    Un gran número de bienes patrimoniales, representados por obras de arte, edificios y monumentos están construidos y/o revestidos por diferentes tipos de rocas de aplicación, que según su variedad y calidad definen y condicionan su durabilidad a lo largo del tiempo. Las rocas de aplicación en general son empleadas en usos estructurales mientras que un importante número de ellas son utilizadas desde tiempos pasados como rocas ornamentales por su valor decorativo.     Superconductivity in an Einstein Solid AxV2Al20 (A = Al and Ga)

    A cage compound AxV2Al20 (Al10V), that was called an Einstein solid by Caplin and coworkers 40 years ago, is revisited to investigate the low-energy, local vibrations of the A atoms and their influence on the electronic and superconducting properties of the compound. Polycrystalline samples with A = Al, Ga, Y, and La are studied through resistivity and heat capacity measurements. Weak-coupling BCS superconductivity is observed below Tc = 1.49, 1.66, and 0.69 K for Ax = Al0.3, Ga0.2, and Y, respectively, but not above 0.4 K for Ax = La. Low-energy modes are detected only for A = Al and Ga, which are approximately described by the Einstein model with Einstein temperatures of 24 and 8 K, respectively. A weak but significant coupling between the low-energy modes, which are almost identical to those called rattling in recent study, and conduction electrons manifests itself as anomalous enhancement in resistivity at around low temperatures corresponding to the Einstein temperatures.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, to be published in J.     Inter-sectoral and multilevel coordination alone do not reduce deforestation and advance environmental justice:Why bold contestation works when collaboration fails

    Policy makers, academics, and conservationists often posit that poor coordination between different land use sectors, and between levels of governance, as an underlying challenge for reducing deforestation and forest degradation. This paper analyzes this argument using data from interviews with over 500 respondents from government, nongovernmental organizations, private companies, local and indigenous communities, activists, and individuals involved in 35 diverse land use initiatives in three countries: Peru, Indonesia, and Mexico. We find that while there is strong evidence of widespread coordination failures between sectors and levels, more fundamental political issues preclude effective coordination. We argue that political coalitions act to oppose environmental objectives and to impede their opponents from participating in land use governance. Moreover, we find that where coordination between actors does occur, it does not necessarily produce environmentally sustainable and socially just land use outcomes. Where we do find successful initiatives to reduce deforestation and benefit local people, effective coordination between well-informed actors is often present, but it does not occur spontaneously, and is instead driven by political organizing over time by activists, local people, nongovernmental organizations, and international donors. We suggest that the global environmental community must recognize explicitly these political dimensions of land use governance in order to successfully collaborate with local people to reduce deforestation

    Early Proterozoic calc-alkaline and Middle Proterozoic tholeiitic dyke swarms from Central-Eastern Argentina: Petrology, geochemistry, Sr-Nd isotopes and tectonic implications

    The Rio de La Plata craton in Argentina (Azul and Tandil regions) is characterized by Early Proterozoic (2·0 Ga) calc-alkaline and Middle Proterozoic (1·6 Ga) tholeiitic dyke swarms intruding the crystalline basement involved in the Transamazonian Orogeny (2·2-1·9 Ga). The calc-alkaline dykes have andesitic and rhyolitic compositions and trend east-west, whereas the tholeiitic dykes mainly trend N30°W and are represented by basalts with low (0·9-1·7 wt %) and high TiO2 (up to 3·7 wt %). The calc-alkaline dykes have primitive mantle (PM)-normalized trace element patterns enriched in Rb, Ba, K, La, Ce and Nd, and significant negative Nb and Ti anomalies. These dykes are characterized by εt(Nd) values of - 3 to - 4, similar to those of the EMI mantle component. Low-TiO2 tholeiitic dykes have low incompatible-element (IE) contents and PM-IE patterns with slightly positive or negative Nb spikes. They have variable εt(Nd) values (-0·5 to 12·1), which mainly reflect derivation from a depleted source mantle. High-TiO2 tholeiitic dykes have more enriched IE-PM patterns and are characterized by εt(Nd) values (-1·4 to -7·5) typical of an enriched source mantle. Chemical and isotopic data and melting modelling indicate that both calc-alkaline and tholeiitic dykes originated by different melting degrees of a heterogeneous source mantle, the variable IE enrichment of which may have occured in Late Archaean to Early Proterozoic times. The emplacement of the calc-alkaline dykes is associated with the transtensional stage of the Transamazonian Orogeny, whereas the tholeiitic dykes reflect extensional tectonics succeeding the Transamazonian event. The calc-alkaline and tholeiitic dykes are similar in emplacement age and characteristics to metamorphosed granites and volcanic rocks outcropping within the Namaqua fold belts of southwestern Africa (Richtersveld and Witberg-Aggeneys-Gamsberg provinces); this may indicate that the Rio de La Plata craton and southwestern Africa were contiguous in Early-Middle Proterozoic times.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y MuseoLaboratorio de Entrenamiento Multidisciplinario para la Investigación Tecnológic

    REDD+ on the rocks? Conflict over forest and politics of justice in Vietnam

    In Vietnam, villagers involved in a REDD+ (reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) pilot protect areas with rocks which have barely a tree on them. The apparent paradox indicates how actual practices differ from general ideas about REDD+ due to ongoing conflict over forest, and how contestations over the meaning of justice are a core element in negotiations over REDD+. We explore these politics of justice by examining how the actors involved in the REDD+ pilot negotiate the particular subjects, dimensions, and authority of justice considered relevant, and show how politics of justice are implicit to practical decisions in project implementation. Contestations over the meaning of justice are an important element in the practices and processes constituting REDD+ at global, national and local levels, challenging uniform definitions of forest justice and how forests ought to be managed

    Help-Seeking Behavior in Victims of Elder Abuse: A Systematic Review

    Elder abuse has become increasingly relevant for intervention and study in the context of an aging population. One of the major barriers to progress in the field is underreporting of elder abuse by victims. This systematic literature review aimed to synthesize the available findings regarding victims’ help-seeking behavior to inform practice, understand the limits of the evidence, and identify research gaps. A comprehensive search of published and unpublished literature was undertaken, and studies were included if they addressed help-seeking behavior from the perspective of elder abuse victims aged 60 and older. A total of 19 studies met inclusion criteria for review. Findings are presented as a narrative synthesis organized according to help-seeking barriers, facilitators, sources of help, the responses of others, and the characteristics of victims more likely to seek help. Although barriers and sources of help received detailed attention across all studies, findings regarding victim characteristics and facilitators for and responses to help-seeking were limited. The results suggest that there are many barriers to help-seeking and that some victims only seek help when the abuse is perceived as unbearable or they fear for their safety. Results are discussed in relation to implications for intervention, including suggestions to enhance help-seeking behavior. Future research should identify facilitators of help-seeking among victims of elder abuse and victim characteristics associated with early disclosure. Research efforts should frame help-seeking as a continuing process and study ways in which the responses of others may impact future help-seeking or service engagement

    Proprioceptive Movement Illusions Due to Prolonged Stimulation: Reversals and Aftereffects

    Background. Adaptation to constant stimulation has often been used to investigate the mechanisms of perceptual coding, but the adaptive processes within the proprioceptive channels that encode body movement have not been well described. We investigated them using vibration as a stimulus because vibration of muscle tendons results in a powerful illusion of movement. Methodology/Principal Findings. We applied sustained 90 Hz vibratory stimulation to biceps brachii, an elbow flexor and induced the expected illusion of elbow extension (in 12 participants). There was clear evidence of adaptation to the movement signal both during the 6-min long vibration and on its cessation. During vibration, the strong initial illusion of extension waxed and waned, with diminishing duration of periods of illusory movement and occasional reversals in the direction of the illusion. After vibration there was an aftereffect in which the stationary elbow seemed to move into flexion. Muscle activity shows no consistent relationship with the variations in perceived movement. Conclusion. We interpret the observed effects as adaptive changes in the central mechanisms that code movement in direction-selective opponent channels

    Genome-Wide Survey and Expression Analysis Suggest Diverse Roles of Glutaredoxin Gene Family Members During Development and Response to Various Stimuli in Rice

    Glutaredoxins (GRXs) are glutathione-dependent oxidoreductase enzymes involved in a variety of cellular processes. In this study, our analysis revealed the presence of 48 genes encoding GRX proteins in the rice genome. GRX proteins could be classified into four classes, namely CC-, CGFS-, CPYC- and GRL-type, based on phylogenetic analysis. The classification was supported with organization of predicted conserved putative motifs in GRX proteins. We found that expansion of this gene family has occurred largely via whole genome duplication events in a species-specific manner. We explored rice oligonucleotide array data to gain insights into the function of GRX gene family members during various stages of development and in response to environmental stimuli. The comprehensive expression analysis suggested diverse roles of GRX genes during growth and development in rice. Some of the GRX genes were expressed in specific organs/developmental stages only. The expression of many of rice GRX genes was influenced by various phytohormones, abiotic and biotic stress conditions, suggesting an important role of GRX proteins in response to these stimuli. The identification of GRX genes showing differential expression in specific tissues or in response to environmental stimuli provide a new avenue for in-depth characterization of selected genes of importance
