Certification aspects of the fast gradient method for solving the dual of parametric convex programs
This paper examines the computational complexity certification of the fast gradient method for the solution of the dual of a parametric convex program. To this end, a lower iteration bound is derived such that for all parameters from a compact set a solution with a specified level of suboptimality will be obtained. For its practical importance, the derivation of the smallest lower iteration bound is considered. In order to determine it, we investigate both the computation of the worst case minimal Euclidean distance between an initial iterate and a Lagrange multiplier and the issue of finding the largest step size for the fast gradient method. In addition, we argue that optimal preconditioning of the dual problem cannot be proven to decrease the smallest lower iteration bound. The findings of this paper are of importance in embedded optimization, for instance, in model predictive contro
Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670) - ein Gelehrter Nebenan in Leszno
The topic is to understand Comenius experience in Europe in the context of
religious hatred, expulsion of populations adhering different Christian churches and
religious support for wars as in the so-called â30-yearsâ war in Central Europe or the
Swedish-Polish wars. This experience, as that of divergent scientifical trends in any
field of research in this paper, is considered to have given a powerful impulse to Comenius
to propose âPansophiaâ as âmediaâ for healing the corruptions in science,
politics and religion in a universal way. His concepts are to be found in a systematized
way in his opus magnum, inviting the âLumina Europaeâ to âUniversal Consultation
on the amendment of Human affairsâ. Finally reflection is given on how modern
thinking may inherit Comeniusâ thinking as to European affairs

Comenius und Europa - seine Erfahrung und seine Vision von Europa
The article discusses Comeniusâs experience in Europe in the context of
religious animosity, expulsion of people adhering to different Christian churches and
religious support for wars as in the so called â30-years warâ in Central Europe or the
Swedish-Polish wars. This experience, along with various trends in contemporary
scholarship, is seen to have given a powerful impulse to Comenius, who proposed
âPansophiaâ as a means to rectifying corruptions in science, politics and religion in
a universal way. His concepts were systematized in his opus magnum, inviting the
âLumina Europaeâ to a âUniversal Consultation on the Amendment of Human Affairsâ.
The article concludes with a reflection on how the potential uses of Comeniusâs
legacies in modern thought
The role of Si impurities in the transient dopant segregation and precipitation in yttrium-doped alumina
Y-doped alumina was sintered at 1500 degrees C for 10 h under ultra-clean experimental conditions without experiencing any abnormal grain growth. The yttrium was fairly homogeneously distributed at the grain boundaries, with a mean value of (Gamma) over bar (Y) = 5.5 at nm(-2). The Y-Al-O precipitates in the clean, Y2O3-doped alumina specimen were the YAP (YAlO3) phase, whereas only the YAG (Y3Al5O12) phase was present in the Y2O3-doped alumina samples contaminated with SiO2. The excess concentrations of Y and Si atoms at the grain boundaries that, at the same time, provoke the formation of structurally complex YAG precipitates and abnormal grain growth were both estimated to be at 4-5 at nm(-2). The compositions of the triple point pocket phases found in the region of the exaggeratedly grown alumina grains indicate the presence of alumino-silicate bulk liquids at the sintering temperature
Kinematic adjustments during successful and unsuccessful wolf jumps on the balance beam
The current study examined differences in the kinematics between successful and failed landings of a wolf jump on the balance beam. Subjects were 35 elite level gymnasts performing in competition. Discrete point analysis and Analyses of Characterizing Phases found that failed landings involved higher initial YY component of the inertia tensor, body angle in the X direction at takeoff and landing, and the Z-component of angular velocity during the descent of the jump (p < 0.05). While initial higher YY inertial tensor values may have been adjusted during the descent, it is possible that focusing on this factor may have prevented the gymnasts from dealing with the other error in body position; specifically the angle of the body in the X direction
Personality and attitudes towards current political topics
Riemann R, Grubich C, Hempel S, Mergl S, Richter M. Personality and attitudes towards current political topics. Personality and Individual Differences. 1993;15(3):313-321.We presented a representative list of 162 political issues currently discussed in Germany and the German NEO-FFI to 184 subjects (45% university students). Principal components analysis of the attitude items reveals four factors which are interpreted as (1) general conservatism, preference for authoritarian punitiveness, (2) social welfare and support of women's equality, (3) liberalism and affirmation of technological progress, and (4) affirmation of increase in taxation for environmental protection and the development of East Europe. The first unrotated factor is identified as general conservatism. The analysis of zero and higher order correlations shows meaningful relationships between political attitudes and personality dimensions. The highest (negative) correlations are found between openness to experience and conservatism. Age and sex effects on political attitudes are reported
