    Two-dimensional photonic band-gap structures as quasi-metals

    No full text
By considering waves that propagate out of the transverse plane, we show that common high index materials (eg GaAs) with a 2D array of air holes can act in some ways like a 3D photonic band-gap structure. In particular, we describe a dielectric "quasi-metal" that reflects all propagating light incident from free space

Prediction of outcome after paraquat poisoning by measurement of the plasma paraquat concentration

    Get PDF
Background: Paraquat is a herbicide with a good occupational safety record, but a high mortality after intentional ingestion that has proved refractory to treatment. For nearly three decades paraquat concentration-time data have been used to predict the outcome following ingestion. However, none of the published methods has been independently or prospectively validated. We aimed to use prospectively collected data to test the published predictive methods and to determine if any is superior. Methods: Plasma paraquat concentrations were measured on admission for 451 patients in 10 hospitals in Sri Lanka as part of large prospective cohort study. All deaths in hospital were recorded; patients surviving to hospital discharge were followed up after 3 months to detect delayed deaths. Five prediction methods that are based on paraquat concentration-time data were then evaluated in all eligible patients. Results: All methods showed comparable performance within their range of application. For example, between 4- and 24-h prediction of prognosis was most variable between Sawada and Proudfoot methods but these differences were relatively small [specificity 0.96 (95% CI: 0.90-0.99) vs. 0.89 (0.82-0.95); sensitivity 0.57 vs. 0.79, positive and negative likelihood ratios 14.8 vs. 7.40 and 0.44 vs. 0.23 and positive predictive values 0.96 vs. 0.92, respectively]. Conclusions: All five published methods were better at predicting death than survival. These predictions may also serve as tools to identify patients who need treatment and for some assessment to be made of new treatments that are trialled without a control grou

The newly observed open-charm states in quark model

Comparing the measured properties of the newly observed open-charm states D(2550), D(2600), D(2750), D(2760), D_{s1}(2710), D_{sJ}(2860), and D_{sJ}(3040) with our predicted spectroscopy and strong decays in a constituent quark model, we find that: (1) the D(21S0)D(2\,^1S_0) assignment to D(2550) remains open for its too broad width determined by experiment; (2) the D(2600) and Ds1(2710)D_{s1}(2710) can be identified as the 23S12\,^3S_1-13D11\,^3D_1 mixtures; (3) if the D(2760) and D(2750) are indeed the same resonance, they would be the D(13D3)D(1\,^3D_3); otherwise, they could be assigned as the D(13D3)D(1\,^3D_3) and D2(1D)D^\prime_2(1D), respectively; (4) the DsJ(2860)D_{sJ}(2860) could be either the Ds1(2710)D_{s1}(2710)'s partner or the Ds(13D3)D_s(1\,^3D_3); and (5) both the Ds1(2P)D_{s1}(2P) and Ds1(2P)D^\prime_{s1}(2P) interpretations for the DsJ(3040)D_{sJ}(3040) seem likely. The E1E1 and M1M1 radiative decays of these sates are also studied. Further experimental efforts are needed to test the present quarkonium assignments for these new open-charm states.Comment: 26 pages,7 figures, journal versio

It is shown that regularisation by dimensional reduction is a viable alternative to dimensional regularisation in non-supersymmetric theories.Comment: 13 pages, phyzzx, LTH 32

    Ecological model of extinctions

We present numerical results based on a simplified ecological system in evolution, showing features of extinction similar to that claimed for the biosystem on Earth. In the model each species consists of a population in interaction with the others, that reproduces and evolves in time. Each species is simultaneously a predator and a prey in a food chain. Mutations that change the interactions are supposed to occur randomly at a low rate. Extinctions of populations result naturally from the predator-prey dynamics. The model is not pinned in a fitness variable, and natural selection arises from the dynamics.Comment: 16 pages (LaTeX type, RevTeX style), including 6 figures in gif format. To be published in Phys. Quasi-Two-Body Decays of Nonstrange Baryons

We examine the decays of nonstrange baryons to the final states Δπ\Delta\pi, NρN\rho, NηN\eta, NηN\eta^\prime, NωN\omega, N1/2+(1440)πN1/2^+(1440)\pi, and Δ3/2+(1600)π\Delta3/2^+(1600)\pi, in a relativized pair-creation(3P0^3P_0) model which has been developed in a previous study of the NπN\pi decays of the same baryon states. As it is our goal to provide a guide for the possible discovery of new baryon states at CEBAF and elsewhere, we examine the decays of resonances which have already been seen in the partial-wave analyses, along with those of states which are predicted by the quark model but which remain undiscovered. The level of agreement between our calculation and the available widths from the partial-wave analyses is encouraging.Comment: 41 pages, CEBAF-TH-93-1

High rates of suicide and attempted suicide using pesticides in Nickerie, Suriname, South America

    Get PDF
Suicide and attempted suicide are identified as a serious mental health problem in Suriname, especially in the district of Nickerie. An epidemiological study in the Nickerie catchment area revealed high rates of suicide (48 per 100,000) and attempted suicide (207 per 100,000) on average in the years 2000–2004. Particularly remarkable is the high number of attempted suicides among males (49%), and the use of pesticides in both fatal (55%) and nonfatal suicidal behavior (44%). Probably this high incidence of suicidal behavior reflects the very poor economic situation of the district, poverty of most of the population, high levels of alcohol misuse, domestic violence, the rigidity of Hindustani culture regarding family traditions, the accessibility of pesticides, and the lack of future perspectives. Health care alone will not be sufficient to tackle this problem. One of the most urgent measures to prevent suicides is to stow away pesticides in locked cabinets with the key held by the proprietor

K -> pi pi and a light scalar meson

    Get PDF
We explore the Delta-I= 1/2 rule and epsilon'/epsilon in K -> pi pi transitions using a Dyson-Schwinger equation model. Exploiting the feature that QCD penguin operators direct K^0_S transitions through 0^{++} intermediate states, we find an explanation of the enhancement of I=0 K -> pi pi transitions in the contribution of a light sigma-meson. This mechanism also affects epsilon'/epsilon.Comment: 7 pages, REVTE

Evidence for the fourth P11 resonance predicted by the constituent quark model

    Get PDF
It is pointed out that the third of five low-lying P11 states predicted by a constituent quark model can be identified with the third of four states in a solution from a three-channel analysis by the Zagreb group. This is one of the so-called ``missing'' resonances, predicted at 1880 MeV. The fit of the Zagreb group to the pi N -> eta N data is the crucial element in finding this fourth resonance in the P11 partial wave.Comment: 8 pages, revtex; expanded acknowledgement

Weakly bound atomic trimers in ultracold traps

The experimental three-atom recombination coefficients of the atomic states 23^{23}NaF=1,mF=1>|F=1,m_F=-1>, 87^{87}RbF=1,mF=1>|F=1,m_F=-1> and 85^{85}RbF=2,mF=2>|F=2,m_F=-2>, together with the corresponding two-body scattering lengths, allow predictions of the trimer bound state energies for such systems in a trap. The recombination parameter is given as a function of the weakly bound trimer energies, which are in the interval 1<m(a/)2E3<6.9 1<m(a/\hbar)^2 E_3< 6.9 for large positive scattering lengths, aa. The contribution of a deep-bound state to our prediction, in the case of 85^{85}RbF=2,mF=2>|F=2,m_F=-2>, for a particular trap, is shown to be relatively small.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
