    Configuration of the Crucial Set for a Quadratic Rational Map

    Let KK be a complete, algebraically closed non-archimedean valued field, and let φ(z)∈K(z)\varphi(z) \in K(z) have degree two. We describe the crucial set of φ\varphi in terms of the multipliers of φ\varphi at the classical fixed points, and use this to show that the crucial set determines a stratification of the moduli space M2(K)\mathcal{M}_2(K) related to the reduction type of φ\varphi. We apply this to settle a special case of a conjecture of Hsia regarding the density of repelling periodic points in the non-archimedean Julia set

    'Resources to Needs': A Paradigm for Addressing the Potentiality of the Urban Volume

    Underground resources are often addressed only out of necessity, leading to conflicts between uses and missing opportunities for productive synergies. The Deep City project is exploring a paradigm of ‘resources to needs’, which considers resource potentials prior to specific urban projects or plans. Mapping is central to the project and has been explored in several cities around the world. The ‘resources to needs’ paradigm, however, has received little theoretical or philosophical attention. To think resources before needs challenges common urban normative models and the process-oriented thinking of mechanical and ecological paradigms popular today. Where current methods for mapping the underground tend to enroll elements in a particular performance or resource use, Deep City seeks to facilitate an intermediate stage in which resource potentials can coexist without any pre-existing interaction or relationship. To think about the urban volume this way, this article works with the informational motor proposed by French philosopher Michel Serres. The logics of substitution and circulation of the map and its contents helps to think an alternative form of mapping in which the map itself becomes a reservoir of potentiality for thinking the urban volume less in terms of predefined functions and processes than a mass to be collectively cultivated

    Early Glimpses of Women in Ministry within Early Holiness Organizations and the Church of the Nazarene

    Paper first presented at the Women in Ministry Conference held at Glasgow University in May 2012. The conference celebrated the first woman, Olive Winchester, to be ordained in the UK. As a document delivered in a speaking context it does not include the normal documentation. Reading the journals of the three primary groups that merged to form the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene (PCN) in 1907 and 1908 reveals the context that made possible the ordination of Olive Winchester and her early ministry within the PCN. This paper provides glimpses of women minsters through the journals of these early groups and later in the pages of the Herald of Holiness of the PCN. One focus will be to examine how these three early groups argued for the inclusion of women in ordained ministry. Next, we will explore writings of Nazarene women ministers and laywomen and examine their specific contributions. While the pages of these journals tell the story of women finding opportunities within the Nazarene church we can also glimpse women being kept out of certain levels of leadership. The paper concludes by making application to the ministry of women today in the Church of the Nazarene

    Astrocyte effects on hippocampal synaptogenesis in culture and near-field microscopy

    This dissertation presents work in two parts. First, a presentation of effects of astrocytes on synapse formation of hippocampal neurons. The second describes a new near-field microscope for biological samples.;The formation of chemical synapses is a poorly understood process that is likely to critically rely on the presence of molecular cues that arise from presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons as well as associated glial cells. Rat hippocarnpal cultures were established in astrocyte-deplete and enriched conditions to ask whether the presence of astrocytes stimulated formation of chemical synapses. Co-culture with astrocytes selectively augmented formation of excitatory synapses. Immunostaining demonstrated that astrocytes stimulate export of synaptic proteins to the neurites, and the nerve terminal, which on ultrastructural examination were shown to contain increased number of synaptic vesicles within the presynaptic terminal. Also, local contact with astrocytes led to a selective augmentation of the magnitude of the N-type calcium current. The N-type calcium current is known to be associated with newly formed synapses. We propose that local interactions between the process of an astrocyte and developing pre- and postsynaptic terminals will augment calcium influx and thus synaptic transmission to place this tripartite structure at a competitive advantage over neighboring developing synapses that are devoid of interactions with astrocytes.;Sub-diffraction optical resolution achieved using near-field optical microscopy has the potential for new approaches and insights into sub-cellular function and molecular dynamics. Despite this potential it has been difficult to apply near-field microscopy to biology. Sample thickness causes the optical information to be comprised of a composite signal containing both near- and far-field fluorescence. To overcome this issue we have developed an approach in which a near-field optical fiber is translated toward the cell. Increased fluorescence intensity during z-translation contains two components; far-field fluorescence and combined near- and far-field fluorescence. Fitting a regression curve to the far-field intensity as the illumination aperture approaches the cell; it is possible to isolate near-field fluorescent signals. We demonstrate ability to resolve actin filaments in fixed glial cells. Comparison of composite signals with extracted near-field fluorescence demonstrates this approach significantly increases ability to detect sub-cellular structures at sub-diffraction resolution
