AIRNET: A real-time comunications network for aircraft
A real-time local area network was developed for use on aircraft and space vehicles. It uses token ring technology to provide high throughput, low latency, and high reliability. The system was implemented on PCs and PC/ATs operating on PCbus, and on Intel 8086/186/286/386s operating on Multibus. A standard IEEE 802.2 logical link control interface was provided to (optional) upper layer software; this permits the controls designer to utilize standard communications protocols (e.g., ISO, TCP/IP) if time permits, or to utilize a very fast link level protocol directly if speed is critical. Both unacknowledged datagram and reliable virtual circuit services are supported. A station operating an 8 MHz Intel 286 as a host can generate a sustained load of 1.8 megabits per second per station, and a 100-byte message can be delivered from the transmitter's user memory to the receiver's user memory, including all operating system and network overhead, in under 4 milliseconds

Context is Key: Library and Archive Collaboration for Digital Projects
Libraries and archives have different underlying philosophies towards items, metadata, goals, and core processes in their respective fields. With the proliferation of digital libraries and digitization efforts, both kinds of organizations can benefit from working together for the benefit of patrons and researchers. Presented in this article is a case study of a collaboration between the Texas Tech University Libraries Digital Resources Unit (DRU) and the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library (SWC), an archive of cultural heritage materials

Repeated Testing Sessions and Scholastic Aptitude in College Students’ Metacognitive Accuracy
We performed three experiments to examine the effects of repeated study–judgement–test sessions on metacognitive monitoring, and to see if better students (those with higher Scholastic Aptitude Test or SAT scores) outperform low SAT students. In all experiments, mean metacognitive accuracy (bias scores and Gamma correlations) did improve with practice. Most improvement involved students’ ability to predict which items would not be recalled later. In addition, students with high SAT scores recalled more items, were less overconfident, and adjusted their predictions more effectively. Thus, high SAT students may be able to adjust their metacognitive monitoring effectively without feedback, but low SAT students appear unlikely to do so. Educators may need to devise more explicit techniques to help low SAT students improve their metacognitive monitoring during the course of a semester
Toward A Human Behavior Models Anthology for Synthetic Agent Development
This paper describes an effort to foster the availability of Human Behavior Models / Performance Moderator Functions (HBM/PMFs) that the modeling and simulation community can use to increase the realism of their human behavior models. HBM/PMFs quantify the impact of human performance to internal and external stressors, and help to capture the role of personality and individual differences. To facilitate that process, we are creating a web-based anthology of HBM/PMFs that abstracts many 100s of them from diverse literatures, maps them into a taxonomy and common mathematical framework suitable for implementation, and assesses their validity and reuse issues. This paper reports on progress to date, anthology construction issues, and lessons learned

Childhood ADHD and Risk for Substance Dependence in Adulthood: A Longitudinal, Population-Based Study
Background: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are known to be at significantly greater risk for the development of substance use disorders (SUD) compared to peers. Impulsivity, which could lead to higher levels of drug use, is a known symptom of ADHD and likely accounts, in part, for this relationship. Other factors, such as a biologically increased susceptibility to substance dependence (addiction), may also play a role. Objective: This report further examines the relationships between childhood ADHD, adolescent- onset SUD, and substance abuse and substance dependence in adulthood. Method Individuals with childhood ADHD and non-ADHD controls from the same population-based birth cohort were invited to participate in a prospective outcome study. Participants completed a structured neuropsychiatric interview with modules for SUD and a psychosocial questionnaire. Information on adolescent SUD was obtained retrospectively, in a previous study, from medical and school records. Associations were summarized using odds ratios (OR) and 95% CIs estimated from logistic regression models adjusted for age and gender. Results: A total of 232 ADHD cases and 335 non-ADHD controls participated (mean age, 27.0 and 28.6 years, respectively). ADHD cases were more likely than controls to have a SUD diagnosed in adolescence and were more likely to have alcohol (adjusted OR 14.38, 95% CI 1.49–138.88) and drug (adjusted OR 3.48, 95% CI 1.38–8.79) dependence in adulthood. The subgroup of participating ADHD cases who did not have SUD during adolescence were no more likely than controls to develop new onset alcohol dependence as adults, although they were significantly more likely to develop new onset drug dependence. Conclusions: Our study found preliminary evidence that adults with childhood ADHD are more susceptible than peers to developing drug dependence, a disorder associated with neurological changes in the brain. The relationship between ADHD and alcohol dependence appears to be more complex
Measurement of Physical Activity with Wrist-Worn ActiGraph GT3X+ in Older Women
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(7): 1538-1553, 2022. Higher wear compliance has been seen with wrist placed accelerometers versus hip placed. Performance of wrist placed ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometer (GT3X+, ActiGraph LLC, Pensacola, FL) in assessing physical activity (PA) remains unclear. PURPOSE: This study examined GT3X+’s performance in measuring PA energy expenditure (PAEE) and classifying PA intensity in older women. METHODS: Women [n = 89, age = 65.6 (4.3)] wore GT3X+ and SenseWear Armband Mini (SWAM, BodyMedia Inc. Pittsburgh, PA) for 2 weeks. Concurrently, doubly labeled water (DLW) determined total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Resting energy expenditure (REE) was determined by Indirect Calorimetry. Data was processed using manufacturer-provided software. Bivariate correlations, Intra Class Correlations, and Bland-Altman plots were performed to evaluate agreement between GT3X+ and criterion measures for sedentary time, light and moderate-to-vigorous PA (determined by SWAM) and PAEE (determined by SWAM and by DLW and REE). Epoch-by-epoch analysis evaluated discrepancy and agreement of PA intensity classification between GT3X+ and SWAM. RESULTS: For PAEE, GT3X+ showed moderate correlations with criterion measures (r = 0.413, 0.400 with SWAM; r = 0.564, 0.501 with DLW and REE), but Bland-Altman plots showed large variability. When estimating time spent in PA intensity, GT3X+ underestimated sedentary time and overestimated PA intensity compared to SWAM. During epoch-by-epoch analysis, GT3X+ misclassified light intensity PA as moderate-to-vigorous PA 72% of the time. Counts per minute showed strong correlations with criterion measures (r = 0.68, 0.625 for SWAM and DLW and REE respectively). CONCLUSION: Current equations and cut points do not provide accurate measures of PA with wrist-worn GT3X+ in older women
A genomic analysis and transcriptomic atlas of gene expression in Psoroptes ovis reveals feeding- and stage-specific patterns of allergen expression
Background: Psoroptic mange, caused by infestation with the ectoparasitic mite, Psoroptes ovis, is highly contagious, resulting in intense pruritus and represents a major welfare and economic concern for the livestock industry Worldwide. Control relies on injectable endectocides and organophosphate dips, but concerns over residues, environmental contamination, and the development of resistance threaten the sustainability of this approach, highlighting interest in alternative control methods. However, development of vaccines and identification of chemotherapeutic targets is hampered by the lack of P. ovis transcriptomic and genomic resources.
Results: Building on the recent publication of the P. ovis draft genome, here we present a genomic analysis and transcriptomic atlas of gene expression in P. ovis revealing feeding- and stage-specific patterns of gene expression, including novel multigene families and allergens. Network-based clustering revealed 14 gene clusters demonstrating either single- or multi-stage specific gene expression patterns, with 3075 female-specific, 890 male-specific and 112, 217 and 526 transcripts showing larval, protonymph and tritonymph specific-expression, respectively. Detailed analysis of P. ovis allergens revealed stage-specific patterns of allergen gene expression, many of which were also enriched in "fed" mites and tritonymphs, highlighting an important feeding-related allergenicity in this developmental stage. Pair-wise analysis of differential expression between life-cycle stages identified patterns of sex-biased gene expression and also identified novel P. ovis multigene families including known allergens and novel genes with high levels of stage-specific expression.
Conclusions: The genomic and transcriptomic atlas described here represents a unique resource for the acarid-research community, whilst the OrcAE platform makes this freely available, facilitating further community-led curation of the draft P. ovis genome
Measuring Maternal Mortality: Three Case Studies Using Verbal Autopsy with Different Platforms
Accurate measurement of maternal mortality is needed to develop a greater understanding of the scale of the problem, to increase effectiveness of program planning and targeting, and to track progress. In the absence of good quality vital statistics, interim methods are used to measure maternal mortality. The purpose of this study is to document experience with three community-based interim methods that measure maternal mortality using verbal autopsy
