    Sex, lies and self-reported counts: Bayesian mixture models for heaping in longitudinal count data via birth-death processes

    Surveys often ask respondents to report nonnegative counts, but respondents may misremember or round to a nearby multiple of 5 or 10. This phenomenon is called heaping, and the error inherent in heaped self-reported numbers can bias estimation. Heaped data may be collected cross-sectionally or longitudinally and there may be covariates that complicate the inferential task. Heaping is a well-known issue in many survey settings, and inference for heaped data is an important statistical problem. We propose a novel reporting distribution whose underlying parameters are readily interpretable as rates of misremembering and rounding. The process accommodates a variety of heaping grids and allows for quasi-heaping to values nearly but not equal to heaping multiples. We present a Bayesian hierarchical model for longitudinal samples with covariates to infer both the unobserved true distribution of counts and the parameters that control the heaping process.     One of the results from the model definition study showed that the maximum scale factor for a replica model is .25. This is dictated by the fixed dimensions of the Large Spacecraft Lab. Replica scaling laws were applied to simplified theoretical models of joints and the joint/tube/joint system. The practical interpretation of the results for the specific Space Station configuration under study yielded a number of conclusions which are briefly discussed. Detailed suspension analyses were conducted to evaluate the ability of the suspended scale model to emulate the dynamic behavior of the free-free Space Station. The results indicated only a slight preference for smaller scales. A candidate erectable Space Station joint was fabricated at full scale, 1/4 scale and 1/3 scale in order to assess the comparability of the scaled joints to the full scale behavior. Another important question discussed is how well the inherent damping characteristics of the scaled joints compare to those of the full scale joint. The preliminary definition study yielded three separate scale factor recommendations for the scale model

    An investigation is presented of video data compression applied to microgravity space experiments using High Resolution High Frame Rate Video Technology (HHVT). An extensive survey of methods of video data compression, described in the open literature, was conducted. The survey examines compression methods employing digital computing. The results of the survey are presented. They include a description of each method and assessment of image degradation and video data parameters. An assessment is made of present and near term future technology for implementation of video data compression in high speed imaging system. Results of the assessment are discussed and summarized. The results of a study of a baseline HHVT video system, and approaches for implementation of video data compression, are presented. Case studies of three microgravity experiments are presented and specific compression techniques and implementations are recommended

Diel changes in the spawning rate of Acartia clausi were studied during several 24 h time series performed between 1993 and 1997 at several sites in Ebrié Lagoon (Côte d Ivoire) at which the morphology and hydrological structures differed. The daily egg production rate ranged from 8 to 60 eggs female-1 d-1 (5 % to 45 % of body carbon) and varied according to stations and periods. A correlation analysis, performed with the present results, revealed no significant effect of either envi-ronmental factors (salinity, temperature, and chlorophyll a biomass) or individual weight of females. However, the roles of salinity and food abundance (chlorophyll a) appeared when grouping the present data (1993-1997) with results from the same sites obtained previously (1981-1982) by Saint-Jean and Pagano (1984). This grouping showed the importance of inter-annual variations as compared to seasonal variations. The rhythm of egg laying was characterized by a night maximum which occurred earlier in the estuarine zone (22:00-01:00) than in the western oligohaline zone (04:00-06:00).     New Clock Comparison Searches for Lorentz and CPT Violation

    We present two new measurements constraining Lorentz and CPT violation using the Xe-129 / He-3 Zeeman maser and atomic hydrogen masers. Experimental investigations of Lorentz and CPT symmetry provide important tests of the framework of the standard model of particle physics and theories of gravity. The two-species Xe-129 / He-3 Zeeman maser bounds violations of CPT and Lorentz symmetry of the neutron at the 10^-31 GeV level. Measurements with atomic hydrogen masers provide a clean limit of CPT and Lorentz symmetry violation of the proton at the 10^-27 GeV level.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures.     Non-Gaussianity from Self-Ordering Scalar Fields

    The Universe may harbor relics of the post-inflationary epoch in the form of a network of self-ordered scalar fields. Such fossils, while consistent with current cosmological data at trace levels, may leave too weak an imprint on the cosmic microwave background and the large-scale distribution of matter to allow for direct detection. The non-Gaussian statistics of the density perturbations induced by these fields, however, permit a direct means to probe for these relics. Here we calculate the bispectrum that arises in models of self-ordered scalar fields. We find a compact analytic expression for the bispectrum, evaluate it numerically, and provide a simple approximation that may be useful for data analysis. The bispectrum is largest for triangles that are aligned (have edges k1≃2k2≃2k3k_1\simeq 2 k_2 \simeq 2 k_3) as opposed to the local-model bispectrum, which peaks for squeezed triangles (k1≃k2≫k3k_1\simeq k_2 \gg k_3), and the equilateral bispectrum, which peaks at k1≃k2≃k3k_1\simeq k_2 \simeq k_3. We estimate that this non-Gaussianity should be detectable by the Planck satellite if the contribution from self-ordering scalar fields to primordial perturbations is near the current upper limit.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
