    Using Monte Carlo Search With Data Aggregation to Improve Robot Soccer Policies

    RoboCup soccer competitions are considered among the most challenging multi-robot adversarial environments, due to their high dynamism and the partial observability of the environment. In this paper we introduce a method based on a combination of Monte Carlo search and data aggregation (MCSDA) to adapt discrete-action soccer policies for a defender robot to the strategy of the opponent team. By exploiting a simple representation of the domain, a supervised learning algorithm is trained over an initial collection of data consisting of several simulations of human expert policies. Monte Carlo policy rollouts are then generated and aggregated to previous data to improve the learned policy over multiple epochs and games. The proposed approach has been extensively tested both on a soccer-dedicated simulator and on real robots. Using this method, our learning robot soccer team achieves an improvement in ball interceptions, as well as a reduction in the number of opponents' goals. Together with a better performance, an overall more efficient positioning of the whole team within the field is achieved

    Functional claims have caused many headaches for academics, judges and practitioners who have struggled to define precisely what constitutes “functional” claim language and to determine the proper scope afforded to broad means-plus-function claim elements. The debate between academics and judges regarding functional claim interpretation has typically focused on Congressional intent behind the statute, specifically whether 35 U.S.C. § 112, ¶ 6 was intended solely as a claim interpretation tool or only as means for narrowing functional claims during an infringement analysis. The Federal Circuit famously adopted a hybrid approach in In re Donaldson, but since then several authors have levied serious criticisms of the current framework. For practitioners, the trigger for evoking the statute has always been somewhat ambiguous and the Federal Circuit’s recent opinion in Massachusetts Institute of Technology v. Abacus Software only exacerbates the confusion. This comment consolidates the critiques of the Federal Circuit’s current approach and proposes that the perceived inequities of the current system can be resolved by adopting a separate claims prosecution process for functional claims

    Expression of transforming growth factor-beta isoforms and their receptors in chronic tendinosis

    Chronic tendon lesions are degenerative conditions and may represent a failure to repair or remodel the extracellular matrix after repeated micro-injury. Since TGF-ß is strongly associated with tissue repair, we investigated the expression of TGF-ß isoforms (ß1, ß2 and ß3) and their 2 signalling receptors (TGF-ßRI and TGF-ßRII) in normal and pathological Achilles tendons. In all tissues, all 3 TGF-ß isoforms and the 2 receptors were present at sites of blood vessels. Cells in the matrix showed no staining for TGF-ß1 or ß3, while TGF-ß2 was associated with cells throughout the normal cadaver tendon. Tissue from tendons with pathological lesions showed an increase in cell numbers and percentage TGF-ß2 expression. TGF-ßRII showed a wide distribution in cells throughout the tissue sections. As with TGF-ß2, there was an increase in the number of cells expressing TGF-ßRII in pathological tissue. TGF-ßRI was restricted to blood vessels and was absent from the fibrillar matrix. We conclude that despite the presence and upregulation of TGF-ß2, TGF-ß signalling is not propagated due to the lack of TGF-ßRI. This might explain why chronic tendon lesions fail to resolve and suggests that the addition of exogenous TGF-ß will have little effect on chronic tendinopathy

    Phage ϕC2 mediates transduction of Tn6215, encoding erythromycin resistance, between Clostridium difficile strains

    UNLABELLED: In this work, we show that Clostridium difficile phage ϕC2 transduces erm(B), which confers erythromycin resistance, from a donor to a recipient strain at a frequency of 10(-6) per PFU. The transductants were lysogenic for ϕC2 and contained the erm(B) gene in a novel transposon, Tn6215. This element is 13,008 bp in length and contains 17 putative open reading frames (ORFs). It could also be transferred at a lower frequency by filter mating. IMPORTANCE: Clostridium difficile is a major human pathogen that causes diarrhea that can be persistent and difficult to resolve using antibiotics. C. difficile is potentially zoonotic and has been detected in animals, food, and environmental samples. C. difficile genomes contain large portions of horizontally acquired genetic elements. The conjugative elements have been reasonably well studied, but transduction has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we show for the first time transduction as a mechanism for the transfer of a novel genetic element in C. difficile. Transduction may also be a useful tool for the genetic manipulation of C. difficile.Peer reviewe

    The epidemiology of clostridium difficile infection in Japan: A systematic review

    To increase understanding of the epidemiology, risks, consequences and resource utilization of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in Japan, a systematic literature review was undertaken of relevant publications from January 2006 to November 2017. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and methods, 55 articles met the criteria for full review. The majority (58%) of studies were from a single site, with the most recent data from 2015. The incidence, reported prevalence and recurrence rate of CDI in Japan were 0.8–4.71/10,000 patient-days, 0.3–5.5/1000 patients and 3.3–27.3%, respectively, and varied according to setting, population, CDI definition and detection method. Most C. difficile isolates associated with CDI in Japan were toxin A+B+, with a low level of C. difficile binary toxin-positive (CDT+) strains (0–6.8% reported across studies). The most common C. difficile PCR ribotypes associated with infection in Japan were smz/018, 002, 052 and 369. Data regarding the impact of CDI on length of hospital stay were limited. Reported all-cause mortality in patients with CDI ranged from 3.4 to 15.1% between 2007 and 2013. Two studies assessed risk factors for CDI recurrence, identifying malignant disease, intensive care unit hospitalization and use of proton pump inhibitors as factors increasing the risk of initial and/or recurrent CDI. No study analyzed initial CDI treatment in relation to recurrence. More comprehensive surveillance and coordinated studies are needed to map trends, understand risk factors, and recognize the extent and impact of CDI in Japanese patients

    Ka-band MMIC beam steered transmitter array

    A 32-GHz six-element linear transmitter array utilizing monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) phase shifters and power amplifiers was designed and tested as part of the development of a spacecraft array feed for NASA deep-space communications applications. Measurements of the performance of individual phase shifters, power amplifiers, and microstrip radiators were carried out, and electronic beam steering of the linear array was demonstrated. The switched-line phase shifters were accurate to within 7 percent on average and the power amplifier 1-dB compressed output power varied over 0.3 dB. The array had a beamwidth of 7.5 deg and demonstrated acceptable beam steering over + or - 8 deg. From the results, it can be concluded that this MMIC phased array has adequate beam-scanning capability for use in the two-dimensional array. The areas that need to be improved are the efficiency of the MMIC power amplifier and the insertion loss of the MMIC phase shifter
