Differential Gene Expression in Liver, Gill, and Olfactory Rosettes of Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) After Acclimation to Salinity.
Most Pacific salmonids undergo smoltification and transition from freshwater to saltwater, making various adjustments in metabolism, catabolism, osmotic, and ion regulation. The molecular mechanisms underlying this transition are largely unknown. In the present study, we acclimated coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) to four different salinities and assessed gene expression through microarray analysis of gills, liver, and olfactory rosettes. Gills are involved in osmotic regulation, liver plays a role in energetics, and olfactory rosettes are involved in behavior. Between all salinity treatments, liver had the highest number of differentially expressed genes at 1616, gills had 1074, and olfactory rosettes had 924, using a 1.5-fold cutoff and a false discovery rate of 0.5. Higher responsiveness of liver to metabolic changes after salinity acclimation to provide energy for other osmoregulatory tissues such as the gills may explain the differences in number of differentially expressed genes. Differentially expressed genes were tissue- and salinity-dependent. There were no known genes differentially expressed that were common to all salinity treatments and all tissues. Gene ontology term analysis revealed biological processes, molecular functions, and cellular components that were significantly affected by salinity, a majority of which were tissue-dependent. For liver, oxygen binding and transport terms were highlighted. For gills, muscle, and cytoskeleton-related terms predominated and for olfactory rosettes, immune response-related genes were accentuated. Interaction networks were examined in combination with GO terms and determined similarities between tissues for potential osmosensors, signal transduction cascades, and transcription factors
A new parenting-based group intervention for young anxious children: results of a randomized controlled trial
Objective
Despite recent advances, there are still no interventions that have been developed for the specific treatment of young children who have anxiety disorders. This study examined the impact of a new, cognitive–behaviorally based parenting intervention on anxiety symptoms.
Method
Families of 74 anxious children (aged 9 years or less) took part in a randomized controlled trial, which compared the new 10-session, group-format intervention with a wait-list control condition. Outcome measures included blinded diagnostic interview and self-reports from parents and children.
Results
Intention-to-treat analyses indicated that children whose parent(s) received the intervention were significantly less anxious at the end of the study than those in the control condition. Specifically, 57% of those receiving the new intervention were free of their primary disorder, compared with 15% in the control condition. Moreover, 32% of treated children were free of any anxiety diagnosis at the end of the treatment period, compared with 6% of those in the control group. Treatment gains were maintained at 12-month follow-up.
Conclusions
This new parenting-based intervention may represent an advance in the treatment of this previously neglected group. The Emission Line Properties of Gravitationally-lensed 1.5 < z < 5 Galaxies
We present and analyse near-infrared spectroscopy for a sample of 28
gravitationally- lensed star-forming galaxies in the redshift range 1.5 < z <
5, observed mostly with the Keck II telescope. With typical magnifications of
~1.5-4 magnitudes, our survey provides a valuable census of star formation
rates, gas-phase metallicities and dynamical masses for a representative sample
of low luminosity galaxies seen at a formative period in cosmic history. We
find less evolution in the mass-metallicity relation compared to earlier work
that focused on more luminous systems with z - 2-3, especially in the low mass
(- 10^9 Msol) where our sample is - 0.25 dex more metal-rich. We interpret this
offset as a result of the lower star formation rates (typically a factor of -10
lower) for a given stellar mass in our sub-luminous systems. Taking this effect
into account, we conclude our objects are consistent with a fundamental

Observation and Modeling of the Solar Transition Region: II. Solutions of the Quasi-Static Loop Model
In the present work we undertake a study of the quasi-static loop model and
the observational consequences of the various solutions found. We obtain the
most general solutions consistent with certain initial conditions. Great care
is exercised in choosing these conditions to be physically plausible (motivated
by observations). We show that the assumptions of previous quasi-static loop
models, such as the models of Rosner, Tucker and Vaiana (1978) and Veseckey,
Antiochos and Underwood (1979), are not necessarily valid for small loops at
transition region temperatures. We find three general classes of solutions for
the quasi-static loop model, which we denote, radiation dominated loops,
conduction dominated loops and classical loops. These solutions are then
compared with observations. Departures from the classical scaling law of RTV
are found for the solutions obtained. It is shown that loops of the type that
we model here can make a significant contribution to lower transition region

The impact of coronary perforation in percutaneous interventions involving the left main stem coronary artery in the United Kingdom 2007-2014: Insights from the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society database
Background
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is increasingly utilized for treatment of coronary disease involving the unprotected left main stem (ULMS). However, no studies to date have examined the outcomes of such interventions when complicated by coronary perforation (CP).
Methods
Using the British Cardiovascular Intervention society (BCIS) database, data were analyzed on all ULMS‐PCI procedures complicated by CP in England and Wales between 2007 and 2014. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify predictors of ULMS CP and to evaluate the association between this complication and outcomes.
Results
During 10,373 ULMS‐PCI procedures, CP occurred more frequently than in non‐ULMS‐PCI (0.9 vs. 0.4%, p < .001) with a stable annual incidence. Covariates associated with CP included number of stents used, female gender, use of rotational atherectomy and chronic total occlusion (CTO) intervention. Adjusted odds of adverse outcomes for ULMS‐PCI complicated by CP were higher for peri‐procedural complications including cardiogenic shock, tamponade, side‐branch loss, DC cardioversion, in‐hospital major bleeding, transfusion requirement, and peri‐procedural myocardial infarction. There were also significantly increased odds for in‐hospital major adverse cardiac events (MACCE, OR 8.961, 95% CI [4.902–16.383]) and 30‐day mortality (OR 5.301, 95% CI [2.741–10.251]).
Conclusions
CP is an infrequent event during ULMS‐PCI and is predicted by female gender, rotational atherectomy, CTO interventions or number of stents used. CP was associated with significantly higher odds of mortality and morbidity, but at rates similar to previously published all‐comer PCI complicated by CP
Hubble Space Telescope Observations of the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal
We present an F606W-F814W color-magnitude diagram for the Draco dwarf
spheroidal galaxy based on Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images. The luminosity
function is well-sampled to 3 magnitudes below the turn-off. We see no evidence
for multiple turnoffs and conclude that, at least over the field of the view of
the WFPC2, star formation was primarily single-epoch. If the observed number of
blue stragglers is due to extended star formation, then roughly 6% (upper
limit) of the stars could be half as old as the bulk of the galaxy. The color
difference between the red giant branch and the turnoff is consistent with an
old population and is very similar to that observed in the old, metal-poor
Galactic globular clusters M68 and M92. Despite its red horizontal branch,
Draco appears to be older than M68 and M92 by 1.6 +/- 2.5 Gyrs, lending support
to the argument that the ``second parameter'' which governs horizontal branch
morphology must be something other than age. Draco's observed luminosity
function is very similar to that of M68, and the derived initial mass function

Genetic Variation in Cell Death Genes and Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
Background
Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of solid tumours that constitute the 5th highest cause of cancer mortality in the United States and Canada. Poor control of cell death in lymphocytes can lead to autoimmune disease or cancer, making genes involved in programmed cell death of lymphocytes logical candidate genes for lymphoma susceptibility.
Materials and Methods
We tested for genetic association with NHL and NHL subtypes, of SNPs in lymphocyte cell death genes using an established population-based study. 17 candidate genes were chosen based on biological function, with 123 SNPs tested. These included tagSNPs from HapMap and novel SNPs discovered by re-sequencing 47 cases in genes for which SNP representation was judged to be low. The main analysis, which estimated odds ratios by fitting data to an additive logistic regression model, used European ancestry samples that passed quality control measures (569 cases and 547 controls). A two-tiered approach for multiple testing correction was used: correction for number of tests within each gene by permutation-based methodology, followed by correction for the number of genes tested using the false discovery rate.
Results
Variant rs928883, near miR-155, showed an association (OR per A-allele: 2.80 [95% CI: 1.63–4.82]; pF = 0.027) with marginal zone lymphoma that is significant after correction for multiple testing.
Conclusions
This is the first reported association between a germline polymorphism at a miRNA locus and lymphoma
Observations and Implications of the Star Formation History of the LMC
We present derivations of star formation histories based on color-magnitude
diagrams of three fields in the LMC from HST/WFPC2 observations. A significant
component of stars older than 4 Gyr is required to match the observed
color-magnitude diagrams. Models with a dispersion-free age-metallicity
relation are unable to reproduce the width of the observed main sequence;
models with a range of metallicity at a given age provide a much better fit.
Such models allow us to construct complete ``population boxes'' for the LMC
based entirely on color-magnitude diagrams; remarkably, these qualitatively
reproduce the age-metallicity relation observed in LMC clusters. We discuss
some of the uncertainties in deriving star formation histories. We find,
independently of the models, that the LMC bar field has a larger relative
component of older stars than the outer fields. The main implications suggested
by this study are: 1) the star formation history of field stars appears to
differ from the age distribution of clusters, 2) there is no obvious evidence
for bursty star formation, but our ability to measure bursts shorter in
duration than 25% of any given age is limited by the statistics of the
observed number of stars, 3) there may be some correlation of the star
formation rate with the last close passage of the LMC/SMC/Milky Way, but there
is no dramatic effect, and 4) the derived star formation history is probably
consistent with observed abundances, based on recent chemical evolution models.Comment: Accepted by AJ, 36 pages including 12 figure
WFPC2 Observations of the Cooling Flow Elliptical in Abell 1795
We present WFPC2 images of the core of the cooling flow cD galaxy in Abell
1795. An irregular, asymmetric dust lane extends 7 \h75 kpc in projection to
the north-northwest. The dust shares the morphology observed in the H
and excess UV emission. We see both diffuse and knotty blue emission around the
dust lane, especially at the ends. The dust and emission features lie on the
edge of the radio lobes, suggesting star formation induced by the radio source
or the deflection of the radio jets off of pre-existing dust and gas. We
measure an apparent R significantly less than 3.1, implying that the
extinction law is not Galactic in the dust lane, or the presence of line
emission which is proportional to the extinction. The dust mass is at least
