    A prospective study for the observation of the decays of heavy neutral Higgs bosons into supersymmetric particles at the Large Hadron Collider is presented . The analysis focuses on the decay of the Higgs bosons into a pair of next-to-lightest neutralinos chi2, followed by the cascade down to the lightest neutralino, chi2 to l+ l- chi1. The final state is characterized by the presence of four isolated and missing tranverse energy. The parameter space of the minimal Supergravity model is explored and favorable regions for the observation of the A/H bosons are identified. The A/H bosons could be discovered in the 2e2mu channel in the mass region mA,H (250,400) GeV/c2 with an integrated luminosity of 30 fb-1

    The use of ionic liquids 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium 2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethyl sulfate and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoborate has been tested in the fabrication of anodic porous alumina. The anodizations of the aluminium substrate have been carried out in oxalic acid in galvanostatic mode. During anodization with 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoborate added electrolyte, proper tuning of the current density and of the additive concentration resulted in a three-fold increase of the growth rate as compared to the bare acidic solution with the same acid concentration. This did not cause cracks in the film during growth, and did not affect the regular structure of the pores at the interface with the substrate

    ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURES TO SUPPORT INNOVATION: HOW DO COMPANIES DECIDE?

    The purpose of this work is to discuss the issue of how companies aiming to increase their innovative capacity should decide about their organizational structure. To accomplish this goal, a bibliographic review about the theme was carried out, as well as an exploratory research, conducted by case study in a Brazilian petrochemical company that had recently re-organised its structure regarding innovative activities. The results suggest that the studied company decided upon its organisational structure without considering the whole process of innovation, focusing efforts only on the Research and Development area. Its organizational structure is still based on traditional forms, with centralized decisions and well demarcated functions.     Prevalence and prevention of venous thromboembolism in patients with acute exacerbations of COPD

    Abstract BACKGROUND: Little information exists on the prevalence and prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients admitted for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). OBJECTIVE: To review available literature, we performed a Medline search on papers published on this topic between 1966 and 2003. DATA SYNTHESIS: Pulmonary emboli have been frequently found (up to 30% of cases) in autoptic series that included patients who died from acute exacerbation of COPD, while the real incidence of PE during exacerbation has never been prospectively evaluated by large-scale clinical studies. Diagnosis of concomitant PE in these patients is often missed because symptoms of acute exacerbation of COPD may mimic PE, and non-invasive evaluation by pulmonary scintigraphy or CT scan is less specific. Even if not fatal, undetected and untreated PE may lead to long-term morbidity from pulmonary hypertension and predispose to recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE). DVT of the lower extremities affects about 10% of patients with acute exacerbation of COPD at admission, but the rate is likely to be underestimated. The results of clinical trials conducted on general medical patients, including COPD patients, indicate that unfractionated heparin (UH) and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) significantly reduce VTE rates. However, subgroup data on COPD patients are generally not available. In a single randomised, controlled trial specifically conducted on COPD patients, nadroparin reduced the rate of DVT from 28% to 15% without affecting mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Despite a substantial lack of consistent data, VTE appears as a major threat to patients admitted for acute exacerbation of COPD, and pharmacologic prophylaxis should be considered in all high risk situations. However, methodologically rigorous studies in this setting are still needed

    Surface morphology and optical properties of thin films of thiophene-based binary blends

    We report on the relationship between optical and morphological properties of thin films of a blend of thiophene-based monomer and a diamine derivative. This system is of interest as it gives rise to white emission, due to the formation of exciplex energy levels in the solid state. The photoluminescence emission has been collected for different relative concentrations of the two blend components, and the film topography has been mapped correspondingly by means of atomic force microscopy. Along with a complex evolution of the film surface morphology, a significant variation of the emission properties has been observed upon change of the blend composition. In particular, the intensity of the broad low-energy exciplex band turns out to be affected by a balance of two factors, namely, the extension of homogeneous blend film areas, and their effective concentration

    Near-field spectroscopy of phase segregation in white-light-emitting blends based on low-mass molecules

    We report on the direct observation of phase segregation occurring in thin-film blends of a thiophene monomer and an ammino compound, used in the fabrication of organic white-light-emitting diodes. In the homogeneous and uniform regions of the films, the interaction between the two molecular components gives rise to exciplex states responsible for a broad redshifted photoluminescence emission band, which disappears in the film zones where segregation occurs. This effect has been observed with submicrometer spatial resolution by means of local spectroscopic measurements performed in a scanning near-field optical microscope

    Interfacial Morphology Addresses Performance of Perovskite Solar Cells Based on Composite Hole Transporting Materials of Functionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide and P3HT

    The development of novel hole transporting materials (HTMs) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) that can enhance device's reproducibility is a largely pursued goal, even to the detriment of a very high efficiency, since it paves the way to an effective industrialization of this technology. In this work, we study the covalent functionalization of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) flakes with different organic functional groups with the aim of increasing the stability and homogeneity of their dispersion within a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) HTM. The selected functional groups are indeed those recalling the two characteristic moieties present in P3HT, i.e., the thienyl and alkyl residues. After preparation and characterization of a number of functionalized RGO@P3HT blends, we test the two containing the highest percentage of dispersed RGO as HTMs in PSCs and compare their performance with that of pristine P3HT and of the standard Spiro-OMeTAD HTM. Results reveal the big influence of the morphology adopted by the single RGO flakes contained in the composite HTM in driving the final device performance and allow to distinguish one of these blends as a promising material for the fabrication of highly reproducible PSCs
