The Function is Unsaturated
An investigation of what Frege means by his doctrine that functions (and so concepts) are 'unsaturated'. We argue that this doctrine is far less peculiar than it is usually taken to be. What makes it hard to understand, oddly enough, is the fact that it is so deeply embedded in our contemporary understanding of logic and language. To see this, we look at how it emerges out of Frege's confrontation with the Booleans and how it expresses a fundamental difference between Frege's approach to logic and theirs
The Birth of Semantics
We attempt here to trace the evolution of Frege’s thought about truth. What most frames the way we approach the problem is a recognition that hardly any of Frege’s most familiar claims about truth appear in his earliest work. We argue that Frege’s mature views about truth emerge from a fundamental re-thinking of the nature of logic instigated, in large part, by a sustained engagement with the work of George Boole and his followers, after the publication of Begriffsschrift and the appearance of critical reviews by members of the Boolean school

It also discusses his view that truth-values are objects and the so-called regress argument for the indefinability of truth. Analysis of the evolution of research contributions by The Accounting Review, 1926-2005
In her presidential message to the American Accounting Association (AAA) in August 2005, Judy Rayburn discussed the issue of the relatively low citation rate for accounting research compared to finance, management, and marketing. Rayburn concluded that accounting\u27s low citation rate was due to a lack of diversity in topics and research methods. In this paper, we provide a review of the AAA\u27s flagship journal, The Accounting Review (TAR), following its 80 years of publication, and describe why some recent AAA leaders believe that significant changes should be made to the journal\u27s publication and editorial policies. At issue is whether scholarly accounting research is overly focused on mathematical analysis and empirical research, or accountics as it has sometimes been called, at the expense of research that benefits the general practice of accountancy and discovery research on more interesting topics. We conclude from our review of TAR that after mostly publishing research about accounting practices for the first 40 years, a sweeping change in editorial policy occurred in the 1960s and 1970s that narrowly defined scholarly research in accounting as that which employs accountics
Virtual learning environment for interactive engagement with advanced quantum mechanics
A virtual learning environment can engage university students in the learning
process in ways that the traditional lectures and lab formats can not. We
present our virtual learning environment \emph{StudentResearcher} which
incorporates simulations, multiple-choice quizzes, video lectures and
gamification into a learning path for quantum mechanics at the advanced
university level. \emph{StudentResearcher} is built upon the experiences
gathered from workshops with the citizen science game Quantum Moves at the
high-school and university level, where the games were used extensively to
illustrate the basic concepts of quantum mechanics. The first test of this new
virtual learning environment was a 2014 course in advanced quantum mechanics at
Aarhus University with 47 enrolled students. We found increased learning for
the students who were more active on the platform independent of their previous

Presolar Grains from Novae: Evidence from Neon and Helium Isotopes in Comet Dust Collections
Presolar grains in meteorites and interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) carry
non-solar isotopic signatures pointing to origins in supernovae, giant stars,
and possibly other stellar sources. There have been suggestions that some of
these grains condensed in the ejecta of classical nova outbursts, but the
evidence is ambiguous. We report neon and helium compositions in particles
captured on stratospheric collectors flown to sample materials from comets
26P/Grigg-Skjellerup and 55P/Tempel-Tuttle that point to condensation of their
gas carriers in the ejecta of a neon (ONe) nova. The absence of detectable 3He
in these particles indicates space exposure to solar wind (SW) irradiation of a
few decades at most, consistent with origins in cometary dust streams. Measured
4He/20Ne, 20Ne/22Ne, 21Ne/22Ne and 20Ne/21Ne isotope ratios, and a low upper
limit on 3He/4He, are in accord with calculations of nucleosynthesis in neon
nova outbursts. Of these, the uniquely low 4He/20Ne and high 20Ne/22Ne ratios
are the most diagnostic, reflecting the large predicted 20Ne abundances in the
ejecta of such novae. The correspondence of measured Ne and He compositions in
cometary matter with theoretical predictions is evidence for the presence of
presolar grains from novae in the early solar system.Comment: As appeared in the Astrophysical Journa
A review of supply chain quality management practices in sustainable food networks

Food supply chain quality management and associated practices are considerably studied in global food systems, less so for alternative food networks. There are salient differences between global food systems and alternative food networks, which may reflect on the applicable supply chain quality management practices in the food systems and networks. This paper reviews the literature on supply chain quality management practices, with a focus on alternative food networks. A systematic literature review methodology is adopted, resulting in the analysis of seventy-eight papers, identifying a total of one hundred and three supply chain quality management practices. The identified supply chain quality management practices were analysed in relation to their link to a) place, production, and producer and b) link to (bio)processes. Emerging themes from the analysis are discussed, and some areas of future research were put forward.Peer reviewe
