Distribution of lipids in non-lamellar phases of their mixtures
We consider a model of lipids in which a head group, characterized by its
volume, is attached to two flexible tails of equal length. The phase diagram of
the anhydrous lipid is obtained within self-consistent field theory, and
displays, as a function of lipid architecture, a progression of phases:
body-centered cubic, hexagonal, gyroid, and lamellar. We then examine mixtures
of an inverted hexagonal forming lipid and a lamellar forming lipid. As the
volume fractions of the two lipids vary, we find that inverted hexagonal,
gyroid, or lamellar phases are formed. We demonstrate that the non-lamellar
forming lipid is found preferentially at locations which are difficult for the
lipid tails to reach. Variations in the volume fraction of each type of lipid
tail are on the order of one to ten per cent within regions dominated by the
tails. We also show that the variation in volume fraction is correlated
qualitatively with the variation in mean curvature of the head-tail interface.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures (better figures are available upon request), to

Quantum resistance metrology in graphene
We have performed a metrological characterization of the quantum Hall
resistance in a 1 m wide graphene Hall-bar. The longitudinal resistivity
in the center of the quantum Hall plateaus vanishes within the
measurement noise of 20 m upto 2 A. Our results show that the
quantization of these plateaus is within the experimental uncertainty (15 ppm
for 1.5A current) equal to that in conventional semiconductors. The
principal limitation of the present experiments are the relatively high contact
resistances in the quantum Hall regime, leading to a significantly increased
noise across the voltage contacts and a heating of the sample when a high
current is applied
Import of cytochrome c into mitochondria
The import of cytochrome c into mitochondria can be resolved into a number of discrete steps. Here we report on the covalent attachment of heme to apocytochrome c by the enzyme cytochrome c heme lyase in mitochondria from Neurospora crassa.
A new method was developed to measure directly the linkage of heme to apocytochrome c. This method is independent of conformational changes in the protein accompanying heme attachment. Tryptic peptides of [35S]cysteine-labelled apocytochrome c, and of enzymatically formed holocytochrome c, were resolved by reverse-phase HPLC. The cysteine-containing peptide to which heme was attached eluted later than the corresponding peptide from apocytochrome c and could be quantified by counting 35S radioactivity as a measure of holocytochrome c formation. Using this procedure, the covalent attachment of heme to apocytochrome c, which is dependent on the enzyme cytochrome c heme lyase, could be measured. Activity required heme (as hemin) and could be reversibly inhibited by the analogue deuterohemin. Holocytochrome c formation was stimulated 5–10-fold by NADH > NADPH > glutathione and was independent of a potential across the inner mitochondrial membrane. NADH was not required for the binding of apocytochrome c to mitochondria and was not involved in the reduction of the cysteine thiols prior to heme attachment. Holocytochrome c formation was also dependent on a cytosolic factor that was necessary for the heme attaching step of cytochrome c import. The factor was a heat-stable, protease-insensitive, low-molecular-mass component of unknown function.
Cytochrome c heme lyase appeared to be a soluble protein located in the mitochondrial intermembrane space and was distinct from the previously identified apocytochrome c binding protein having a similar location. A model is presented in which the covalent attachment of heme by cytochrome c heme lyase also plays an essential role in the import pathway of cytochrome c
Accurate measurements of small currents using a CCC with DC SQUID read out
The continuous miniaturisation in the semiconductor industry increases the importance of accurate measurement and control of very small currents. In the field of precision electrical measurements, cryogenic current comparators (CCCs) are used as extremely sensitive and accurate instruments for scaling currents. In an international co-operation project, a special CCC system is being developed, optimised for the measurement of extremely small currents to less than 1 pA (10−12 A). DC superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) readout is used for monitoring the ampere-turn unbalance of the CCC. In this paper, we report on the accurate determination of the CCC and SQUID input coil inductances. Matching of these inductances is required for obtaining ultimate current resolution with the CCC. We find very good agreement between measurements of the CCC inductance at room temperature and at 4.2 K, and results from numerical calculations. The measured values for the input and mutual inductance of the SQUID sensor are in good agreement with the design values when the effect of the slit in the SQUID washer is correctly taken into account. Final current resolution of our measurement system is expected to be better than 1×10−15 A/√Hz for a CCC with 20,000 primary windings
Adaptation to Climate Change in the Transport Sector
In this study, we review the literature on climate change adaptation measures in the transport sector. Many of the measures proposed are rather conceptual and far from concrete, probably due to the fact that climate change effects on transport are either unknown or highly uncertain. Given the limited information on the potential magnitude of climate damages and the various uncertainties involved, postponement of adaptation investments may well be the most sensible strategy at the moment, especially when investments are substantial and irreversible. Furthermore, monitoring of relevant climatic changes and ongoing research into climate change effects are important elements of a pro-active adaptation strategy. Irreversible decisions, such as the ones on spatial organization, likely require a more active strategy, e.g. in the form of making spatial reservations. We further discuss the interdependency between optimal mitigation and adaptation, an issue that is often overlooked in the literature. Finally, most operators and governmental bodies are not used to dealing with risk and uncertainty, and generally base their decisions on single risk values only, likely leading to under- or overinvestment. We discuss several relevant topics in this area and highlight methods that can be used to better deal with these issues. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

Structure and Thermodynamics of the Mixed Alkali Alanates
The thermodynamics and structural properties of the hexahydride alanates
(M2M'AlH6) with the elpasolite structure have been investigated. A series of
mixed alkali alanates (Na2LiAlH6, K2LiAlH6 and K2NaAlH6) were synthesized and
found to reversibly absorb and desorb hydrogen without the need for a catalyst.
Pressure-composition isotherms were measured to investigate the thermodynamics
of the absorption and desorption reactions with hydrogen. Isotherms for
catalyzed (4 mol% TiCl3) and uncatalyzed Na2LiAlH6 exhibited an increase in
kinetics, but no change in the bulk thermodynamics with the addition of a
dopant. A structural analysis using synchrotron x-ray diffraction showed that
these compounds favor the Fm-3m space group with the smaller ion (M') occupying
an octahedral site. These results demonstrate that appropriate cation
substitutions can be used to stabilize or destabilize the material and may
provide an avenue to improving the unfavorable thermodynamics of a number of
