    Towards Evidence Based M-Health Application Design in Cancer Patient Healthy Lifestyle Interventions

    Cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases in Europe and the world. Significant correlations between dietary habits and cancer incidence and mortality have been confirmed by the literature. Physical activity habits are also directly implicated in the incidence of cancer. Lifestyle behaviour change may be benefited by using mobile technology to deliver health behaviour interventions. M-Health offers a promising cost-efficient approach to deliver en-masse interventions. Smartphone apps with constructs such as gamification and personalized have shown potential for helping individuals lose weight and maintain healthy lifestyle habits. However, evidence-based content and theory-based strategies have not been incorporated by those apps systematically yet. The aim of the current work is to put the foundations for a methodologically rigorous exploration of wellness/health intervention literature/app landscape towards detailed design specifications for connected health m-apps. In this context, both the overall work plan is described as well as the details for the significant steps of application space and literature space review. Both strategies for research and initial outcomes of it are presented.     Design of Loss Functions for Solving Inverse Problems using Deep Learning

    Solving inverse problems is a crucial task in several applications that strongly a ffect our daily lives, including multiple engineering fields, military operations, and/or energy production. There exist different methods for solving inverse problems, including gradient based methods, statistics based methods, and Deep Learning (DL) methods. In this work, we focus on the latest. Speci fically, we study the design of proper loss functions for dealing with inverse problems using DL. To do this, we introduce a simple benchmark problem with known analytical solution. Then, we propose multiple loss functions and compare their performance when applied to our benchmark example problem. In addition, we analyze how to improve the approximation of the forward function by: (a) considering a Hermite-type interpolation loss function, and (b) reducing the number of samples for the forward training in the Encoder-Decoder method.     Fragility and hysteretic creep in frictional granular jamming

    The granular jamming transition is experimentally investigated in a two-dimensional system of frictional, bi-dispersed disks subject to quasi-static, uniaxial compression at zero granular temperature. Currently accepted results show the jamming transition occurs at a critical packing fraction ϕc\phi_c. In contrast, we observe the first compression cycle exhibits {\it fragility} - metastable configuration with simultaneous jammed and un-jammed clusters - over a small interval in packing fraction (ϕ1<ϕ<ϕ2\phi_1 < \phi < \phi_2). The fragile state separates the two conditions that define ϕc\phi_c with an exponential rise in pressure starting at ϕ1\phi_1 and an exponential fall in disk displacements ending at ϕ2\phi_2. The results are explained through a percolation mechanism of stressed contacts where cluster growth exhibits strong spatial correlation with disk displacements. Measurements with several disk materials of varying elastic moduli EE and friction coefficients μ\mu, show friction directly controls the start of the fragile state, but indirectly controls the exponential slope. Additionally, we experimentally confirm recent predictions relating the dependence of ϕc\phi_c on μ\mu. Under repetitive loading (compression), the system exhibits hysteresis in pressure, and the onset ϕc\phi_c increases slowly with repetition number. This friction induced hysteretic creep is interpreted as the granular pack's evolution from a metastable to an eventual structurally stable configuration. It is shown to depend upon the quasi-static step size Δϕ\Delta \phi which provides the only perturbative mechanism in the experimental protocol, and the friction coefficient μ\mu which acts to stabilize the pack.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Relativistic nature of a magnetoelectric modulus of Cr_2O_3-crystals: a new 4-dimensional pseudoscalar and its measurement

    Earlier, the magnetoelectric effect of chromium sesquioxide Cr_2O_3 has been determined experimentally as a function of temperature. One measures the electric field-induced magnetization on Cr_2O_3 crystals or the magnetic field-induced polarization. From the magnetoelectric moduli of Cr_2O_3 we extract a 4-dimensional relativistic invariant pseudoscalar α~\widetilde{\alpha}. It is temperature dependent and of the order of 10^{-4}/Z_0, with Z_0 as vacuum impedance. We show that the new pseudoscalar is odd under parity transformation and odd under time inversion. Moreover, α~\widetilde{\alpha} is for Cr_2O_3 what Tellegen's gyrator is for two port theory, the axion field for axion electrodynamics, and the PEMC (perfect electromagnetic conductor) for electrical engineering.Comment: Revtex, 36 pages, 9 figures (submitted in low resolution, better quality figures are available from the authors

    Quantum critical behavior in the heavy Fermion single crystal Ce(Ni0.935_{0.935}Pd0.065_{0.065})2_2Ge2_2

    We have performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal of the heavy Fermion compound Ce(Ni0.935_{0.935}Pd0.065_{0.065})2_2Ge2_2, which is believed to be close to a quantum critical point (QCP) at T = 0. At lowest temperature(1.8-3.5 K), the magnetic susceptibility behaves as χ(T)χ(0)\chi(T)-\chi (0) \propto T1/6T^{-1/6} with χ(0)=0.032×106\chi (0) = 0.032 \times 10^{-6} m3^3/mole (0.0025 emu/mole). For T<T< 1 K, the specific heat can be fit to the formula ΔC/T=γ0T1/2\Delta C/T = \gamma_0 - T^{1/2} with γ0\gamma_0 of order 700 mJ/mole-K2^2. The resistivity behaves as ρ=ρ0+AT3/2\rho = \rho_0 + AT^{3/2} for temperatures below 2 K. This low temperature behavior for γ(T)\gamma (T) and ρ(T)\rho (T) is in accord with the SCR theory of Moriya and Takimoto\cite{Moriya}. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra show a broad peak near 1.5 meV that appears to be independent of QQ; we interpret this as Kondo scattering with TK=T_K = 17 K. In addition, the scattering is enhanced near QQ=(1/2, 1/2, 0) with maximum scattering at ΔE\Delta E = 0.45 meV; we interpret this as scattering from antiferromagnetic fluctuations near the antiferromagnetic QCP.Comment: to be published in J.     En Chile la producción de aves y cerdos se concentra en unidades de producción industrial con altosestándares de productividad, calidad y bioseguridad. Este sector industrial concentra más del 85% de laspoblaciones de aves y cerdos en el país.Sin embargo, existen otras formas de producción animal. Una de ellas está en manos de pequeñosproductores, y se denomina como "producción animal de traspatio", que en Chile estaría representada pormás de 150 mil productores, 3,7 millones de aves y 400 mil cerdos.Los sistemas de producción animal de traspatio (SPT) son considerados como la forma de producción animalmás común a nivel mundial. Además, se reconoce que la mantención de estas unidades productivas juega unrol relevante para subsistencia de pequeños agricultores y su grupo familiar, siendo principalmente uncomplemento a las fuentes de alimentación que generan recursos económicos esporádicos. Sin embargo, segeneraliza a estas unidades productivas como poseedoras de severas deficiencias en bioseguridad

    Multivariate analysis of Vitis subgenus Vitis seed morphology

    We studied 142 grapevine seed samples belonging to 5 Vitis species, 92 cultivars of Vitis vinifera, 12 feral/wild populations and 4 hybrid rootstock cultivars. Eleven different characters from the seed and one allometric index have been used. Seeds show a wide range of variation in body dimensions, and in other parameters. Two largely differentiated clusters were obtained. Coincidences with previous seed classifications are discussed. Wild extra-European species have smaller seeds. The index breadth/length (STUMMER’s index) doesn’t allow to separate wild grapevines and cultivars. It defines, however, the “wild syndrome” values above 0.8 corresponding to wild extra-European Vitis species, occasionally used as rootstocks. Ferals/wild individuals tend to display smaller berries and plumper pips than their cultivated relatives therefore “looking wild”. The multivariate analysis place together ferals/wild and related cultivars in their respective clusters and does not discriminate a cluster of wild European grapevine.

    The report presented herein describes the necropsy findings (red nodules over the linning of the proventriculus) in an adult female roadside hawk (Rupornis magnirostris) found in Veracruz State, Mexico.
