpose of this exploratory study was to quantitatively evaluate the economic impact of the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act (NCIAA) on businesses in Clark County. Methods. The goal of this research was to assess economic indicators over a ten year period utilizing measurable data points, including restaurant and drinking establishment employment rates, taxable sales, openings and closings, as well as slot gaming revenues. This ten year time period consisted of a seven year span prior to the enactment of the NCIAA, and three years post enactment. Researchers conceived this study as a means to independently evaluate and address the potential economic impact of a smoke-free law in a region dependent upon tourism and gaming. Results. Economic indicators did in fact decrease after the NCIAA was enforced but most of the declining trends began prior to the passage of the smoke-free act and are consistent with downward trends in other, non-NCIAA affected segments of our economy. Conclusion. The overall findings of this study are consistent with similar non-tobacco industry supported economic studies showing little or no statistically significant downward economic trends after passage of smoke-free legislation

SlicerAstro: a 3-D interactive visual analytics tool for HI data

    Get PDF
SKA precursors are capable of detecting hundreds of galaxies in HI in a single 12 hours pointing. In deeper surveys one will probe more easily faint HI structures, typically located in the vicinity of galaxies, such as tails, filaments, and extraplanar gas. The importance of interactive visualization has proven to be fundamental for the exploration of such data as it helps users to receive immediate feedback when manipulating the data. We have developed SlicerAstro, a 3-D interactive viewer with new analysis capabilities, based on traditional 2-D input/output hardware. These capabilities enhance the data inspection, allowing faster analysis of complex sources than with traditional tools. SlicerAstro is an open-source extension of 3DSlicer, a multi-platform open source software package for visualization and medical image processing. We demonstrate the capabilities of the current stable binary release of SlicerAstro, which offers the following features: i) handling of FITS files and astronomical coordinate systems; ii) coupled 2-D/3-D visualization; iii) interactive filtering; iv) interactive 3-D masking; v) and interactive 3-D modeling. In addition, SlicerAstro has been designed with a strong, stable and modular C++ core, and its classes are also accessible via Python scripting, allowing great flexibility for user-customized visualization and analysis tasks.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, Accepted by Astronomy and Computing. Singular Ergodic Control for Multidimensional Gaussian-Poisson Processes

    Get PDF
Singular control for multidimensional Gaussian-Poisson processes with a long-run (or ergodic) and a discounted criteria are discussed. The dynamic programming yields the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, which are discussed. Full details on the proofs and further extensions are left for coming works

A Semiconductor Under Insulator Technology in Indium Phosphide

This Letter introduces a Semiconductor-Under-Insulator (SUI) technology in InP for designing strip waveguides that interface InP photonic crystal membrane structures. Strip waveguides in InP-SUI are supported under an atomic layer deposited insulator layer in contrast to strip waveguides in silicon supported on insulator. We show a substantial improvement in optical transmission when using InP-SUI strip waveguides interfaced with localized photonic crystal membrane structures when compared with extended photonic crystal waveguide membranes. Furthermore, SUI makes available various fiber-coupling techniques used in SOI, such as sub-micron coupling, for planar membrane III-V systems

On Some Ergodic Impulse Control Problems with Constraint

    Get PDF
This paper studies the impulse control of a general Markov process under the average (or ergodic) cost when the impulse instants are restricted to be the arrival times of an exogenous process, and this restriction is referred to as a constraint. A detailed setting is described, a characterization of the optimal cost is obtained as a solution of an HJB equation, and an optimal impulse control is identified

On Some Optimal Stopping Problems with Constraint

    Get PDF
We consider the optimal stopping problem of a Markov process {xt : t ≤ 0} when the controller is allowed to stop only at the arrival times of a signal, that is, at a sequence of instants {τn : n ≤ 1} independent of {xt : t ≤ 0}. We solve in detail this problem for general Markov–Feller processes with compact state space when the interarrival times of the signal are independent identically distributed random variables. In addition, we discuss several extensions to other signals and to other cases of state spaces. These results generalize the works of several authors where {xt : t ≤ 0} was a diffusion process and where the signal arrives at the jump times of a Poisson process

No directed fractal percolation in zero area

We show that fractal (or "Mandelbrot") percolation in two dimensions produces a set containing no directed paths, when the set produced has zero area. This improves a similar result by the first author in the case of constant retention probabilities to the case of retention probabilities approaching 1
