    Get PDF
In optical communication system, optical cross connect devices particularly an optical switch has become the main attraction for research due to its ability to route optical data signals without the need for conversion to electrical signals. Thus, it is important to develop optical devices such as optical switch with low power consumption and crosstalk for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) lightwave communication system. This project aims towards the design and simulation work of a polymeric based thermo-optic switch using Multimode Interference (MMI) structure to achieve low switching power capability and reduce crosstalk figure. The optical switch is designed on the 2x2 MMI cross coupler architecture of optical switch based on the general interference mechanism. Light propagation and thermal distribution through the optical switch is modeled using Finite Difference Beam Propagation Method (FD-BPM). Photosensitive SU-8 epoxy polymeric based waveguide material at core layers with PMGI at upper and lower cladding layer were chosen due to its low thermal conductivity and high thermo-optic coefficient. Further analysis has been performed by exploring the effect of heater‟s structure and its placement in order to reduce switching power. It is observed that by applying well-designed of heater‟s structure and suitable placement of heater, low power consumption as low as 9.05 mW with crosstalk level of -36.52 dB can be achieved

This study examined the relationship between the five dimensions of job satisfaction of the work itself, supervision, co-workers, promotion and salary satisfaction, with a dependent variable of organizational commitment. This study was conducted in SME Bank, one of the development finance institution (DFI) in Malaysia. Based on the data by Hewitt Associates, the turnover rate in banking and financial services in Malaysia is the second largest. High turnover among employees might jeopardize strategic plans to achieve organizational objectives. When an organization loses its critical people, there might be a number of negative impacts like reduction in overall level of innovation and quality of customer services. Therefore, organization commitment plays a very critical role in order to reduce the employees’ turnover. For this purpose, data were obtained from a sample of 150 employees in eight branches of SME Bank. The result tested on respondents/ sample to analyze the using descriptively, correlation and multiple regressions. The results showed that work satisfaction, supervision and, co-workers satisfaction were high. Meanwhile, the level of organizational commitment, promotion and salary were modest. The moderate level of organizational commitment indicated that the tendency of employees to turnover may also high. With these findings, it will become a turning point for SME Bank to identify steps that should be taken to enhance organization's commitment among its employees. This study also tested five hypotheses to determine the relationship between independent variables and dependent variable. The result shows that the dimensions of job satisfaction namely work satisfaction, supervision, co-workers, promotion and salary satisfaction have a significant relationship with organizational commitment. Overall, this study shows that job satisfaction is an important factor influencing organizational commitment. Therefore, this study suggests that the SME Bank should emphasize on job satisfaction in order to improve organizational commitment

Changes in technologies have changed our lives. Education field was not exempted from the current technology changes. Technology now plays an important role to improve accessibility in seeking knowledge and wisdom much faster and easier. The changes of Malaysia’s education system and worldwide generally have taken steps to lead the field in using trusted online access to benefit the education sector. Public and private institutions in Malaysia have been taking advantage from ease of internet access to provide its students with more secure and reliable information more effectively. Therefore, this study exploits the technology acceptance model established by Davis (1989) to examine the level of acceptance using Learning Zone as a portal that helps learning process. Technology acceptance model (TAM) established by Davis (1989) has three basic instruments of perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEU) and user satisfaction (US). However, intention to Use (IU) had been inserted in this study as a mediator to examine whether perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use will have an impact on the intention to use to achieve satisfaction. Students of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) which have access of using Learning Zone have been selected to participate in the study. A total of 391 usable data provide by the respondents is being used to achieve the objectives of the study. Therefore, correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to examine whether perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use will have the impact on user satisfaction. Generally, the correlation analysis shows that there is a significant and strong positive correlation between variables perceived usefulness towards user satisfaction; perceived ease of use towards user satisfaction; and intention to use towards user satisfaction

Having a knowledgeable and highly skilled human capital is an important factor for Malaysia to transform its economy towards achieving a developed nation and high-income status by the year 2020. Hence, the Malaysian government strives to improve the enrolment of local and international post-graduate students by providing an effective learning process to ensure their quality. This research aimed at describing the impact of critical thinking pedagogy using case-based learning in curriculum studies course among postgraduate students. It was a case study with qualitative approach. Interview technique was used in this study whereby five students who enrolled in curriculum studies course were selected as the respondents. The study sample underwent learning through critical thinking pedagogy using SCSCBL interactive application. Overall, the findings showed that the teaching approach of using the case-based learning can promote critical thinking skills among pre-service and in-service teachers. This study has provided positive implications on the postgraduates’ soft skill development as preparation for their future career

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a new world trend that will change the world forever. ICT will dominate the world in the 21st century. The emergence of the World Wide Web changed everything. In the education segment, webeducation promotes flexibility in getting education through online learning. Webeducation, also known as e-Learning provides the opportunity for students not to attend classes beyond the traditional on-class experience. E-Learning is a phenomenon as well as Mobile Learning. To have such an application like the Interactive e-Learning Portal, a computer device is mandatory. This study is to create guidelines as a basis to develop an Interactive e-Learning Portal. This study will present the guidelines to be used in the development of Interactive e-Learning Portal from the problem of identifying new learning tools that support the learning process. This project discusses the guidelines for developing the interface design and user interface technology as a learning object in supporting the learning process. It demonstrates how creating interactive interface can enhance traditional teaching methods and potentially provides virtual learning environments for online delivery

Effects of chromium powder mixed in electrical discharge machining of AISI D2 hardened steels

Nowadays, electrical discharge machining (EDM) is the non-conventional method that has been used extensively in machining hard material that is commonly used in mold and die industry but the limitations of EDM will cause lower productivity and poor surface quality. EDM becomes most apparent by using powder metallurgy electrode together with chromium (Cr) powder suspension into the dielectric fluid which has led to the increasing of productivity and good quality performance and characteristics. Therefore, by combining of both EDM parameters and machining conditions by incorporating with specific magnetic system plus integrated with existing filter system, it is highly expected that the machining speed can be enhanced. However, there are difficulties to determine the best combination of these machining parameters in order to increase the material removal rate (MRR) and at the same time to reduce the electrode wear rate (EWR) with the acceptable surface integrity. This research emphasizes the studies of Cr powder mixed in EDM machining of AISI D2 hardened steel using copper tungsten electrode which has been done successfully. Data were analysed using design of three factors at a time consisted of peak current (Ip), pulse-on (Pon) and powder concentration(C). Discussions were made on the responses such as MRR, EWR, Surface Roughness (Ra), surface morphology, recast layer (RL) and microhardness (MH) on the selected samples from the same machining conditions. Results have proved that Ip was the most significant parameter which has influenced the machining responses on Cr powder mixed EDM of AISI D2. It is also found that proper powder concentration of 2gram/litre enhanced the machining efficiency particularly in MRR. Furthermore, introduction of proper addition of Cr powder in the dielectric also decreased Ra and RL thickness. The EWR increased as the peak current increased, but inversely with pulse-on. In general, the possibility of EDM process for machining AISI D2 tool steel by incorporating Cr powder mixed in the dielectric is acceptable and the entire objectives were successfully proven
