    Development of two reference materials for all trans-retinol, retinyl palmitate, α- and γ-tocopherol in milk powder and infant formula

    AbstractVitamins are important food constituents that can be present in almost every foodstuff. Food quality and safety depends on food surveillance by reliable quantitative analysis enabled by appropriate quality control. Certified matrix reference materials are versatile tools to support quality assurance and control. However, in the case of vitamins, which are important in various foods, there is a lack of matrix reference materials. Two certified reference materials for the determination of all–trans-retinol, retinyl palmitate, and α- and γ-tocopherol in milk powder and infant formula have been developed by the National Institute of Standards, Egypt. This article presents the preparation, characterization, homogeneity, and stability testing as well as statistical treatment of data and certified value assignment. The assignment of the certified values and associated uncertainties in the prepared natural-matrix reference materials were based on the widely used approach of combining data from independent and reliable analytical methods

    Extraction of certain heavy metals from sewage sludge using different types of acids

    The removal of heavy metal from sludge before disposal or application to farmland is a necessary step to achieve a more safe sludge usage or disposal. Chemical extraction using inorganic acids (nitric, hydrochloric) and organic acids (citric, oxalic) were tested for extraction of chromium, copper, nickel, lead and zinc from contaminated sewage sludge at different pH and reaction time. Results revealed that solubilization of metals using inorganic acids achieved its maximum extraction efficiency (Cr-88%, Cu-82%, Ni-86%, Pb-94%, Zn-89%) at pH value lower than 2 and acid contact times of 1hour. while in case of organic acids oxalic acid does not show good results comparing to citric acid that at pH 2.43 citric acid seemed to be highly effective in extracting Cu (86%), Zn(88%), mostly after 1 day of extraction time, Cr (90%), Ni (96%) at 5 days leaching time, while Pb(85%) removal at the same pH was at a longer leaching time 10 days. At pH 3, citric acid seemed to be also highly effective in extracting Cr (66%), Cu(48%), Pb (66%), Zn(69%) at 1 day, while higher removal was also attained for Ni(68%) at only 4 h leaching time. Finally the extraction efficiencies of citric acid for Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, are high enough to reduce the heavy metal content in sludge to levels below the legal standards

    Burnout among surgeons before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: an international survey

    Background: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had many significant impacts within the surgical realm, and surgeons have been obligated to reconsider almost every aspect of daily clinical practice. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study reported in compliance with the CHERRIES guidelines and conducted through an online platform from June 14th to July 15th, 2020. The primary outcome was the burden of burnout during the pandemic indicated by the validated Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure. Results: Nine hundred fifty-four surgeons completed the survey. The median length of practice was 10 years; 78.2% included were male with a median age of 37 years old, 39.5% were consultants, 68.9% were general surgeons, and 55.7% were affiliated with an academic institution. Overall, there was a significant increase in the mean burnout score during the pandemic; longer years of practice and older age were significantly associated with less burnout. There were significant reductions in the median number of outpatient visits, operated cases, on-call hours, emergency visits, and research work, so, 48.2% of respondents felt that the training resources were insufficient. The majority (81.3%) of respondents reported that their hospitals were included in the management of COVID-19, 66.5% felt their roles had been minimized; 41% were asked to assist in non-surgical medical practices, and 37.6% of respondents were included in COVID-19 management. Conclusions: There was a significant burnout among trainees. Almost all aspects of clinical and research activities were affected with a significant reduction in the volume of research, outpatient clinic visits, surgical procedures, on-call hours, and emergency cases hindering the training.     This essay continues a project begun a decade ago with the article, “A Matter of Life and Debt: The Untold Costs of Rafiq Hariri’s New Beirut.” This new article, or “Postscript,” begins by examining the reception of that first investigation and responds to one criticism directed at the original essay: that it proffers an unfairly pessimistic profile of the reconstruction effort generally and of its prime mover specifically, the now-deceased Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. This paper follows a cost/benefits analysis of the project and the company behind it, Solidere, and examines two other Solidere-styled developments abroad, both results of the company’s attempts to monetize its so-called “brand.” The first of these, “Abdali,” is in Amman. The second of these comprises a trio of projects that SI prepared for Sheikh Zayed City in metropolitan Cairo. The paper argues that Solidere’s failure to disclose the dubious financial dealings behind such projects further erodes the credibility of a company for whom the notion of “business as usual” works first and foremost to benefit the few at the expense of the many

    Development of ionophore-based nanosphere emulsion incorporating ion-exchanger for complexometric titration of thiocyanate anion

    Ionophore-based ion-exchange nanosphere emulsion was prepared and tested for the determination of thiocyanate. The emulsified nanosphere contained the cationic additive tridodecylmethyl ammonium chloride (TDMAC), the plasticizer, and the ionophore Mn(III)-salophen or Mn(III)-salen. This emulsion was used as titrating agent for thiocyanate complexation with ionophores, which could be transduced using an ion-selective electrode (ISE) as an indicator electrode for the end point detection. The method showed no need for pH control and reliable selectivity, as thiocyanate could be determined in presence of other interfering ions with high accuracy. As well, the emulsion was stable and could be used for approximately couple of weeks. The developed emulsion could be used for the determination of thiocyanate in human saliva with standard deviation <4%. In sum, the proposed method could be used as an alternative for the argentometric titration and would open new avenues for the determination of neutral, anionic, and cationic species without necessity for water soluble ligands or pH control

    Impact of White Noise on the Exact Solutions of the Stochastic Riemann Wave Equation in Quantum Mechanics

    In this article, the stochastic Riemann wave equation (SRWE) forced by white noise in the Itô sense is considered. The extended tanh function and mapping methods are applied to obtain new elliptic, rational, hyperbolic, and trigonometric stochastic solutions. Furthermore, we generalize some previous studies. The obtained solutions are important in explaining some exciting physical phenomena, since the SRWE is required for describing wave propagation. We plot numerous 3D and 2D graphical representations to explain how the multiplicative white noise influences the exact solutions of the SRWE. We can infer that the introduction of multiplicative white noise disrupts the symmetry of the solutions and serves to stabilize the solutions of the SRWE

    Effect of resistive training on gastrointestinal cancer cachexia

    Purpose: The current study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of resistive training in reducing the effect of cancer cachexia. Subjects and Methods: Thirty patients with gastrointestinal cancer cachexia participated in this study. Their ages ranged from 50-70 years. They were recruited from Al Kasr El-Ani hospital outpatient clinic to be treated in the outpatient clinic, Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University and were divided randomly into two equal groups.Group (A) composed of 15 patients who received their ordinary medical treatment in addition to resistive training program 2 times per week for 8 weeks. Group (B) composed of 15 patients who received their ordinary medical treatment. &nbsp;Methods of assesment was measurements of Handgrip strength assessed by handgrip dynamometry, Lower body strength &nbsp;assessed using a 30-second sit to stand test, Lean body mass &nbsp;assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Results: There was a significant increase in both muscle strength and lean body mass in patient who received resistive training. Conclusion: Resistive training can be considered as an effective method in decreasing severity of cancer cachexia in gastrointestinal cancer patient

    Incidence of kidney stones with topiramate treatment in pediatric patients.

    Purpose: We ran this study to assess the incidence of nephrolithiasis in a group of children on topiramate (TPM) therapy for at least 1 year. Methods: In this retrospective observational surveillance study, we reviewed the medical charts of children on TPM for at least 1 year seen at the pediatric neurology department during the period from 2005 to 2010 at King Fahad Medical City. Children with a normal baseline ultrasound report were included. Follow-up ultrasound reports after at least 1 year were collected. However, patients with any evidence of chronic illness or medications that may affect the kidney functions in addition to those who are not compliant with the prescribed dose were excluded. Family history of renal stones, symptoms suggestive of urologic disorders, and comorbidities were recorded. Key Findings: Medical charts of 96 children on TPM with a mean age of 6.9 (±3.8) years were reviewed; 52 (54.2%) of the children were male. The follow-up ultrasound showed that five children (5.2%) had developed kidney stones. The occurrence of kidney stones was found in four female patients (80%) versus one male (20%) (p > 0.05). Significance: Long-term use of TPM may result in increased incidence of asymptomatic kidney stones in the pediatric population. Hence, routine baseline and follow-up ultrasound of the urinary system should be recommended during the use of TPM in children
