    More than a warning: Expanding the role of communication in Eastern Caribbean volcano science

    The infrequent nature of volcanic eruptions means that civil authorities and the public may often be unfamiliar with volcanic hazards and may not be fully prepared to deal with them. Many times volcano scientists are required to help governments and citizens understand the threat posed to their lives and property when volcanoes show signs of an imminent eruption. Effectively communicating the potential impact of these events can demand time and skills that these scientists may or may not have. Further, a lack of trusted scientific information can lead to public misinformation and hamper government responses. Although several risk reduction researchers and observatory scientists have advocated for the inclusion of communication specialists in scientific teams, communication resources at many observatories remain under utilised. Using the experience of The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC), this article explores the contribution of a specialist communication team to the work of a volcano monitoring agency. The Education and Outreach (E&O) team at the UWI-SRC manages all the agency’s external communications. The team also works to raise public awareness of geological hazards in the UWI-SRC’s Eastern Caribbean region of responsibility. Within the Caribbean region, most communication research related to disaster risk up until now has focused on communication during crises. Using semi-structured interviews and document review we investigated the impact of strategic communication in a long-term, multi-hazard monitoring programme. A qualitative analysis highlighted the equal importance of crisis communication during unrest and outreach work during quiescent periods. The UWI-SRC’s communication programme has been effective in: 1) supporting scientists’ public communication 2) sustaining stakeholder engagement 3) building physical and social science capacity and 4) strengthening organisational credibility. This article examines the contribution of specialist communication to advisory volcano science throughout the disaster management cycle in the English-speaking Eastern Caribbean. It argues that significant societal value can be added to the scientific work engaged in by advisory scientists by embracing a multi-level communication strategy

    One of the four pilot projects of the Lung Cancer Initiative sponsored by the Department of Defense measures radon levels in the participants homes. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of Lung Cancer. The case-control study has a targeted accrual of 1800 with a case-control ratio of 1:4. The long-term radon kits remain in the home for 90 days and the participants are asked to mail the test kit to the company for analysis. In order to maximize the test kit return rate, reminder calls to the participants occurred 90 days after the home visit

    Comparing P and S wave heterogeneity in the mantle

    From the reprocessed data set of Engdahl and co-workers we have carefully selected matching P and S data for tomographic imaging. We assess data and model error and conclude that our S model uncertainty is twice that of the P model. We account for this in our comparison of the perturbations in P and S-wavespeed. In accord with previous studies we find that P and S perturbations are positively correlated at all depths. However, in the deep mantle systematic di fferences occur between regions that have undergone subduction in the last 120 million years and those that have not. In particular, below 1500 km depth ∂ ln Vs/∂ ln Vp is signifi cantly larger in mantle regions away from subduction than in mantle beneath convergent margins. This inference is substantiated by wavespeed analyses with random realizations of the slab/non-slab distribution. Through much of the mantle there is no signi ficant correlation between bulk sound and S-wave perturbations, but they appear to be negatively correlated between 1700 and 2100 km depth, which is also where the largest di erences in ∂ ln Vs/∂ ln Vp occur. This finding supports convection models with compositional heterogeneity in the lowermost mantle

    Comparison of mortality hazard ratios associated with health behaviours in Canada and the United States:a population-based linked health survey study

    Background Modern health surveillance and planning requires an understanding of how preventable risk factors impact population health, and how these effects vary between populations. In this study, we compare how smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and physical activity are associated with all-cause mortality in Canada and the United States using comparable individual-level, linked population health survey data and identical model specifications. Methods The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) (2003–2007) and the United States National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) (2000, 2005) linked to individual-level mortality outcomes with follow up to December 31, 2011 were used. Consistent variable definitions were used to estimate country-specific mortality hazard ratios with sex-specific Cox proportional hazard models, including smoking, alcohol, diet and physical activity, sociodemographic indicators and proximal factors including disease history. Results A total of 296,407 respondents and 1,813,884 million person-years of follow-up from the CCHS and 58,232 respondents and 497,909 person-years from the NHIS were included. Absolute mortality risk among those with a ‘healthy profile’ was higher in the United States compared to Canada, especially among women. Adjusted mortality hazard ratios associated with health behaviours were generally of similar magnitude and direction but often stronger in Canada. Conclusion Even when methodological and population differences are minimal, the association of health behaviours and mortality can vary across populations. It is therefore important to be cautious of between-study variation when aggregating relative effect estimates from differing populations, and when using external effect estimates for population health research and policy development

    International population-based health surveys linked to outcome data:A new resource for public health and epidemiology

    Background: National health surveys linked to vital statistics and health care information provide a growing source of individual-level population health data. Pooling linked surveys across jurisdictions would create comprehensive datasets that are larger than most existing cohort studies, and that have a unique international and population perspective. This paper’s objectives are to examine the feasibility of pooling linked population health surveys from three countries, facilitate the examination of health behaviours, and present useful information to assist in the planning of international population health surveillance and research studies. Methods: The design, methodologies and content of the Canadian Community Health Survey (2003 to 2008), the United States National Health Interview Survey (2000, 2005) and the Scottish Health Survey (SHeS) (2003, 2008 to 2010) were examined for comparability and consistency. The feasibility of creating common variables for measuring smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and diet was assessed. Sample size and estimated mortality events were collected. Results: The surveys have comparable purposes, designs, sampling and administration methodologies, target populations, exclusions, and content. Similar health behaviour questions allow for comparable variables to be created across the surveys. However, the SHeS uses a more detailed risk factor evaluation for alcohol consumption and diet data. Therefore, comparisons of alcohol consumption and diet data between the SHeS and the other two surveys should be performed with caution. Pooling these linked surveys would create a dataset with over 350,000 participants, 28,424 deaths and over 2.4 million person-years of follow-up. Conclusions: Pooling linked national population health surveys could improve population health research and surveillance. Innovative methodologies must be used to account for survey dissimilarities, and further discussion is needed on how to best access and analyze data across jurisdictions

    Compromised NLRP3 and AIM2 inflammasome function in autoimmune NZB/W F1 mouse macrophages

    Inflammasomes are protein complexes activated by infection and cellular stress that promote caspase-1 activation and subsequent inflammatory cytokine processing and cell death. It has been anticipated that inflammasome activity contributes to autoimmunity. However, we previously showed that macrophages from autoimmune New Zealand Black (NZB) mice lack NLRP3 inflammasome function, and their AIM2 inflammasome responses are compromised by high expression of the AIM2 antagonist protein p202. Here we found that the point mutation leading to lack of NLRP3 expression occurred early in the NZB strain establishment, as it is shared with the related obese strain NZO, but not with the unrelated New Zealand White (NZW) strain. The first cross progeny of NZB and NZW mice develop more severe lupus nephritis than the NZB strain. We have compared AIM2 and NLRP3 inflammasome function in macrophages from NZB, NZW and NZB/W F1 mice. The NZW parental strain showed strong inflammasome function, whilst the NZB/W F1 have haploinsufficient expression of NLRP3 and show reduced NLRP3 and AIM2 inflammasome responses, particularly at low stimulus strength. It remains to be established whether the low inflammasome function could contribute to loss of tolerance and the onset of autoimmunity in NZB and NZB/W F1. However, with amplifying inflammatory stimuli through the course of disease, the NLRP3 response in the NZB/W F1 may be sufficient to contribute to kidney damage at later stages of disease.
