Evaluation of the concordance of sialometry and salivary glands scintigraphy in dry mouth patients

INTRODUCTION: Many diagnostic tests are used to evaluate dry mouth patients, especially the ones with Sjögren s Syndrome, to whom these tests are part of classification criteria for scientific studies. AIM: Thus, the concordance between results of sialometry and salivary glands scintigraphy was evaluated; if positive, it would enable the choice of one or the other for diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Seventy-two dry mouth patients were divided into non-Sjögren s Syndrome group, primary Sjögren s Syndrome group and secondary Sjögren s Syndrome group. The concordance among sialometry and scintigraphy results was evaluated by Kappa test. RESULTS: It was observed that their concordance was equal or near to zero. CONCLUSION: It is not possible to make a choice between these tests and both should be performed.INTRODUÇÃO: São utilizados vários exames para avaliar os pacientes com queixa de boca seca e, especialmente, os pacientes com Síndrome de Sjögren, em que estes exames fazem parte de critérios de classificação para estudos científicos. OBJETIVO: Desta maneira, procurou-se avaliar se haveria concordância entre os resultados da sialometria e da cintilografia de glândulas salivares para, se esta concordância estiver presente, optar por apenas um dos dois exames. CASUÍSTICA E MÉTODO: Foram avaliados 72 pacientes com boca seca, divididos em grupos não-Síndrome de Sjögren, com Síndrome de Sjögren primária e com Síndrome de Sjögren secundária. Os resultados de sialometria e cintilografia de glândulas salivares foram estudados, procurando-se dimensionar a concordância existente entre eles, através do teste de Kappa. RESULTADOS: Observou-se concordância igual ou próxima de zero entre os dois testes. Lymphoma's manifestations in Sjögren's syndrome: is there a relation?

SummarySjögren's Syndrome (SS) is considered a multisystemic chronic disorder, which is characterized by a lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands and autoantibodies production. Aim: Several studies have demonstrated increased incidence of Lymphoma in SS patients. Our study tries to determine this relation. Study design: Transversal cohort. Material and Method: Patients with Sicca's Syndrome from the Stomathology service, Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital, in Sao Paulo, ENT Department, from July 1999 to April 2002. Results: Out of 39 patients, 24 were diagnose as SS. Ages ranged from 19 to 83 years old, with predominance of women (69.7%). Time between the first symptoms and SS diagnosis were variable, ranging within 3.77 years. None of the analyzed patients developed lymphoma. Conclusion: Both SS early diagnosis and the increased risk of lymphoma's development in those patients are important, reason why long-term follow-up is essential. We observed that our findings were different from those in the literature. We did not detect any cases of lymphoma in our patients

O Centro Estadual de Educação de Jovens e Adultos de Presidente Prudente (CEEJA-PP) significa realmente espaço formativo?

Este trabalho foi desenvolvido no âmbito da Linha de Pesquisa “Políticas Públicas, Organização Escolar e Formação de Professores” do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Estadual Paulista (SP). No mundo contemporâneo, o acesso à escrita e à leitura e seu domínio são habilidades indispensáveis ao exercício da cidadania. Em 2007, havia, no Brasil, 14,2 milhões de pessoas, correspondendo a 10% da população com 15 anos ou mais, que se declararam analfabetos. A taxa de analfabetos funcionais, conceito criado pela UNESCO, alcançava, em 2007, o percentual de 21,7% do contingente populacional com 15 anos ou mais, o que representa 30 milhões de pessoas. Em vista de tais números, das defasagens educacionais e das determinações legais observadas na Constituição Federal de 1988 e expressas na LDB de 1996, o governo paulista implantou os Centros Estaduais de Educação Supletiva, hoje denominados de Centro Estadual de Educação de Jovens e Adultos. O Centro Estadual de Educação de Jovens e Adultos de Presidente Prudente, CEEJA-PP, atende, exclusivamente, a jovens e adultos que ficaram impossibilitados de concluir o ensino fundamental e médio em idade própria. Por considerarmos esse projeto fundamental para a democratização do ensino, realizar um estudo do CEEJA-PP é plenamente justificado, tendo em vista a premência dessa população para continuar seus estudos a fim de aumentar suas chances de participação plena da vida econômica, política e cultural do país e seguir aprendendo ao longo da vida. In 2007, there were in Brazil, 14,2 million people, representing 10% of population with 15 years or older who declared themselves illiterate. The rate of functional illiteracy, a concept created by UNESCO, reached, in 2007, the percentage of 21.7% of the overall population aged 15 years or more, which represents 30 million people. Seeing such information, the educational gaps and the legal determinations found in the Constitution of 1988 and expressed in the LDB of 1996, the State Government has implemented center's continuing education in State, today called the of State's Center of Education of Youth and Adult. The State's Center of Education of Youth and Adult of Presidente Prudente caters exclusively to young people and adults who were unable to complete the basic education and the high school in age appropriate.
