    Transient landscape and stratigraphic responses to drainage integration in the actively extending central Italian Apennines

    Drainage networks in continental rifts are generally reported as dynamic features that produce transitions between endorheic and exorheic conditions. While this is of major importance for landscape development, sediment dispersal, and basin stratigraphy, the controls of drainage network evolution across an array of normal fault bounded basins are still not well understood. In this study we use the central Italian Apennines – an area that has been affected by active normal faulting and regional uplift over the last ~3 Myrs – to determine the controls on drainage network evolution and its impact on transient landscape evolution and basin stratigraphy. We compile previously published stratigraphic and fault-related data with new geomorphological constraints for the Aterno River system (~1300 km2), for which a wealth of data has been collected following the destructive L'Aquila earthquake in 2009. We use this compilation to demonstrate how the different basins along the river system were initially isolated during the Early Pleistocene but became fluvially integrated with one another and the Adriatic coast between ca. 1.2 and 0.65 Ma. We conclude that the spatial and temporal pattern of drainage integration is mostly explained by a long-term increase in sediment and water supply relative to basin subsidence due to the Early to Middle Pleistocene climatic transition, the progressive increase in fault-related topography, and the transport of sediment and water down-system as drainage integration occurred. Overall we conclude that rates of sedimentation and basin subsidence in the central Apennines are well-matched, allowing tipping points between over- and under-filled conditions to be easily reached. We also show that consecutive drainage integration events produce discrete waves of river incision and terrace formation, and conclude that drainage integration is of major importance, at least equivalent to tectonics and climate, in controlling transient landscape evolution and rift basin stratigraphy.publishedVersio

    Previous work shows that in adults, illusory embodiment of a virtual avatar can be induced using congruent visuomotor cues. Furthermore, embodying different-sized avatars influences adults’ perception of their environment’s size. This study (N = 92) investigated whether children are also susceptible to such embodiment and size illusions. Adults and 5-year-old children viewed a first-person perspective of different-sized avatars moving either congruently or incongruently with their own body. Participants rated their feelings of embodiment over the avatar and also estimated the sizes of their body and objects in the environment. Unlike adults, children embodied the avatar regardless of visuomotor congruency. Both adults and children freely embodied different-sized avatars, and this affected their size perception in the surrounding virtual environment; they felt that objects were larger in a small body and vice versa in a large body. In addition, children felt that their body had grown in the large body condition. These findings have important implications for both our theoretical understanding of own-body representation, and our knowledge of perception in virtual environments

    The identity, distribution, and impacts of non-native apple snails in the continental United States

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Since the mid 1990s populations of non-native apple snails (Ampullariidae) have been discovered with increasing frequency in the continental United States. Given the dramatic effects that introduced apple snails have had on both natural habitats and agricultural areas in Southeast Asia, their introduction to the mainland U.S. is cause for concern. We combine phylogenetic analyses of mtDNA sequences with examination of introduced populations and museum collections to clarify the identities, introduced distributions, geographical origins, and introduction histories of apple snails.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Based on sampling to date, we conclude there are five species of non-native apple snails in the continental U.S. Most significantly, we recognize three species within what has been called the channeled apple snail: <it>Pomacea canaliculata </it>(California and Arizona), <it>Pomacea insularum</it>, (Florida, Texas, and Georgia) and <it>Pomacea haustrum </it>(Florida). The first established populations of <it>P. haustrum </it>were discovered in the late 1970s in Palm Beach County Florida, and have not spread appreciably in 30 years. In contrast, populations of <it>P. insularum </it>were established in Texas by 1989, in Florida by the mid to late 1990s, and in Georgia by 2005, and this species continues to spread rapidly. Most introduced <it>P. insularum </it>haplotypes are a close match to haplotypes from the RĂ­o Uruguay near Buenos Aires, indicating cold tolerance, with the potential to spread from Florida, Georgia, and Texas through Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina. <it>Pomacea canaliculata </it>populations were first discovered in California in 1997. Haplotypes of introduced <it>P. canaliculata </it>match native-range haplotypes from near Buenos Aires, Argentina, also indicating cold tolerance and the potential to establish farther north.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The term "channeled apple snail" is descriptive of a morphology found in many apple snail species. It does not identify a single species or a monophyletic group. Clarifying species identifications permits a more accurate assessment of introduction histories and distributions, and provides a very different picture of the tempo and pattern of invasions than was inferred when the three species with channeled sutures were considered one. Matching introduced and native-range haplotypes suggests the potential for range expansion, with implications for native aquatic ecosystems and species, agriculture, and human health.</p

    My body until proven otherwise: Exploring the time course of the full body illusion

    Evidence from the Full Body Illusion (FBI) has shown that adults can embody full bodies which are not their own when they move synchronously with their own body or are viewed from a first-person perspective. However, there is currently no consensus regarding the time course of the illusion. Here, for the first time, we examined the effect of visuomotor synchrony (synchronous/asynchronous/no movement) on the FBI over time. Surprisingly, we found evidence of embodiment over a virtual body after five seconds in all conditions. Embodiment decreased with increased exposure to asynchronous movement, but remained high in synchronous and no movement conditions. We suggest that embodiment of a body seen from a first-person perspective is felt by default, and that embodiment can then be lost in the face of contradictory cues. These results have significant implications for our understanding of how multisensory cues contribute to embodiment

    The COVID-19 Pandemic and Its Implications for Rural Economies

    This paper presents a rapid assessment of current and likely future impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak on rural economies given their socio-economic characteristics. Drawing principally on current evidence for the UK, as well as lessons from the 2001 Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak and the 2007/8 financial crises, it outlines the likely key demand and supply effects, paying attention to the situation for agriculture as well as discussing the implications for rural communities. A distinction is made between the effects on businesses offering goods and services for out-of-home as opposed to in-home consumption. Gendered dimensions are also noted as likely business and household strategies for coping and adaptation. The paper concludes with a brief mapping of a research agenda for studying the longer-term effects of COVID-19 on rural economies

    This contribution summarizes knowledge of organisms associated with apple snails, mainly Pomacea spp., either in a facultative or obligate manner, paying special attention to diseases transmitted via these snails to humans. A wide spectrum of epibionts on the shell and operculum of snails are discussed. Among them algae, ciliates, rotifers, nematodes, flatworms, oligochaetes, dipterans, bryozoans and leeches are facultative, benefitting from the provision of substrate, transport, access to food and protection. Among obligate symbionts, five turbellarian species of the genus Temnocephala are known from the branchial cavity, with T. iheringi the most common and abundant. The leech Helobdella ampullariae also spends its entire life cycle inside the branchial cavity; two copepod species and one mite are found in different sites inside the snails. Details of the nature of the relationships of these specific obligate symbionts are poorly known. Also, extensive studies of an intracellular endosymbiosis are summarized. Apple snails are the first or second hosts of several digenean species, including some bird parasites. A number of human diseases are transmitted by apple snails, angiostrongyliasis being the most important because of the potential seriousness of the disease.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
