    In vitro regeneration of Basella alba L

    Basella alba L. is a tropical vine used as a vegetable in some Asian and African countries. It has potential as a nontraditional crop for small family farms. A short day plant, it blooms during the fall, provided the temperatures are mild. In the southeastern U.S., the short days of fall are associated with subfreezing temperatures, and plants are killed before blooming. Attempts were made to regenerate the plant using tissue culture techniques. Several trials were conducted with different media, hormones, and explants. It was found that nodal segments on Gamborg medium regenerated shoots. Interaction studies of auxins and cytokinins indicated that its endogeneous auxin content might be high because callus proliferated in almost all treatments and roots initiated even when the medium was not supplemented with an auxin

    A Case of an Anomalous Right Coronary Artery Arising from the Left Coronary Cusp

    An anomalous origin of the right coronary artery is usually asymptomatic. It is mostly found incidentally on an invasive diagnostic angiogram. It does lead to an increased risk of sudden cardiac death, especially in younger patients. We present a case of a 41-year-old who had presented to the hospital with complaints of chest pain. The patient was evaluated by cardiology who performed an angiography that identified an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery arising from the left coronary cusp but no evidence of coronary artery disease. Once identified, these anomalous vessels should be corrected surgically, as these conditions increase the risk of sudden cardiac death arrhythmia and ischemic events

    Simulating Cotton Growth and Productivity Using AquaCrop Model under Deficit Irrigation in a Semi-Arid Climate

    AquaCrop is a water-driven model that simulates the effect of environment and management on crop production under deficit irrigation. The model was calibrated and validated using three databases and four irrigation treatments (i.e., 100%ET, 80%ET, 70%ET, and 50%ET). Model performance was evaluated by simulating canopy cover (CC), biomass accumulation, and water productivity (WP). Statistics of root mean square error (RMSE) and Willmott’s index of agreement (d) showed that model predictions are suitable for non-stressed and moderate stressed conditions. The results showed that the simulated biomass and yield were consistent with the measured values with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.976 and 0.950, respectively. RMSE and d-index values for canopy cover (CC) were 2.67% to 4.47% and 0.991% to 0.998% and for biomass were 0.088 to 0.666 ton/ha and 0.991 to 0.999 ton/ha, respectively. Prediction of simulated and measured biomass and final yield was acceptable with deviation ˂10%. The overall value of R2 for WP in terms of yield was 0.943. Treatment with 80% ET consumed 20% less water than the treatment with 100%ET and resulted in high WP in terms of yield (0.6 kg/m3) and biomass (1.74 kg/m3), respectively. The deviations were in the range of −2% to 11% in yield and −2% to 4% in biomass. It was concluded that AquaCrop is a useful tool in predicting the productivity of cotton under different irrigation scenarios

    Congenital anomaly of coronary artery: absence of left circumflex artery

    The prevalence of congenital coronary artery anomalies is approximately 1% in the general population. They are a common cause of sudden death in younger persons. Congenital absence of the left circumflex artery is usually a benign condition but can cause symptoms of exertional angina. We present a case of a 59-year-old female who presented with complaints of chest pain. She was evaluated by the cardiology service. An invasive angiogram identified the absence of the circumflex artery, a large right coronary artery, and large septal and diagonal branches of the left main coronary artery possibly as a compensatory mechanism to supply blood to the LCx territories. It is important to define coronary anatomy as anomalies dictate which cardiac intervention should be attempted in cases of ischemia

    Characterization of cowpea to harvest rainwater for wheat in semiarid conditions

    Aim of study: A field experiment was executed, under rainfed conditions from 2014-15 to 2017-18, to study the role of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) in rainwater harvesting to enhance the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield.Area of study: Rain-fed area of Pothwar region, Punjab, Pakistan.Material and methods: We designed three treatments (T1: control; T2: cowpea grown after conventional tillage and incorporated into soil to act as “green manure”; and T3: grown without any tillage practice, cut with sickle and spread as “mulch”). The effect of these treatments on soil moisture conservation was studied against conventional farmer’s practice, wherein no host crop is grown before wheat sowing.Main results: Available soil water remained highest in T2 during first three years when sufficient rainfall was received contrary to fourth year with low rainfall. The results revealed that cowpea biomass of 15.2 t/ha and 13.72 t/ha, from T2 and T3 respectively, were produced during 2015 corresponding to 213 mm rainfall. Whereas, these quantities increased to 25.69 t/ha and 24.29 t/ha during 2017 with 387 mm of rainfall. The study revealed that net income from wheat crop under T2 was Rs 13000 and Rs 9000 per hectare higher than that of control during the first two years respectively. Contrarily, net income from T2 was found negative and benefit-cost ratio reduced to 0.79 when very low rainfall was received during the last year.Research highlights: Use of cowpea as green manure gave maximum net return if sufficient rainfall is received during decomposition of cowpea and hence recommended for in-situ rainwater harvesting

    This is an analytical study and deals with the Pak-India peace process and efforts for resolving the Kashmir Issue during the Musharraf government (2003-2007). After an extremely tense phase in Pakistan-India relations during which India mobilized troops against Pakistani border, the process of normalization began in April 2003. Initiation by Pakistan of Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) led to improvement in the atmosphere between the two countries. At a rally in Srinagar on 18th April 2003, the Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee announced that he was willing to extend a hand of friendship to Pakistan. Since Pakistan had always advocated resolution of all issues between India and Pakistan including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir through peaceful means. Prime Minister of Pakistan Zafarullah Khan Jamali welcomed the announcement and called the Indian Prime Minister on telephone inviting him to visit Pakistan. a formal invitation was also sent hereafter which led to the resumption of dialogue between the two countries and as usual remained without results

    The Polygraph and Lie Detection: A Case Study

    There are many cases in which physical evidence is missing. In such instances, a polygraph is a useful technique to determine the examinee’s truthfulness or deception. A polygraph is an instrument that monitors the changes inside the body. The present study was conducted to determine the truthfulness of the victim and suspects in a hand chopping case. In the present study, integrated zone comparison technique (IZCT) and forensic assessment interview (FAINT) were used to test the suspects and the victim. Computerized ASIT Algorithm and weighted scoring systems were used in IZCT and FAINT, respectively. Two suspects and one victim were referred for polygraph examination. Electro-dermal activity sensors were placed on the victim’s forehead as he did not have arms, and a cardio cuff was placed on his left leg. During the initial interview, the victim alleged that his hands were put forcibly into a machine. All the suspects were also tested, and the victim was found to be deceptive. He later confessed that his hands were not put forcibly into machine. After testing, it was found that all the suspects were truthful

    Risk factors for acute respiratory infections in children between 0 and 23 months of age in a peri-urban district in Pakistan: A matched case–control study

    Background: Acute respiratory infection (ARI) accounts for nearly 15% of all childhood mortality in South Asia, with children from rural areas at higher risk due to inaccessibility to healthcare facilities. We therefore aimed to identify risk factors associated with ARI in children under 2 years of age in rural Pakistan. Methods: A retrospective 1:2 matched case-control study was conducted between October and December 2018 in Taluka Kotri, Jamshoro District of Pakistan. Cases were identified as children between 0 and 23 months of age with a history of fever, cough, sore throat, fast breathing, difficulty breathing, or chest indrawing in the 2 weeks prior to the survey. Controls were participants without symptoms of ARI, matched based on age in months. Data analysis was conducted using STATA version 15. Univariate and multivariable conditional logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with ARI, and p \u3c 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: We identified 1,071 cases of ARI who were matched with 2,142 controls. Multivariable analysis revealed that female gender [odds ratio (OR) 0.78, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.67-0.91], exclusive breastfeeding (OR 0.81, 95% CI: 0.69-0.97), and comorbidity with diarrhea (OR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.40-1.91) were significantly associated with ARI. Conclusion: Pakistan continues to progress toward reducing childhood mortality, particularly ARI-related deaths, for which it bears a great burden. This study identifies risk factors such as the male gender, breastfeeding, and comorbidities with diarrhea, which could open grounds for further programmatic implications in targeting a multifaceted approach to reducing incidences of ARI in rural areas of the country

    A retrospective observational study: Is absolute lymphocyte count a prognostic marker in COVID-19?

    Aim: Our study aimed to find a correlation between low absolute lymphocyte count and COVID-19-related mortality.Methods: This study followed a retrospective observational cohort design to analyze the data of patients who presented with symptoms and signs of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), at the Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne District General Hospital in East Sussex, United Kingdom, between February 10, 2020 and May 1, 2020, retrospectively. Survival and mortality for the first 30 days and comorbidities were analyzed for all patients who were tested for COVID-19 irrespective of swab results and had blood lymphocyte levels taken at the time of their visit to the ED and their data were analyzed for statistical significance.Results: A total of 1226 patients had SARS-CoV-2 RNA identification swabs taken between February 10, 2020 and May 1, 2020. A cohort of 742 patients of these patients tested for COVID-19 also had blood lymphocyte levels measured.Overall, the lymphocyte count did not differ significantly between patients suspected to have COVID-19 infection with either positive or negative COVID-19 swab results.The lymphocyte count, however, was significantly lower in those who died from COVID-19 (p \u3c 0.001) but when comorbidities were analyzed, we found an association between an increased number of comorbidities and a significantly decreased lymphocyte count.Conclusion: Once adjusted for comorbidities, the lymphocyte count had no association with COVID-19 infection and mortality
