[First Paragraph] During winter/spring, 2005, 2,103 Troops to Teachers (T3) program completers and their school administrators from 49 states and the District of Columbia were surveyed to determine whether T3s were more effective in the classroom than traditionally prepared teachers who had comparable years of teaching experience. Respondents also returned information about their schools’ demographics, views about their teacher certification preparation program, and information about themselves, their teaching behaviors, and future plans. Sixty-one percent of the respondents returned completed surveys

    1,4-Di-n-heptyloxy-2,5-dinitrobenzene

The complete molecule of the title compound, C20H32N2O6, is generated by crystallographic inversion symmetry. The two mutually trans nitro substituents are hence in fully eclipsed conformation and also twisted by 43.2 (2)° with respect to the phenyl ring plane. The benzene-connected portions of the alkoxy substituents lie almost coplanar with the ring [C—O—C—C torsion angle = 2.0 (2)°]. In the crystal, weak C—H⋯O interactions link the molecules

Career patterns of U.S. male academic social scientists

Seventy-four U.S. male academic social scientists provided career stage data. All were born between 1893 and 1903. The subjects were divided into four groups on the basis of their scholarly article productivity after age 59. Spilerman's conceptualization of work history guided the analysis. To a lesser extent, adult development theory (e.g., Hall and Nougaim, 1968) was also examined.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/42843/1/10734_2004_Article_BF00139794.pd

The Unique Origin of Colors of Armchair Carbon Nanotubes

The colors of suspended metallic colloidal particles are determined by their size-dependent plasma resonance, while those of semiconducting colloidal particles are determined by their size-dependent band gap. Here, we present a novel case for armchair carbon nanotubes, suspended in aqueous medium, for which the color depends on their size-dependent excitonic resonance, even though the individual particles are metallic. We observe distinct colors of a series of armchair-enriched nanotube suspensions, highlighting the unique coloration mechanism of these one-dimensional metals.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

An appropriate tool for entrepreneurial learning in SMEs? The case of the 20Twenty Leadership Programme

    Get PDF
The 20Twenty Leadership Programme was developed by Cardiff Metropolitan University as an executive education programme to be delivered within South Wales to small businesses. It is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and administered by the Welsh European Funding Office and has the key aim of developing SME’s growth potential via a range of leadership and management skills, including a focus on ‘soft’ skills. The focus of this paper is to place the 20Twenty Leadership Programme within the wider context of entrepreneurship policy and SME training initiatives in particular, and then to examine the rationale and delivery methods of the Programme in relation to these. It also reflects on the Programme’s success (or otherwise) to date where possible. Finally, the paper seeks to suggest fruitful areas of further research both in terms of the 20Twenty Leadership Programme itself, but also with regard to evaluation in relation to other parallel programmes, and to SME training initiatives more generally

Octahedral Trifluoromagnesate, an Anomalous Metal Fluoride Species, Stabilizes the Transition State in a Biological Motor

    Get PDF
Isoelectronic metal fluoride transition state analogue (TSA) complexes, MgF3- and AlF4-, have proven to be immensely useful in understanding mechanisms of biological motors utilizing phosphoryl transfer. Here we report a previously unobserved octahedral TSA complex, MgF3(H2O)-, in a 1.5 Å resolution Zika virus NS3 helicase crystal structure. 19F NMR provided independent validation and also the direct observation of conformational tightening resulting from ssRNA binding in solution. The TSA stabilizes the two conformations of motif V of the helicase that link ATP hydrolysis with mechanical work. DFT analysis further validated the MgF3(H2O)- species, indicating the significance of this TSA for studies of biological motors

“Cloning” in academe: Mentorship and academic careers

Mentor professors were surveyed with respect to their most successful “protĂ©gĂ©s” regarding scholarly production, the mentorship role, and their careers. Career stage, network stratification, and weak-tie theories provided the conceptual frameworks. The 62 mentors were highly productive professors who were predominantly both graduates and employees of research universities. Mentors overwhelmingly nominated as their most successful protĂ©gĂ©s those whose careers were essentially identical to their own—i.e., their “clones.” Women mentors named as most successfully protĂ©gĂ©s more than twice as many females and males than men did. More productive mentors linked with a greater number of protĂ©gĂ©s but were less knowledgable about their personal lives, as Granovetter's theory would predict. The results also demonstrate the openness of the network within stratified levels.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/43588/1/11162_2004_Article_BF00973512.pd

Phylogenetic Relationships of Southern African West Nile Virus Isolates

    Get PDF
Phylogenetic relationships were examined for 29 southern African West Nile virus (formal name West Nile virus [WNV]) isolates from various sources in four countries from 1958 to 2001. In addition sequence data were retrieved from GenBank for another 23 WNV isolates and Kunjin and Japanese encephalitis viruses. All isolates belonged to two lineages. Lineage 1 isolates were from central and North Africa, Europe, Israel, and North America; lineage 2 isolates were from central and southern Africa and Madagascar. No strict correlation existed between grouping and source of virus isolate, pathogenicity, geographic distribution, or year of isolation. Some southern African isolates have been associated with encephalitis in a human, a horse, and a dog and with fatal hepatitis in a human and death of an ostrich chick
