    Rite to Death, Left to Life: Death Ritual as a Cross-Cultural Unit of Analysis

    Death ritual is a nearly ubiquitous aspect of life within civilization, and serves the purpose of reconciling the logical positivist societal constructions that uphold social order with the fundamentally logic-breaking nature of death. This paper posits that death ritual serves as a strong cross-cultural unit of analysis as it provides insight into the defining socio-cultural traits and spiritual outlooks of different cultures. This unit of analysis is applied to Song-era Ch’an Buddhism, pre-colonial Hindu India, and Maori death ritual. For each of these examples, death rites are connected to aspects of art, culture, social organization, and spirituality or religion, and they are examined in relation to one another. The paper concludes with a further analysis of the consistent role death ritual plays in maintaining positivist social systems while being adapted to the disparate cultural needs of a given society

    Promoting Social Emotional Engagement through a Universal Design for Learning

    A positive, caring, and supportive school environment paired with high levels of student engagement and motivation for learning are key factors that significantly influence a student’s success in school and, as a result, for life beyond. With school districts tasked to educate a diverse student population with a range of abilities and learning styles, teachers are challenged to maintain high levels of motivation and engagement to facilitate learning within their individual classrooms. An innovative program through the Marcus Autism Center specifically addresses these challenges within the context of the classroom through a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework relevant for all students in both the general education and special education settings. Based on the most current social neuroscience and on normative social emotional guidelines, the SEE-KS program facilitates teachers’ ability to meet the needs of all students through proactive planning that considers students’ developmental levels and learning styles. By mentoring coaching teams at both the district and school levels, SEE-KS additionally places special emphasis on building on-site capacity of school districts through a financially sustainable staff development program. Videos and results of current collaborations between Marcus and several Georgia school districts will highlight SEE-KS’ potential to impact a range of students in Georgia’s schools.     Optical Identification of He White Dwarfs Orbiting Four Millisecond Pulsars in the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae

    We used ultra-deep UV observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope to search for optical companions to binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. We identified four new counterparts (to MSPs 47TucQ, 47TucS, 47TucT and 47TucY) and confirmed those already known (to MSPs 47TucU and 47TucW). In the color magnitude diagram, the detected companions are located in a region between the main sequence and the CO white dwarf cooling sequences, consistent with the cooling tracks of He white dwarfs of mass between 0.15 Msun and 0.20 Msun. For each identified companion, mass, cooling age, temperature and pulsar mass (as a function of the inclination angle) have been derived and discussed. For 47TucU we also found that the past accretion history likely proceeded in a sub-Eddington rate. The companion to the redback 47TucW is confirmed to be a non degenerate star, with properties particularly similar to those observed for black widow systems. Two stars have been identified within the 2-sigma astrometric uncertainty from the radio positions of 47TucH and 47TucI, but the available data prevent us from firmly assessing whether they are the true companions of these two MSPs.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication by Ap

    The effect of functional roles on group efficiency

    The usefulness of ‘roles’ as a pedagogical approach to support small group performance can be often read, however, their effect is rarely empirically assessed. Roles promote cohesion and responsibility and decrease so-called ‘process losses’ caused by coordination demands. In addition, roles can increase awareness of intra-group interaction. In this article, the effect of functional roles on group performance, efficiency and collaboration during computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) was investigated with questionnaires and quantitative content analysis of e-mail communication. A comparison of thirty-three questionnaire observations, distributed over ten groups in two research conditions: role (n = 5, N = 14) and non-role (n = 5, N = 19), revealed no main effect for performance (grade). A latent variable was interpreted as ‘perceived group efficiency’ (PGE). Multilevel modelling (MLM) yielded a positive marginal effect of PGE. Groups in the role condition appear to be more aware of their efficiency, compared to groups in the ‘non-role’ condition, regardless whether the group performs well or poor. Content analysis reveals that students in the role condition contribute more ‘task content’ focussed statements. This is, however, not as hypothesised due to the premise that roles decrease coordination and thus increase content focused statements; in fact, roles appear to stimulate coordination and simultaneously the amount of ‘task content’ focussed statements increases

    Radio Timing and Optical Photometry of the Black Widow System PSR J1953+1846A in the Globular Cluster M71

    We report on the determination of the astrometric, spin and orbital parameters for PSR J1953+1846A, a "black widow" binary millisecond pulsar in the globular cluster M71. By using the accurate position and orbital parameters obtained from radio timing, we identified the optical companion in ACS/Hubble Space Telescope images. It turns out to be a faint (m_F606W>=24, m_F814W>=23) and variable star located at only ~0.06" from the pulsar timing position. The light curve shows a maximum at the pulsar inferior conjunction and a minimum at the pulsar superior conjunction, thus confirming the association with the system. The shape of the optical modulation suggests that the companion star is heated, likely by the pulsar wind. The comparison with the X-ray light curve possibly suggests the presence of an intra-binary shock due to the interaction between the pulsar wind and the material released by the companion. This is the second identification (after COM-M5C) of an optical companion to a black widow pulsar in a globular cluster. Interestingly, the two companions show a similar light curve and share the same position in the color magnitude diagram.Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ; 33 Pages, 10 Figures, 3 Table

    Bayesian optimization of the PC algorithm for learning Gaussian Bayesian networks

    The PC algorithm is a popular method for learning the structure of Gaussian Bayesian networks. It carries out statistical tests to determine absent edges in the network. It is hence governed by two parameters: (i) The type of test, and (ii) its significance level. These parameters are usually set to values recommended by an expert. Nevertheless, such an approach can suffer from human bias, leading to suboptimal reconstruction results. In this paper we consider a more principled approach for choosing these parameters in an automatic way. For this we optimize a reconstruction score evaluated on a set of different Gaussian Bayesian networks. This objective is expensive to evaluate and lacks a closed-form expression, which means that Bayesian optimization (BO) is a natural choice. BO methods use a model to guide the search and are hence able to exploit smoothness properties of the objective surface. We show that the parameters found by a BO method outperform those found by a random search strategy and the expert recommendation. Importantly, we have found that an often overlooked statistical test provides the best over-all reconstruction results

    Postdischarge assessment after a heart failure hospitalization: the next step forward.

    Heart failure (HF) is the most frequent cause of hospitalization for patients >65 years of age. Mortality during the initial hospitalization ranges from 6% to 7% in Europe to 3% to 4% in the United States, depending on the length of hospital stay. Poor outcomes have universally been shown after discharge, with 60- to 90-day mortality rates of 5% to 15% and hospital readmission rates of 30%. Whereas the prognosis of patients with chronic HF has improved in recent years, there has been no change in the high risk of death or rehospitalization after an HF hospitalization. In addition to the lack of new therapies, incomplete relief from fluid overload, insufficient patient education, lack of implementation of evidence-based therapies, and poor postdischarge follow-up planning are among the main causes of these poor outcomes. A better assessment of the patient at the time of discharge and in the following weeks seems therefore as mandatory. This article outlines the main components of such a program. These include the personnel who should be involved, i.e. HF specialists and cardiologists versus non-specialists, the variables which should be assessed, i.e. those related with congestion and fluid overload, the times when they should be assessed, as the phase at highest risk is immediately after discharge from hospital, and, finally, the aims of such programs. We retain that an improvement of post-discharge follow-up will be able to significantly improve patients’ outcomes with a rate of success comparable, if not greater, to that which can be achieved by new therapies
