    Obituary: Sydney Anderson (1927–2018)

    On August 12, 2018, the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) lost one of its giants of the latter half of the 20th century when Sydney Anderson quietly passed away at his home in Birmingham, Alabama, at the age of 91. “Syd,” to his many friends and colleagues, was born on January 11, 1927 in Topeka, Kansas, to Robert Grant and Evelyn Fern (Hunt) Anderson. Anderson began his professional career at the University of Kansas, where for four years (1955–1959) he served as Assistant Curator in charge of mammals in the Museum of Natural History, and Instructor in the Department of Zoology while he was undertaking his Ph.D. degree work. In 1960, he took the position (1960–1964) of Assistant Curator of Mammals at the American Museum of Natural History and progressed through the ranks to Associate Curator (1964–1969) and Curator (1969–1992). The breadth of Anderson’s professional scientific interests can be judged both by his publication record and by the societies that he joined as a life member in addition to the ASM—American Institute of Biological Sciences, American Ornithological Association, and the Southwestern Association of Naturalists (Charter Patron)—as well as the other societies in which he held memberships—AAAS (Fellow, 1963), American Ornithologists Union, American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, Ecological Society of America, Society of Systematic Zoology, Wildlife Society, Sigma Xi, and Phi Sigma Biological Society. Anderson was a prolific researcher and author. Authored titles include The Macdonald Encyclopedia of Mammals (1986) and Mammals of Bolivia: Taxonomy and Distribution (1997), the latter of which was his opus work after years of intense work throughout all of Bolivia

    Combining a Dispersal Model with Network Theory to Assess Habitat Connectivity

    Assessing the potential for threatened species to persist and spread within fragmented landscapes requires the identification of core areas that can sustain resident populations and dispersal corridors that can link these core areas with isolated patches of remnant habitat. We developed a set of GIS tools, simulation methods, and network analysis procedures to assess potential landscape connectivity for the Delmarva fox squirrel (DFS; Sciurus niger cinereus), an endangered species inhabiting forested areas on the Delmarva Peninsula, USA. Information on the DFS’s life history and dispersal characteristics, together with data on the composition and configuration of land cover on the peninsula, were used as input data for an individual-based model to simulate dispersal patterns of millions of squirrels. Simulation results were then assessed using methods from graph theory, which quantifies habitat attributes associated with local and global connectivity. Several bottlenecks to dispersal were identified that were not apparent from simple distance-based metrics, highlighting specific locations for landscape conservation, restoration, and/or squirrel translocations. Our approach links simulation models, network analysis, and available field data in an efficient and general manner, making these methods useful and appropriate for assessing the movement dynamics of threatened species within landscapes being altered by human and natural disturbances

    Ptychographic hyperspectral spectromicroscopy with an extreme ultraviolet high harmonic comb

    We demonstrate a new scheme of spectromicroscopy in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range, where the spectral response of the sample at different wavelengths is imaged simultaneously. It is enabled by applying ptychographical information multiplexing (PIM) to a tabletop EUV source based on high harmonic generation, where four spectrally narrow harmonics near 30 nm form a spectral comb structure. Extending PIM from previously demonstrated visible wavelengths to the EUV/X-ray wavelengths promises much higher spatial resolution and more powerful spectral contrast mechanism, making PIM an attractive spectromicroscopy method in both the microscopy and the spectroscopy aspects. Besides the sample, the multicolor EUV beam is also imaged in situ, making our method a powerful beam characterization technique. No hardware is used to separate or narrow down the wavelengths, leading to efficient use of the EUV radiation

    The Neuroscience Information Framework: A Data and Knowledge Environment for Neuroscience

    With support from the Institutes and Centers forming the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research, we have designed and implemented a new initiative for integrating access to and use of Web-based neuroscience resources: the Neuroscience Information Framework. The Framework arises from the expressed need of the neuroscience community for neuroinformatic tools and resources to aid scientific inquiry, builds upon prior development of neuroinformatics by the Human Brain Project and others, and directly derives from the Society for Neuroscience’s Neuroscience Database Gateway. Partnered with the Society, its Neuroinformatics Committee, and volunteer consultant-collaborators, our multi-site consortium has developed: (1) a comprehensive, dynamic, inventory of Web-accessible neuroscience resources, (2) an extended and integrated terminology describing resources and contents, and (3) a framework accepting and aiding concept-based queries.     738–2 The Evolution of Therapy for Single Vessel Disease: A Treatment Comparison of Medicine, Angioplasty and Left Internal Mammary Artery Graft for Proximal Left Anterior Descending Disease

    Saphenous vein bypass grafting for single vessel disease offers no survival or symptom relief advantage compared to medical therapy. Recent evidence suggests the use of the internal mammary artery or PTCA may be more beneficial than medicine. To examine the outcome of these treatment strategies, a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data on 23,018 consecutive patients undergoing cardiac catheterization between April 1986 and February 1994 was performed. Of the 6,432 patients with single vessel disease, 1,222 had a proximal left anterior descending (LAD) stenosis>74% and no prior PTCA or CABG. A total of 289 were managed medically, 760 underwent PTCA, and 172 received a left internal mammary artery (LIMA) graft.Baseline demographic data and risk factor profiles were similar except for a higher incidence of diabetes (19 vs 15 vs 11%), history of MI (72 vs 58 vs 48%) CHF (18 vs 7 vs 8%), and total occlusions (44 vs 17 vs 7%) and lower incidence of unstable angina (40 vs 61 vs 64%) in the medical group as compared to PTCA and LIMA graft, respectively.Kaplan-Meier 6-year estimates:EventsMedicinePTCALIMAP-value–unadjusted survival (%)7885910.001–adjusted survival (%)8486900.24–event-free survival (%)5443720.0001ConclusionThere is a trend towards improved long-term survival in proximal LAD disease with a strategy of revascularization, particularly the LIMA graft.     A coupled terrestrial and aquatic biogeophysical model of the Upper Merrimack River watershed, New Hampshire, to inform ecosystem services evaluation and management under climate and land-cover change

    Accurate quantification of ecosystem services (ES) at regional scales is increasingly important for making informed decisions in the face of environmental change. We linked terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem process models to simulate the spatial and temporal distribution of hydrological and water quality characteristics related to ecosystem services. The linked model integrates two existing models (a forest ecosystem model and a river network model) to establish consistent responses to changing drivers across climate, terrestrial, and aquatic domains. The linked model is spatially distributed, accounts for terrestrial–aquatic and upstream–downstream linkages, and operates on a daily time-step, all characteristics needed to understand regional responses. The model was applied to the diverse landscapes of the Upper Merrimack River watershed, New Hampshire, USA. Potential changes in future environmental functions were evaluated using statistically downscaled global climate model simulations (both a high and low emission scenario) coupled with scenarios of changing land cover (centralized vs. dispersed land development) for the time period of 1980–2099. Projections of climate, land cover, and water quality were translated into a suite of environmental indicators that represent conditions relevant to important ecosystem services and were designed to be readily understood by the public. Model projections show that climate will have a greater influence on future aquatic ecosystem services (flooding, drinking water, fish habitat, and nitrogen export) than plausible changes in land cover. Minimal changes in aquatic environmental indicators are predicted through 2050, after which the high emissions scenarios show intensifying impacts. The spatially distributed modeling approach indicates that heavily populated portions of the watershed will show the strongest responses. Management of land cover could attenuate some of the changes associated with climate change and should be considered in future planning for the region

    Emission Line Galaxies in the STIS Parallel Survey I: Observations and Data Analysis

    In the first three years of operation STIS obtained slitless spectra of approximately 2500 fields in parallel to prime HST observations as part of the STIS Parallel Survey (SPS). The archive contains almost 300 fields at high galactic latitude (|b|>30) with spectroscopic exposure times greater than 3000 seconds. This sample contains 220 fields (excluding special regions and requiring a consistent grating angle) observed between 6 June 1997 and 21 September 2000, with a total survey area of about 160 square arcminutes. At this depth, the SPS detects an average of one emission line galaxy per three fields. We present the analysis of these data, and the identification of 131 low to intermediate redshift galaxies detected by optical emission lines. The sample contains 78 objects with emission lines that we infer to be redshifted [OII]3727 emission at 0.43<z<1.7. The comoving number density of these objects is comparable to that of H-alpha emitting galaxies in the NICMOS parallel observations. One quasar and three probable Seyfert galaxies are detected. Many of the emission-line objects show morphologies suggestive of mergers or interactions.
