Translation and Translanguaging Pedagogies in Intercomprehension and Multilingual Teaching
Since 2007, California State University, Long Beach has developed and offered courses that highlight students’ pre-existing linguistic repertoires in English and in the Romance languages. These courses are unique in that they build upon a multilingual base for the acquisition of new languages through the method of intercomprehension. As an approach that moves among languages, Intercomprehension places learners in conditions that are conducive to translanguaging and translation. This paper discusses the role of translation and translanguaging in Intercomprehension as a pedagogical approach in these courses. Since our students are constantly moving between English and one or more Romance language(s), they actively bring the other Romance languages they are learning into the translingual repertoire they already practice through the multilingual learning strategies deployed in intercomprehension.
This study addresses multilingualism in the paradidactic setting of telecollaboration. During
the Fall and Spring semesters of the 2018/2019 academic year, a telecollaborative program
was implemented with students from Roma Tre University (R3) who served as native Italian
speaker mentors and students enrolled in Italian classes at California State University,
Long Beach (CSULB). CSULB offers targeted Italian learning courses for the substantial population
of heritage speakers of Spanish to exploit the typological proximity of Italian and
Spanish through intercomprehension. The telecollaborative program employed two different
modalities: mentoring and partnership. In this study, we focus on the mentoring, to which
69 students participated: 15 native speaker mentors of Italian, (students of second language
teaching at Roma Tre) and 54 mentees (first-year Italian language students at CSULB, some
being speakers of Spanish). Our aim was to investigate the use of the languages in the linguistic
repertoire of mentors and mentees to determine whether there were important differences
between those who did and those who did not have Spanish as a heritage language in their
linguistic repertoire. To do so, we observed the occurrence of meaning negotiation episodes
and the languages used in 60 video-recorded Zoom-in-mentoring sessions of which the first
and last five minutes were transcribed and coded. The results show that HSSs benefit from
the presence of Spanish in their linguistic repertoire since they can use Spanish as a pivot
language while learning Italian.Istraživanje se bavi višejezičnoću u okviru paradidaktičkoga okružja telekolaboracije. Tijekom
dvaju semestara 2018./2019. godine na sveučilištu California State University (CSULB)
mentorstvo i partnerstvo.
ukupno 69 sudionika: 15 mentora, izvornih govornika talijanskoga jezika (studenata druge
jezika posrednika u procesu uÄŤenja talijanskoga jezika
Social categorization and joint attention: Interacting effects of age, sex, and social status.
In the present study, we examine how person categorization conveyed by the combination of multiple cues modulates joint attention. In three experiments, we tested the combinatory effect of age, sex, and social status on gaze-following behaviour and pro-social attitudes. In Experiments 1 and 2, young adults were required to perform an instructed saccade towards left or right targets while viewing a to-be-ignored distracting face (female or male) gazing left or right, that could belong to a young, middle-aged, or elderly adult of high or low social status. Social status was manipulated by semantic knowledge (Experiment 1) or through visual appearance (Experiment 2). Results showed a clear combinatory effect of person perception cues on joint attention (JA). Specifically, our results showed that age and sex cues interacted with social status information depending on the modality through which it was conveyed. In Experiment 3, we further investigated our results by testing whether the identities used in Experiments 1 and 2 triggered different pro-social behaviour. The results of Experiment 3 showed that the identities resulting as more distracting in Experiments 1 and 2 were also perceived as more in need and prompt helping behaviour. Taken together, our evidence shows a combinatorial effect of age, sex, and social status in modulating the gaze following behaviour, highlighting a complex and dynamic interplay between person categorization and joint attention
Gait Analysis in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Phenotypes
The objective of the present study was to describe gait parameters of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) phenotypes at early stage verifying the ability of gait analysis in discriminating between disease phenotypes and between the other variant syndromes of PSP (vPSP) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Nineteen PSP (10 PSP-Richardson's syndrome, five PSP-parkinsonism, and four PSP-progressive gait freezing) and nine PD patients performed gait analysis in single and dual tasks. Although phenotypes showed similar demographic and clinical variables, Richardson's syndrome presented worse cognitive functions. Gait analysis demonstrated worse parameters in Richardson's syndrome compared with the vPSP. The overall diagnostic accuracy of the statistical model during dual task was almost 90%. The correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between gait parameters and visuo-spatial, praxic, and attention abilities in PSP-Richardson's syndrome only. vPSP presented worse gait parameters than PD. Richardson's syndrome presents greater gait dynamic instability since the earliest stages than other phenotypes. Computerized gait analysis can differentiate between PSP phenotypes and between vPSP and PD
– Fabbrica Italiana Sintetici S.p.A.
Trial-by-trial modulations in the orienting of attention elicited by gaze and arrow cues
TRIAL-BY-TRIAL MODULATIONS IN GAZE AND ARROW CUEING
2
Abstract
Recent findings suggested that the orienting of attention towards gazed at locations (i.e., the
gaze cueing effect) could result from the conflict emerging in incongruent trials between the
spatial information conveyed by gaze direction and the target spatial position. In two
experiments, we assessed this hypothesis by investigating whether this effect is influenced by
the same trial-by-trial modulations that are reported in a spatial conflict task, i.e. the Simon
task. In Experiment 1 we compared the trial-by-trial modulations emerging in the Simon task
with those emerging in a gaze cueing task, while in Experiment 2 we compared gaze and
arrows cues. Trial-by-trial modulations were evident in both tasks. In the Simon task,
correspondence sequence affected both corresponding and noncorresponding responses, this
resulting in a larger Simon effect when the preceding trial was corresponding and an absent
effect when the preceding trial was noncorresponding. Differently, in the gaze cueing task
congruence sequence affected only congruent responses with faster responses when the
preceding trial was congruent compared to when it was incongruent, resulting in a larger gaze
cuing effect when the preceding trial was congruent. Same results were evident with
nonpredictive arrow cues. These findings speak against a spatial conflict account
