Social distancing restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic were declared in Finland in March 2020. Libraries followed Government recommendations resulting in limited library service delivery across a variety of sectors. This research investigates challenges experienced by public, special and academic libraries in the Helsinki metropolitan area focussing on library staff reflections of digital literacy services offered during the pandemic. A multiple case study, with an emergent mixed methods research design was utilised. All data was gathered online due to Covid-19 restrictions: Quantitative data originated from an online survey of library staff; library websites were also audited. Qualitative data originated from semi-structured interviews. Triangulation of the data enabled a clear understanding of digital literacy challenges and responses. Overall, the mixed methods design and the data collection techniques, encouraged reflection upon experience, which in return informed a rich picture of the multiple case study. Results demonstrated that digital literacy challenges existed, particularly related to reaching library customers requiring digital support. Finnish libraries did not differentiate information literacy from digital literacy, as both were perceived as part of library service. Library staffs’ reflections corroborated similar research, for example, the impact of teleworking, on technology use and social aspects of working from home. Recommendations include undertaking further research on special libraries and promoting reflective practice as a mechanism for better understanding the views of library staff

Undergraduate Student(s): Erick Infante, Abigail Guerrero, Johana Figueroa, Fransely Rivera, Sosa Edomwande, Berenice Lucio Research Mentor: Doreen Wagner Among nurses, do coping mechanisms make a difference in the reduction of reported emotional distress? Background: Emotional distress plays a vast role in a nurse\u27s mental health. The increase in emotional hardship, in recent years, has led to an increase in burnout and greatly contributed to the nursing shortage. The effects of patient mortality within healthcare workers is an issue that requires more attention and research. Therefore, the purpose of this research project is to analyze multiple research articles and determine which coping mechanisms show a reduction in emotional distress. Literature Review: Nurses go through large amounts of stress during their day-to-day work activities and in order to decrease said stress multiple coping mechanisms are used. This stress could not only include the stress from dealing with high maintenance patients but also from the amount of patients in their care, or a lack of teamwork. In the articles we viewed the most used coping mechanisms used by nurses to deal with these daily stressors varied but one consistent theme arose, the ability to communicate their grievances with others that understood what they were going through. Methodology: Several studies were systematically reviewed and were adapted from the EBSCOhost database. Articles were selected to further help in the study based on the key words: nurses, coping strategies, dying and end of life. The final twenty-four articles were appraised for quality, evidence level, and relative evidence to our guiding clinical question. Conclusion: It is hoped through these research studies, the use of identified coping mechanisms will benefit nurses by decreasing stress levels

Investigating the Relationship between Ethnicity and Degree Attainment

In January 2008, the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) presented their ‘Ethnicity, Gender and Degree Attainment Project’ report (HEA, 2008). Whilst the report does not locate clear causes for difference in degree attainment that can be directly linked to ethnicity and gender, it describes concerns from higher education institutions’ (HEIs) staff and students that black and minority ethnic (BME) groups are marginalised. While the HEA/ECU suggest that ‘[t]he causes of degree attainment variation with respect to gender and ethnicity were found to be unlikely to be reducible to single, knowable factors’ (2008, p.2), they do note that ‘even after controlling for the majority of contributory factors, being from a minority ethnic group…was still found to have a statistically significant and negative effect on degree attainment’ (ibid., p.2). The relationship between ethnicity, gender and degree attainment remains both troubling and uncertain

Differences in the relation between bone mineral content and lean body mass according to gender and reproductive status by age ranges

Get PDF
The present study aims: (1) to explore the influence of lean mass (LM) on bone mineral content (BMC), (2) to investigate the pubertal influences on the BMC–LM relation, and (3) to perform Z-score charts of BMC–LM relation, stratified by gender and reproductive status categorized by age ranges. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using 4001 healthy subjects between 7 and 90 years participating in the Health Workers Cohort Study. Of these, 720 participants were ≤ 19 years, 2417 were women ≥ 20 years, and 864 were men ≥ 20 years. Using Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), we measured BMC and LM. Participants’ pubertal development was assessed according to Tanner’s stage scale. To describe BMC–LM relation, simple correlation coefficients were computed. To produce best-fit equations, an ANOVA test was conducted. Z-score graphs for the BMC–LM relation were obtained. In general, the BMC–LM correlations were linear and highly significant. For boys, curves were virtually parallel, with similar intercepts and a progressive displacement of values toward the upper-right region of the graph, for each Tanner subgroup. For girls, curves for Tanner 1-2 and 4-5 stages were parallel; but, in girls Tanner 4-5, the intercepts were significantly higher by about +300–400 g of BMC (P < 0.001). For postmenopausal women, the curve was parallel to that for the premenopausal but showed a lower intercept (P < 0.001). We provide DXA reference data on a well-characterized cohort of 4001 healthy subjects. These reference curves provide a reference value for the assessment and monitoring of bone health in all age groups included in the present study.Fil: Denova Gutiérrez, Edgar. Get PDF
The aim of this research is to characterize the graphing practices in first semester Physical Engineering students in a lab context. An ethnographic methodology is used to collect data, and the paper follows a framework that considers Graphing a social practice. For the analysis, five components in scientific environments were used: ongoing concerns, standard practices, material resources, linguistic resources, and breakdowns. The intent is to account for the confrontations, difficulties, and participation of 44 students in the first semester of the Physical Engineering Program in the social graphing practice as they construct and interpret Cartesian graphs. A summary of the results obtained is presented, and a categorization of graphing components during the experimental practice is shown. This categorization allowed us to find some difficulties students exhibit when interpreting and constructing cartesian graphs.

Get PDF
