Geometry of static perfect fluid space-time

In this article, we investigate the geometry of static perfect fluid space-time on compact manifolds with boundary. We use the generalized Reilly's formula to establish a geometric inequality for a static perfect fluid space-time involving the area of the boundary and its volume. Moreover, we obtain new boundary estimates for static perfect fluid space-time. One of the boundary estimates is obtained in terms of the Brown-York mass and another one related to the first eigenvalue of the Jacobi operator. In addition, we provide a new (simply connected) counterexample to the Cosmic no-hair conjecture for arbitrary dimension n4.n\geq 4.Comment: 21 page

Flow structure beneath periodic waves with constant vorticity under strong horizontal electric Fields

While several articles have been written on Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) flows or flows with constant vorticity separately, little is known about the extent to which the combined effects of EHD and constant vorticity affect the flow. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating how a horizontal electric field and constant vorticity jointly influence the free surface and the emergence of stagnation points. Using the Euler equations framework, we employ conformal mapping and pseudo-spectral numerical methods. Our findings reveal that increasing the electric field intensity eliminates stagnation points and smoothen the wave profile. This implies that a horizontal electric field acts as a mechanism for the elimination of stagnation points within the fluid body

Relationships among internal fat depots and subcutaneous fat in sheep.

The understanding of the relationships among the different adipose tissue depots as well as accurately predicting their masses is critical for animal growth modeling. Thus, the aims of this study were 1) to evaluate the phenotypic correlations among internal fat masses and subcutaneous fat thickness in sheep and 2) to predict the internal total fat mass using KPH fat weight and subcutaneous fat thickness information.Edição dos trabalhos do: ADSA-PSA-AMPA-ASAS-CSAS-WSASAS JOINT ANNUAL MEETING, 2012, Phoenix-AR. European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)The diagnostics of the autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), a rare disease caused by autoantibody-induced hemolysis, is still prone to false positives for it is based on visual observation in the so-called Direct Coombs test. In this study, we developed a specific IgG hemolysis immunosensor produced with layer-by-layer (LbL) films containing a monoclonal antibody against human immunoglobulin (mAbIMUG) deposited along with a layer of silk fibroin (SF) derived from Bombyx mori cocoons. Adsorption of mAbIMUG on a SF layer was confirmed by the fluorescence emission band at 326 nm. Immunosensors were prepared with LbL films deposited on interdigitated gold electrodes for impedance spectroscopy and on screen printed carbon electrodes for electrochemical measurements. When the SF/mAbIMUGLbL film was exposed to healthy red blood cells (RBCs), no cell binding was observed by the optical microscopy images. In addition, no major changes were observed in the signals of the square wave voltammogram and in the impedance spectra. In contrast, the electrochemical signal was significantly increased and the dielectric loss curve shifted for the sensing units containing RBCs with the antibody attached on the surface (“sick cells”). Furthermore, cell attachment was so strong that optical images still showed covered electrodes even after washing in PBS buffer. The detection with two distinct methods seems promising for an effective diagnosis of AIHA

Primary culture of Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) salivary gland cells

In the present paper, we developed a primary culture of Rhodnius prolixus salivary gland and main salivary canal cells. Cells remained viable in culture for 30 days. Three types of cells were indentified in the salivary gland cultures, with binuclear cells being the most abundant. The supernatants of salivary cultures contained mainly 16-24 kDa proteins and presented anticoagulant and apyrase activities. Secretion vesicles were observed budding from the cellular monolayer of the main salivary canal cells. These results indicate that R. prolixus salivary proteins may be produced in vitro and suggest that the main salivary canal may have a possible secretory role

J-PLUS: A wide-field multi-band study of the M15 globular cluster. Evidence of multiple stellar populations in the RGB

The Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) provides wide field-of-view images in 12 narrow, intermediate and broad-band filters optimized for stellar photometry. Here we have applied J-PLUS data for the first time for the study of Galactic GCs using science verification data obtained for the very metal-poor GC M\,15. Our J-PLUS data provide low-resolution spectral energy distributions covering the near-UV to the near-IR, allowing us to search for MPs based on pseudo-spectral fitting diagnostics. J-PLUS CMDs are found to be particularly useful to search for splits in the sequences formed by the upper red giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We interpret these split sequences as evidence for the presence of MPs. This demonstrates that the J-PLUS survey will have sufficient spatial coverage and spectral resolution to perform a large statistical study of GCs through multi-band photometry in the coming years.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. Results of endoscopic biliary drainage in patients with malignant hilar stricture

    Get PDF
In Malignant Hilar Biliary Stricture (MHBS) palliative biliary drainage is a frequent strategy, improving the quality of life, reducing pruritus, loss of appetite and relieving cholangitis. The endoscopic approach is an effective, although challenging procedure. This study aimed to evaluate technical and clinical success rates of biliary drainage by ERCP. This is a retrospective study including all patients with MHBS referred to Instituto do Cancer do Hospital de São Paulo (ICESP) submitted to biliary drainage by ERCP, between January 2010 and December 2017. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to evaluate predictors of clinical failure, as total bilirubin levels, Bismuth classification, number of hepatic sectors drained and presence of cholangitis. In total, 82 patients presenting unresectable MHBS were included in this study. 58.5% female and 41.5% male, with a mean age of 60±13 years. Bismuth classification grades II, IIIA, IIIB and IV were noted in 23.2%, 15.9%, 14.6% and 46.3%, respectively. Technical and clinical success was achieved in 92.7% and 53.7% respectively. At multivariable logistic-regression analyses, Bismuth IV strictures were related to higher clinical failure rates when compared to other strictures levels, with an Odds Ratio of 5.8 (95% CI 1.28‒20.88). In conclusion, endoscopic biliary drainage for malignant hilar biliary stricture had a high technical success but suboptimal clinical success rate. Proximal strictures (Bismuth IV) were associated with poor drainage outcomes

Histone deacetylases as new therapy targets for platinum-resistant epithelial ovarian cancer

Introduction: In developed countries, ovarian cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. Due to the nonspecific symptomatology associated with the disease many patients with ovarian cancer are diagnosed late, which leads to significantly poorer prognosis. Apart from surgery and radiotherapy, a substantial number of ovarian cancer patients will undergo chemotherapy and platinum based agents are the mainstream first-line therapy for this disease. Despite the initial efficacy of these therapies, many women relapse; therefore, strategies for second-line therapies are required. Regulation of DNA transcription is crucial for tumour progression, metastasis and chemoresistance which offers potential for novel drug targets. Methods: We have reviewed the existing literature on the role of histone deacetylases, nuclear enzymes regulating gene transcription. Results and conclusion: Analysis of available data suggests that a signifant proportion of drug resistance stems from abberant gene expression, therefore HDAC inhibitors are amongst the most promising therapeutic targets for cancer treatment. Together with genetic testing, they may have a potential to serve as base for patient-adapted therapies
