    Civil Infrastructure Built on Alluviums and Recent Deposits, Such as Dams, Contain Significant Amount of Silts. the Static and Dynamic Behavior of These Fine-Grained Soils Has Been Investigated Less Than the Clay-Like or Sand-Like Soils. Low Plasticity Silts (PI = 6) Obtained East of St. Louis in Illinois Are Known as Loess that Has Been Re-Deposited by Water in the Floodplains of the Mississippi River. These Silts Were Reconstituted in the Laboratory by Slurry at Water Content above the Liquid Limit and Then Consolidated to an Initial Effective Stress. the Initial Laboratory Characterization under Monotonic Loading Included a Series of Consolidated Undrained Triaxial Compression Tests at Different Effective Confinement to Determine the Critical State Parameters. a Series of Stress-Controlled Cyclic Triaxial Compression Tests Were Run under Normally and over consolidated Conditions. the Liquefaction Behavior of the Silt at Different over Consolidation Ratios and its Relationship to the Monotonic Behavior is Presented and Discussed. © 2008 ASCE

    Biometric Data Comparison Between Lewis and Sprague Dawley Rats

    Introduction: Pressure mapping systems are often used for indirect assessment of kinematic gait parameter differences after repair of critical peripheral nerve defects in small animal models. However, there does not appear to be any literature that studies the differences in normal gait pattern of Sprague Dawley rats compared to Lewis rats using a Tekscan VH4 pressure mat system. The purpose of this study is to assess the gait profile of Lewis and Sprague Dawley rats generated by Tekscan\u27s VH4 system to detect similarities and/or differences in gait parameters involving both force and temporal variables. Materials and Methods: The gait profile of 14 Lewis and 14 Sprague Dawley rats was recorded using a Tekscan VH4 pressure map system with two successful walks per animal and gait parameter data was normalized for mean variance between the two rodent strains. Results: The results showed that temporal and normalized force parameters were not significantly different between the two types of rats. Maximum force, contact area, stride length, and adjusted pressure variables were significantly different between the two strains, likely attributed to the body size and weight differential between the strains. Variation in some of these parameters were considered due to differences in overall body size between the two strains, variations in gait kinematics between individual rodent subjects, and the limitations of the current experimental design. Conclusion: For future in vivo models, either Sprague Dawley or Lewis rat strains would be acceptable animal models when comparing base-line gait profiles using the Tekscan VH4 pressure map system when assessing critical defect repairs of peripheral nerves

    Patterns of Natural and Human-Caused Mortality Factors of a Rare Forest Carnivore, the Fisher (Pekania pennanti) in California.

    Wildlife populations of conservation concern are limited in distribution, population size and persistence by various factors, including mortality. The fisher (Pekania pennanti), a North American mid-sized carnivore whose range in the western Pacific United States has retracted considerably in the past century, was proposed for threatened status protection in late 2014 under the United States Endangered Species Act by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in its West Coast Distinct Population Segment. We investigated mortality in 167 fishers from two genetically and geographically distinct sub-populations in California within this West Coast Distinct Population Segment using a combination of gross necropsy, histology, toxicology and molecular methods. Overall, predation (70%), natural disease (16%), toxicant poisoning (10%) and, less commonly, vehicular strike (2%) and other anthropogenic causes (2%) were causes of mortality observed. We documented both an increase in mortality to (57% increase) and exposure (6%) from pesticides in fishers in just the past three years, highlighting further that toxicants from marijuana cultivation still pose a threat. Additionally, exposure to multiple rodenticides significantly increased the likelihood of mortality from rodenticide poisoning. Poisoning was significantly more common in male than female fishers and was 7 times more likely than disease to kill males. Based on necropsy findings, suspected causes of mortality based on field evidence alone tended to underestimate the frequency of disease-related mortalities. This study is the first comprehensive investigation of mortality causes of fishers and provides essential information to assist in the conservation of this species

    The celestial sign in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle in the 770s: insights on contemporary solar activity

    The anomalous concentration of radiocarbon in 774/775 attracted intense discussion on its origin, including the possible extreme solar event(s) exceeding any events in observational history. Anticipating such extreme solar events, auroral records were also surveyed in historical documents and those including the red celestial sign after sunset in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (ASC) were subjected to consideration. Usoskin et al. (2013, Astron. Astrophys. 55, L3: U13) interpreted this record as an aurora and suggested enhanced solar activity around 774/775. Conversely, Neuhäuser and Neuhäuser (2015a, 2015b, Astron. Nachr. 336, 225; 336, 913: N15a and N15b) interpreted "after sunset" as during sunset or twilight; they considered this sign as a halo display and suggested a solar minimum around 774. However, so far these records have not been discussed in comparison with eyewitness auroral records during the known extreme space-weather events, although they were discussed in relationship with potential extreme events in 774/775. Therefore, we reconstruct the observational details based on the original records in the ASC and philological references, compare them with eyewitness auroral observations during known extreme space-weather events, and consider contemporary solar activity. We clarify the observation was indeed "after sunset", reject the solar halo hypothesis, define the observational time span between 25 March 775 and 25 December 777, and note that the parallel “drawing of lunar halo display” in 806 in the ASC shown in N15b was not based on the original observation in England. We show examples of eyewitness auroral observations during twilight in known space-weather events, and this celestial sign does not contradict the observational evidence. Accordingly, we consider this event happened after the onset of the event in 774/775, but shows relatively enhanced solar activity, with other historical auroral records in the mid-770s, as also confirmed by the Be data from ice cores

    Exploring the relationships between adolescent alcohol misuse and later life health outcomes

    Background We sought to clarify the impact of adolescent alcohol misuse on adult physical health and subjective well-being. To do so, we investigated both the direct associations between adolescent alcohol misuse and early midlife physical health and life satisfaction and the indirect effects on these outcomes attributable to subsequent alcohol problems. Method The sample included 2733 twin pairs (32% monozygotic; 52% female) from the FinnTwin16 study. Adolescent alcohol misuse was a composite of frequency of drunkenness, frequency of alcohol use, and alcohol problems at ages 16, 17, and 18.5. The early midlife outcomes included somatic symptoms, self-rated health, and life satisfaction at age 34. The mediators examined as part of the indirect effect analyses included alcohol problems from the Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index at ages 24 and 34. Serial mediation and co-twin comparison models were applied and included covariates from adolescence and early midlife. Results There were weak direct associations between adolescent alcohol misuse and early midlife physical health and life satisfaction. However, there was stronger evidence for indirect effects, whereby young adult and early midlife alcohol problems serially mediated the relationship between adolescent alcohol misuse and early midlife somatic symptoms (beta = 0.03, 95% CI [0.03, 0.04]), self-rated health (beta = -0.02, 95% CI [-0.03, -0.01]), and life satisfaction (beta = -0.03, CI [-0.04, -0.02]). These serial mediation effects were robust in co-twin comparison analyses. Conclusions These results provide evidence that alcohol problems are a primary driver linking adolescent alcohol misuse and poor health outcomes across the lifespan.Peer reviewe

    Impedance spectroscopy characterization of neutron irradiated thermoelectric modules for space nuclear power

    The European Space Agency is currently supporting the research and development of advanced radioisotope power systems utilising thermoelectric modules. The performance of thermoelectric modules following exposure to neutron radiation is of significant interest due to the likely application of radioisotope thermoelectric generators in deep space exploration or planetary landers requiring prolonged periods of operation. This study utilises impedance spectroscopy to characterise the effects of neutron irradiation on the performance of complete thermoelectric modules, as opposed to standalone material. For a 50 We americium-241 radioisotope thermoelectric generator design, it is estimated that the TE modules could be exposed to a total integrated flux of approximately 5 × 1013 neutrons cm-2 (>1 MeV). In this study, an equivalent neutron dose was simulated experimentally via an acute 2-hour exposure in a research pool reactor. Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric modules with different leg aspect ratios and microstructures were investigated. Gamma-ray spectroscopy was initially used to identify activated radionuclides and hence quantify irradiation induced transmutation doping. To evaluate the thermoelectric properties pre- and post-irradiation, impedance spectroscopy characterization was employed. Isochronal thermal annealing of defects imparted by the irradiation process, revealed that polycrystalline based modules required significantly higher temperature than those with a monolithic microstructure. Whilst this may indicate a greater susceptibility to neutron irradiation, all tested modules demonstrated sufficient radiation hardness for use within an americium-241 radioisotope thermoelectric generator. Furthermore, the work reported demonstrates that impedance spectroscopy is a highly capably diagnostic tool for characterising the in-service degradation of complete thermoelectric devices
