Testing Intra-Industry Trade Between Portugal and Spain [1990-1996]

    Get PDF
This paper shows how, in the period 1990-1996, economic integration between the two Iberian economies has deepened through intra-industry trade. The enquiry was led at the level of the main forty traded products. In this context, several tests have been made. Our analysis combines first the application of the Grubel and Lloyd index of the main forty products and the marginal intra-industry trade of Brulhart, and Brulhart and Elliot. On the basis of these indexes we defined our criterion for the selection of the competitive cluster of Portugal throughout the period. We have also considered the global intra-industry trade, in nominal and real terms, according to the method of Greenaway et al. In econometric terms we have tried to know which is the relation between the intra-industry trade index and the marginal intra-industry trade at the level of the main forty products, the results however were not unequivocal. The same is true as far as concerns the relation between the intra-industry trade index and the net export position at the level of the same products. Despite the fact that some attempts have been inconclusive, knowledge about Iberian trade has developed in a field essential to its upgrading, and the way is open for further research.intra-industry trade; marginal intra-industry trade; competitive cluster; net export position.

New records of moths (Insecta, Lepidoptera) from urban gardens on Terceira Island with new data on recently introduced species to the Azores

The urban Duque da Terceira Garden, in the main town of Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira, Azores), was investigated to describe the species composition of moths (Insecta, Lepidoptera). Moths were sampled with two methods: SLAM traps (between April and September 2017) and light trapping (two sessions in the summer of 2017). A total of 42 taxa were sampled with the addition of 19 new records for Duque da Terceira Garden, five of which were also new records for Terceira Island. The five species recorded as new for Terceira were subjected to an exhaustive taxonomic analysis. In addition, we revised the colonization status of some species. Our results show that urban gardens may help the establishment of exotic species and that it is necessary to monitor and control how these species established in urban environments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Comparative study of efficacy of nifedipine, nitroglycerin dermal patches and isoxsuprine as tocolytic agents in suppression of preterm labour 1-year study at navodaya medical college hospital and research centre Raichur

Background: Tocolytic agents are used to reduce preterm deliveries. Very few studies documenting the comparison of tocolytic agents viz. nifedipine, nitroglycerin dermal patches and isoxsuprine. Other drugs are not used due to their adverse effects. Objective was to study and compare the safety efficacy of nifedipine, nitroglycerin dermal patches and isoxsuprine as tocolytic agents in suppression of preterm labour 1 year study. Methods: This was a prospective case control study was conducted for a period of 1 year. Total 90 cases selected to study were randomly distribute in to three treatment groups viz. A, B, and C nifedipine, nitroglycerin and isoxsuprine respectively. Subjects in all three groups were evaluated for maternal pulse rate, palpitation uterine contractions and fetal heart rate in order to assess efficacy of each drug under investigation. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in age of woman’s in three different groups. Among (100%) subjects, majority of the cases i.e. (27.8%) primi gravida followed by multi (72.2%). Side effects of nifedipine was less when compared to nitroglycerine dermal patch and isoxsuprine i/v/o of headache (8.9%), nausea (1.1%), vomiting (1.1%), tachycardia (3.3%), palpitation (3.3%), hypotension (1.1%). side effects were statistically significant different between the treatment groups. There was no statistically significant difference with respect to APGAR score at 1 minute and 5 minutes. Conclusions: Oral nifedipine was found to be superior and efficacious as tocolytic agent as compared to transdermal nitroglycerin and intravenous isoxsuprine

Identification and Characterization of the Transcriptional Regulator ChrB in the Chromate Resistance Determinant of Ochrobactrum tritici 5bvl1

Ochrobactrum tritici 5bvl1 is able to resist to high concentrations of chromate through the expression of an inducible chromate-resistant determinant, found in a mobile element (TnOtChr), which carries the genes, chrB, chrA, chrC and chrF. The regulation of chr operon present in TnOtChr, which is controlled by a transcriptional regulator, ChrB, was characterized in the current work. Fusions of chr promoter, or chr promoter and chrB gene, upstream of a gfp reporter gene, identified the most probable promoter sequence within the tnpR-chrB intergenic region. This region contains an AT-rich imperfect inverted repeat sequence, which overlaps a part of the 210 sequence. The results of the in vitro DNA-binding assays with purified ChrB (His- or no-tagged) showed that the protein binds directly to the chr promoter region. In order to identify the ChrB functional domain for sensing chromate stress and for DNA-binding, site-directed mutagenesis of ChrB was performed. Among several single amino acid mutants, three mutants (R180; R187 and H229) prevented chromate induction without any modification to the protein’s stability. Interestingly, two ChrB mutants (R18 and R23) were constitutively active, regardless of chromate stress conditions, indicating that the residues most probably belong to the protein-DNA binding site. As such, the ChrB was classified as a transcriptional regulator that recognizes a specific DNA sequence, regulating the expression of a chromate resistance determinant. This work was funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) under the PTDC/MAR/109057/2008 project.
