Bloch Waves in Crystals and Periodic High Contrast Media

Analytic representation formulas and power series are developed describing the band structure inside periodic photonic and acoustic crystals made from high contrast inclusions. Central to this approach is the identification and utilization of a resonance spectrum for quasi-periodic source free modes. These modes are used to represent solution operators associated with electromagnetic and acoustic waves inside periodic high contrast media. Convergent power series for the Bloch wave spectrum is recovered from the representation formulas. Explicit conditions on the contrast are found that provide lower bounds on the convergence radius. These conditions are sufficient for the separation of spectral branches of the dispersion relation

There are two dimensions that need to be considered in judging the quality of web sites devoted to children and family issues-- information and delivery process. The most important aspect of the web site is the quality of the information. If the information is inaccurate and taken from biased or unreliable sources, then no amount of cleverness in delivery can make up for this problem. Biostratigraphic and Lithostratigraphic Analysis of the Hindsville Limestone (Mississippian) in Northwestern Arkansas

Several lithofacies can be recognized within the Hindsville Limestone (Mississippian) in its type area near Hindsville, Madison County, Arkansas. Lithofacies are based on petrographic analysis of matrix and constituent particles, particularly ooliths and skeletal grains. Hindsville deposition began with skeletal calcilutite incorporating chert rubble from the underlying Boone Formation. Increasing energy produced a sequence of skeletal calcarenites and oolites, and the end of Hindsville deposition was marked by a return to impure skeletal calcilutite. Conodonts recovered from the Hindsville Limestone include species of Cavusgnathus and Gnathodus. On the basis of reported ranges of these elements, the Hindsville appears to correlate with part of the Middle Chesterian Series In its type region

Some Aspects of Printing Quality

The object of this experiment was to find the effect of various pressures upon the ink coverage and the visual appearance of the half-tone print. A specially designed plate with four evenly spaced elevations was used with a Vandercook proof press. Various grades of paper were used. Results showed: a variation in the range of ink coverage due to the grade of paper and the number of lines of the half-tone; within the area of good printing a small change in pressure caused a large change in ink coverage; the change in ink coverage varied from elevation to elevation; an excess of ink was used in this experiment; the optimum printing pressure might have fallen between elevations; and the nature and/or quality of the data gathered did not at this time lend itself to mathematical analysis

Growing Up with Scout and Atticus: Getting from To Kill a Mockingbird Through Go Set a Watchman

This essay argues that Harper Lee’s unexpected but welcomed second novel, Go Set a Watchman, is both a fitting and a disappointing sequel to her beloved debut, To Kill a Mockingbird. It is fitting because it confirms that Atticus Finch, the knowing father of the first novel, despite his noble defense of a falsely accused Black man in the Depression Era South, never was, on closer inspection, much of a Progressive, even on matters of race. That, for many of his admirers, has proved hugely, almost Oedipally, disappointing. But what fits equally well, and disappoints even more, is his adoring daughter Scout’s coming of age. Though twenty-six in the second novel and re-settled in New York City, she is still very much a child of the segregated South. In her second novel as much as in her first, Harper Lee has her heroine learn that, on the things that really matter, her father ultimately knows best. The second novel’s very late arrival thus reminds us of what history has long since taught: “With all deliberate speed” will prove far too fast a pace for some very respectable Southern white folks, both real and imagined
