    Considering the impact of situation-specific motivations and constraints in the design of naturally ventilated and hybrid buildings

    A simple logical model of the interaction between a building and its occupants is presented based on the principle that if free to do so, people will adjust their posture, clothing or available building controls (windows, blinds, doors, fans, and thermostats) with the aim of achieving or restoring comfort and reducing discomfort. These adjustments are related to building design in two ways: first the freedom to adjust depends on the availability and ease-of-use of control options; second the use of controls affects building comfort and energy performance. Hence it is essential that these interactions are considered in the design process. The model captures occupant use of controls in response to thermal stimuli (too warm, too cold etc.) and non-thermal stimuli (e.g. desire for fresh air). The situation-specific motivations and constraints on control use are represented through trigger temperatures at which control actions occur, motivations are included as negative constraints and incorporated into a single constraint value describing the specifics of each situation. The values of constraints are quantified for a range of existing buildings in Europe and Pakistan. The integration of the model within a design flow is proposed and the impact of different levels of constraints demonstrated. It is proposed that to minimise energy use and maximise comfort in naturally ventilated and hybrid buildings the designer should take the following steps: 1. Provide unconstrained low energy adaptive control options where possible, 2. Avoid problems with indoor air quality which provide motivations for excessive ventilation rates, 3. Incorporate situation-specific adaptive behaviour of occupants in design simulations, 4. Analyse the robustness of designs against variations in patterns of use and climate, and 5. Incorporate appropriate comfort standards into the operational building controls (e.g. BEMS)

    Epistaxis in Visceral Leishmaniasis with Hematological Correlation

    Objective. To study the prevalence of epistaxis in visceral leismaniasis and its correlation with hematological profile. Methods. Out of 80 diagnosed cases of visceral leishmaniasis, 19 patients with epistaxis were included in the study. Diagnosis was made by Rk-39 from peripheral smear and LD bodies from bone marrow. Before starting anti-kala-azar treatment, nasal examination findings and hematological profile were noted. Study Design. Prospective cross-sectional hospital-based study. Results. Epistaxis was found in the age group of 7–66 years. Epistaxis was observed in 19 (23.8%) cases. One patient died because of epistaxis and neck hematoma. Conclusion. Epistaxis is a common ENT finding in endemic area of visceral leishmaniasis like our case

    Development of an adaptive window-opening algorithm to predict the thermal comfort, energy use and overheating in buildings

    This investigation of the window opening data from extensive field surveys in UK office buildings demonstrates: 1) how people control the indoor environment by opening windows; 2) the cooling potential of opening windows; and 3) the use of an ‘adaptive algorithm’ for predicting window opening behaviour for thermal simulation in ESP-r. It was found that when the window was open the mean indoor and outdoor temperatures were higher than when closed, but show that nonetheless there was a useful cooling effect from opening a window. The adaptive algorithm for window opening behaviour was then used in thermal simulation studies for some typical office designs. The thermal simulation results were in general agreement with the findings of the field surveys. The adaptive algorithm is shown to provide insights not available using non adaptive simulation methods and can assist in achieving more comfortable, lower energy buildings while avoiding overheating

    Comfort driven adaptive window opening behaviour and the influence of building design

    It is important to understand and model the behaviour of occupants in buildings and how this behaviour impacts energy use and comfort. It is similarly important to understand how a buildings design affects occupant comfort, occupant behaviour and ultimately the energy used in the operation of the building. In this work a behavioural algorithm for window opening developed from field survey data has been implemented in a dynamic simulation tool. The algorithm is in alignment with the proposed CEN standard for adaptive thermal comfort. The algorithm is first compared to the field study data then used to illustrate the impact of adaptive behaviour on summer indoor temperatures and heating energy. The simulation model is also used to illustrate the sensitivity of the occupant adaptive behaviour to building design parameters such as solar shading and thermal mass and the resulting impact on energy use and comfort. The results are compared to those from other approaches to model window opening behaviour. The adaptive algorithm is shown to provide insights not available using non adaptive simulation methods and can assist in achieving more comfortable and lower energy buildings

    A vibration-based approach for the estimation of the loss of composite action in timber composite systems

    This paper presents a novel approach for the determination of the loss of composite action for timber composite systems using only measurements from non-destructive vibration testing. Traditionally, the composite action of a system is evaluated from static load testing using deflection measurements. However, static load testing is expensive, time consuming and inappropriate for existing flooring systems. The method proposed in this paper is based on the Damage Index (DI) method, which uses changes in modal strain energies, to detect locations and severities of damage. In the proposed method, a new Loss of Composite Action Index (LCAI), which is derived from direct mode shape measurements obtained from dynamic testing, is introduced to evaluate the loss of composite action. The proposed method is tested and validated on numerical and experimental models of a timber composite beam structure, which consists of two timber components that are connected with different numbers of screws to simulate various degrees of partial composite states. The results obtained from the new method are very encouraging and show a clear trend of the proposed dynamic-based LCAI in indicating the loss of composite action in the investigated timber composite structure. © (2013) Trans Tech Publicutions, Switzerland

    Recommendations for Effective Co-Management Model of Small-Scale Grouper (Serranidae) Fishery in South Sulawesi Province

    Governance (policy) that regulates fisheries resources needs to involve industry in the supply chain (market) and small-scale grouper fishermen (community) within a co-management framework so that management is more effective while simultaneously supporting the Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) which is driven by various parties globally (Conservation Alliance, 2021). This study aims to recommend a small-scale grouper fishery co-management model to be carried out in South Sulawesi Province. This study diagnoses the readiness (enabling condition) and willingness (motivation) of stakeholders so that they can be applied and implemented consistently (implementation). The results of this study indicate that the main approaches and strategies for the co-management model of small-scale grouper fisheries include (a) Optimizing the role of the market that promotes traceability and improving governance through a supply chain approach, (b) Synergy and synchronization of the role of government at all levels through an approach technocratic, (c) Strengthening fishermen and local institutions through a participatory approach, (d) Gathering multi-stakeholder support and collaboration through a collaborative approach. The recommended roadmap for small-scale grouper co-management in South Sulawesi Province includes three main stages, namely: (a) Initiation Stage: Commitment, Support, and Organizing, (b) Acceleration Stage: Joint Committee and Co-management Prototype, and (c) Stage Institutionalization: Scaling up and Organizing Fishermen's Forums

    Assessment of Pesticide Use in Major Vegetables From Farmers\u27 Perception and Knowledge in Dhading District, Nepal

    A field study was carried out to assess the pesticide use status in major vegetable crops from farmers\u27 perception and knowledge in Dhading, Nepal in 2019. Field study was carried with 100 commercial farmer\u27s using semi-structure questionnaire by face to face interview. This study was analyzed by categorization of farmers into small holder (51) and large holder (49) groups on the basis of mean area of vegetable cultivation (6.48 ropani). The highest amount of pesticides is needed in tomato in both large holders and small holders according to the farmer\u27s experience. Among the study farmer\u27s, 41% of them spray the pesticides by making a cocktail or mixed method and 56%  follow the waiting period of 3-5 days in both of the cases. A significant positive correlation was found at 5% level of significance between the knowledge and practice pattern of waiting period of the pesticides and negative correlation was found between the Personal Protective equipment score and health hazard score. Headache was the major health hazards faced by the farmers which was higher in small holders (66.7%) as compared to the large holders (46.9%). Mask was the most used PPE by the farmer\u27s i.e. by 83% in overall. Fourty three percent of the farmer\u27s throw the pesticide containers in secret place after using of it.The use of PPE was seen lower in small holders as compared to the large holders. This study reveals the necessities of suitable program and policies regarding the knowledge, safe handling and use of pesticide among the farmer\u27s level

    Bahasa Daerah Dominan di Kabupaten Malinau

    This article describes the dominant local languages with the highest number of USAge areas in Malinau Regency of North Kalimantan Province. The data in this article is based on and become part of the Research Repot on The Profile of Local Languages in Malinau Regency (Arifin, et.al, 2015). The research was designed in qualitatif approach and descriptive methode toward the local languages used in the daily communication of the people in the regency. Data colleting was done with interview and recording techniques. Data analysis was carried out with tracing technique. The decision of weather or not a status of a local language belong to dominant one is based on the intensity of USAge variabel. The criteria applied was that when a language is used in the daily communication by the largest number of population of a particular area (desa), the status of that language belongs a dominant one in that particular area (desa). Meanwhile a language with a minor number of speakers was labeled as the complementary language. Data analysis indicated that there are a total of 21 dominant local languages and another 7 complementary languages in Malinau Regency. Three out of the total 21 dominant local languages with the highest number of USAge areas are respectively as fallows: Punan Language 30 out of a total of 106 areas/desas (28.30%), Lundayeh Language 24 areas/desas (22.64%), and Lepuk Tau Language 8 areas/desas (7.54%)
