    Geographical Segment Disclosures: Usefulness in Forecasting Turnover and Profits of U.K. Multinationals

    There is a considerable quantity of evidence regarding the usefulness of segmental information on a line of business basis. However, there is very little evidence available regarding the value of geographical segment information. The objective of this study is, therefore, to investigate the usefulness of the geographical segment information currently provided by U.K. multinational companies. The uses that geographic segment information may be put to are many and varied. Accordingly, this study examines only one possible use of such information. Namely, whether it can be used to make forecasts of turnover and earnings. One year ahead forecasts of turnover and earnings were made for the years 1981 to 1983 for a sample of 109 U.K. multinational companies. These forecasts were based upon consolidated information, segmental turnover and segmental earnings data. The relative accuracy of the forecasts were then compared using four error measures which were both non-truncated and truncated at 100%. The forecasting models used were six naive consolidated models which represent all the major classes of naive models that evidence on the time series properties of earnings suggests might be useful and six segment based models. The segment models were based upon forecasts of changes in the GNP of individual countries which were then aggregated into segment forecasts with the weights based upon the size of total GNP in each country. Four of the forecasts were based upon various assumptions concerning the importance of inflation and two were based upon expost changes in GNP. Forecasts of earnings using the segmental disclosures were developed in two ways. Firstly, upon segment turnover data combined with the the average earnings to turnover margin and, secondly, upon segment earnings data. Using the models to forecast turnover it was found that the consolidated models significantly outperformed the segment turnover based models. When forecasting earnings it was found that, again, the segment turnover based models did not outperform the consolidated models. However, the segment earnings based models significantly outperformed the segment turnover based models and, in most cases they also outperformed the optimal consolidated model, especially in respect of the non-truncated error measures. Thus, the results are very different from those from prior research into the usefulness of line of business information. For line of business information it was found that segment turnover based models significantly outperformed consolidated models and that the addition of segmental earnings information provided little or no improvement. Several possible reasons for the differences between these results and those found previously for line of business information are suggested

    Newsletter Networks in the Feminist History and Archives Movement

    This article examines how networks have been critical to the construction of feminist histories. The author examines the publication Matrices: A Lesbian/Feminist Research Newsletter (1977–1996), to argue that a feminist network mode can be traced through the examination of small-scale print newsletters that draw on the language and function of networks. Publications such as Matrices emerge into wide production and circulation in the 1970s alongside feminist community archives, and newsletters and archives work together as interconnected social movement technologies. Newsletters enabled activist-researchers writing feminist histories to share difficult-to-access information, resources, and primary sources via photocopying and other modes of print reproduction.  Looking from the present, the author examines how network thinking has been a feature of feminist activism and knowledge production since before the Internet, suggesting that publications such as Matrices are part of a longer history of networked communications media in feminist contexts

    Allanite U–Pb dating places new constraints on the high‐pressure to high‐temperature evolution of the deep Himalayan crust

    During continental collision, crustal rocks are buried, deformed, transformed and exhumed. The rates, timescales and tectonic implications of these processes are constrained through the sequence and conditions of metamorphic reactions in major and accessory phases. Petrographic, isotopic and elemental data from metabasite samples in NW Bhutan, eastern Himalaya, suggest initial equilibration under high-pressure (plagioclase-absent and rutile-present) conditions, followed by decompression to lower pressure conditions at high-temperatures that stabilized plagioclase, orthopyroxene and ilmenite. Field observations and chemical indicators suggest equilibration under the lower pressure conditions is likely linked to the infiltration of melt from the host metasedimentary rocks. The metabasites preserve two metamorphic growth stages of chemically-and petrographically distinct allanite that temporally overlap two stages of zircon growth. Allanite cores and zircon mantles grew at c. 19 ± 2 and 17–15.5 Ma respectively, linked texturally and chemically to the high-pressure evolution. Symplectitic rims on embayed allanite cores, wholly symplectized Aln–Ilm and Aln–Cpx grains, and high U zircon rims grew at c. 15.5–14.5 Ma, linked chemically to the presence of melt and lower pressure, high-temperature conditions. A single garnet Lu–Hf date is interpreted as geologically meaningless, with the bulk rock composition modified by melt infiltration after garnet formation. The open system evolution of these rocks precludes precise determination of the reactive bulk composition during metamorphic evolution and thus absolute conditions, especially during the early high-pressure evolution. Despite these limitations, we show that combined geochemical and petrographic datasets are still able to provide insights into the rates and timescales of deep orogenic processes. The data suggest a younger and shallower evolution for the NW Bhutan metabasites compared to similar rocks in the central and eastern Himalayas

    Identifying and managing patients at risk of severe allergic reactions to food: report from two iFAAM workshops

    Food allergy affects a small but important number of children and adults. Much of the morbidity associated with food allergy is driven by the fear of a severe reaction, and fatalities continue to occur. Foods are the commonest cause of anaphylaxis. One of the aims of the European Union funded Integrated Approaches to Food Allergen and Allergy Risk Management (iFAAM) project was to improve the identification and management of children and adults at risk of experiencing a severe reaction. A number of interconnected studies within the project have focused on quantifying the severity of allergic reactions; the impact of food matrix, immunological factors on severity of reactions; the impact of co‐factors such as medications on the severity of reactions; utilising single dose challenges to understand threshold and severity of reactions; and community studies to understand the experience of patients suffering real‐life allergic reactions to food. Associated studies have examined population thresholds, and co‐factors such as exercise and stress. This paper summarises two workshops focused on the severity of allergic reactions to food. It outlines the related studies being undertaken in the project indicating how they are likely to impact on our ability to identify individuals at risk of severe reactions and improve their management

Thus, it has been assessed according to the criteria of the Animal Health Law (AHL), in particular criteria of Article 7 on disease profile and impacts, Article 5 on its eligibility to be listed, Annex IV for its categorisation according to disease prevention and control rules as in Article 9 and Article 8 for listing animal species related to the bacterium. The assessment has been performed following a methodology previously published. The outcome is the median of the probability ranges provided by the experts, which indicates whether each criterion is fulfilled (lower bound ≥ 66%) or not (upper bound ≤ 33%), or whether there is uncertainty about fulfilment. Reasoning points are reported for criteria with uncertain outcome. According to the assessment here performed, it is uncertain whether AMR R. equi can be considered eligible to be listed for Union intervention according to Article 5 of the AHL (10–66% probability). According to the criteria in Annex IV, for the purpose of categorisation related to the level of prevention and control as in Article 9 of the AHL, the AHAW Panel concluded that the bacterium does not meet the criteria in Sections 1 and 2 (Categories A and B; 5–10% and 10–33% probability of meeting the criteria, respectively), and the AHAW Panel is uncertain whether it meets the criteria in Sections 3, 4 and 5 (Categories C, D and E; 10–66% probability of meeting the criteria in all three categories).     Equine Herpesvirus-1 infection has been assessed according to the criteria of the Animal Health Law (AHL), in particular criteria of: Article 7 on disease profile and impacts, Article 5 on the eligibility of the disease to be listed, Article 9 for the categorisation of the disease according to disease prevention and control measures as in Annex IV and Article 8 on the list of animal species related to Equine Herpesvirus-1 infection. The assessment has been performed following a methodology composed of information collection and compilation, and expert judgement on each criterion at individual and collective level. The outcome is the median of the probability ranges provided by the experts, which indicates whether the criterion is fulfilled (66–100%) or not (0–33%), or whether there is uncertainty about fulfilment (33–66%). For the questions where no consensus was reached, the different supporting views are reported. According to the assessment performed, Equine Herpesvirus-1 infection can be considered eligible to be listed for Union intervention according to Article 5 of the Animal Health Law with 33–90% certainty. According to the criteria as in Annex IV of the AHL related to Article 9 of the AHL for the categorisation of diseases according to the level of prevention and control, it was assessed with less than 1% certainty that EHV-1 fulfils the criteria as in Section 1 (category A), 1–5% for the criteria as in Section 2 (category B), 10–66% for the criteria as in Section 3 (category C), 66–90% for the criteria as in Section 4 (category D) and 33–90% for the criteria as in Section 5 (category E).     Assessment of the control measures of the Category A diseases of the Animal Health Law: prohibitions in restricted zones and risk-mitigating treatments for products of animal origin and other materials

    EFSA received a mandate from the European Commission to assess the effectiveness of prohibitions of certain activities in restricted zones, and of certain risk mitigation treatments for products of animal origin and other materials with respect to diseases included in the Category A list in the Animal Health Law (Regulation (EU) 2016/429). This opinion belongs to a series of opinions where other disease-specific control measures have been assessed. In this opinion, EFSA and the AHAW Panel of experts review the effectiveness of (i) prohibiting the movements of certain products, notably germinal products (semen, oocytes, embryos and hatching eggs), products of animal origin and animal by-products and feed of plant origin, hay and straw, and (ii) risk mitigation treatments for products of animal origin. In terms of semen, oocytes, embryos and hatching eggs, it was agreed that there was a lack of evidence particularly for embryos and oocytes reflected in a varying degree of uncertainty, whether these commodities could potentially contain the pathogen under consideration. The scenario assessed did not consider whether the presence of pathogen would lead to infection in the recipient animal. In terms of animal products, certain animal by-products and movement of feed of plant origin and straw, the assessment considered the ability of the commodity to transmit disease to another animal if exposed. For most pathogens, products were to some degree considered a risk, but lack of field evidence contributed to the uncertainty, particularly as potential exposure of ruminants to meat products is concerned. In terms of the risk mitigating treatments, recommendations have been made for several of these treatments, because the treatment description is not complete, the evidence is poor or inconclusive, or the evidence points to the treatment being ineffective.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
