Sesame crops have large economic potential; however, the scarcity of good quality water in the Semiarid region of the Northeast of Brazil can affect production systems, which requires the search for cultivars that can better be adapted to the local conditions. In this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the germination dynamics of sesame seed lots subjected to different electrical conductivities of the imbibition solution. The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Seeds and Seedling Analysis of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Pombal campus, Paraíba, Brazil. A completely randomized design was used, in an 8×6 factorial arrangement, corresponding to eight seed lots (BRS Seda; BRS Seda (S2); BRS G2 (S1); BRS G2 (S2); BRS G3 (S1); BRS G3 (S2); BRS G4 (S1) and BRS G4 (S2), where S1 and S2 represent the grown environments, saline (2.4 dS m-1) and non-saline, respectively; and six electrical conductivities of the imbibition solution (0.3; 1.2; 2.1; 3.0; 3.9; and 4.8 dS m-¹), with four replications. The variables seed germination, vigor, germination speed index, mean time for germination, mean germination speed, and radicle length were evaluated. The sesame seeds are sensitive to salinity, regardless of the lot analyzed and their germination power decreases when they are subjected to high salt concentrations.Sesame crops have large economic potential; however, the scarcity of good quality water in the Semiarid region of the Northeast of Brazil can affect production systems, which requires the search for cultivars that can better be adapted to the local conditions. Okra is a vegetable of high nutritional value, but highly perishable when stored in natura. Cookies are products of great popular acceptance and allow the use of alternative flours. The objective was to evaluate cookies made with partial substitution of wheat flour for okra. Okra fruits were dried to obtain the flour. This was applied in biscuit formulations at concentrations of 0 (A), 5 (B), 10 (C) and 15% (D). The cookies were evaluated for the difference in mass, thermal factor, yield, humidity, ash, fibers, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, caloric value, presence of Coliforms at 45 ° C, positive coagulase Staphylococcus and Samonella sp., In addition to the sensory evaluation acceptance and purchase intention. The dough, ash content, fiber and protein of the cookies enriched with okra flour were higher. The carbohydrate content and caloric value was higher in formulation A. All cookies are within the microbiological standards required by law. Sensory acceptance and purchase intention were superior in formulations A and B. The differences between the cookies are due to the different composition of the okra and vary according to the concentration in which it is added. Formulation B obtained better nutritional quality without interfering with its good sensory acceptance.Okra is a vegetable of high nutritional value, but highly perishable when stored in natura. Ethylene triggers several deleterious responses on ornamental plants. This investigation aimed to evaluate several physiological responses to ethylene on the post-production of potted ornamental pepper cultivars. Plants of the ‘Espaguetinho’, ‘Etna’, ‘Peppa’ and ‘Karneval’ cultivars were grown in pots. When they reached the appropriate commercial stage, that is, 50% of the plants in a population showed at least 30% fully ripe fruits, they were treated as follows. Plants were subjected to external control, internal control, and exposure to 10 µL L-1 ethylene for 48 h. ‘Etna’ exhibited an intermediate response to the exposure to 10 µL L-1 ethylene for 48 h. ‘Espaguetinho’, ‘Peppa’ and ‘Karneval’ were classified as highly sensitive to ethylene, with discard on the first day of shelf life. The leaves from all cultivars showed a strong response to ethylene than the fruits. This study revealed different levels of sensitivity to ethylene depending on the cultivars and species. The exposure to 10 µL L-1 ethylene for 48 hours affects the quality and the longevity of the pepper cultivars evaluated, drastically reducing the shelf life. This study thus paves the way for further investigations to reduce ethylene responses, extending the shelf life in the post-production phase of pepper cultivars.O etileno desencadeia diversas respostas deletérias em plantas ornamentais.

The cultivation of ornamental peppers in places with high temperature and incidence of solar radiation limits the production and quality of plants and fruits. The colored shade nets were introduced and adopted, because they reduce the temperature and intensity of solar radiation, as well as, low cost and simple to handle. The aimed was to evaluate the production and quality of C. chinense and C. frutescens cultivated under colored shade nets. The experiment was developed in the Floriculture Sector of the Agronomy Department of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil from February to August 2021 in entirely randomized design.  C. chinense and C. frutescens were cultivated under red, pearl and aluminet nets with 35% shading and without net. At 150 days, production variables were quantified. The red net reduced the maximum temperature by at 4.1ºC and the pearl and aluminet nets reduced the minimum temperature by 3ºC. The maximum and minimum relative humidity was increased by 2.6 and 8.5%, respectively, by the red net. The pearl net obtained the lowest percentage of solar radiation incidence. Plant height was greater in the red and pearl nets, and C. frutescens. The diameter and stem fresh matter did not differ statistically between treatments. Root length was greater in the red and aluminet nets. The longitudinal and transverse canopy ratio was higher in C. chinense cultivated under the aluminet net. The number of leaves and leaves fresh matter was higher in pearl and aluminet net, and in C. frutescens, but leaves dry matter was higher in C. chinense. The number of flower buds and flowers, and flower buds dry matter was higher in C. chinense. The root fresh matter and dry matter was greater in C. chinese. The use of colored shade nets during the cultivation period effectively reduced temperature and light intensity. The aluminet net in association with C. chinense are recommended considering the compactness of height, pot coverage, greater number, shape and arrangement of fruits. The cultivation of ornamental peppers in places with high temperature and incidence of solar radiation limits the production and quality of plants and fruits. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is sensitive to the salinity of water and soil, a common abiotic stress in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil; however, such sensitivity is variable with water management in the soil-plant-atmosphere system. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the fertilization with nitrogen-potassium combinations in okra cultivated under salt stress. Photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange, growth and fruit quality were evaluated. Fertilization with N1:K1 (40% N + 40% K2O) reduced the damage caused by salt stress and increased the chlorophyll contents, while the application of N4:K4 (130% N + 100% K2O) decreased the damage caused by salt stress and increased the carotenoid contents. The combination of N:K fertilization did not affect gas exchange, however, salt stress decreased these variables. Fertilization with N2:K2 (70% N + 60% K2O) reduced the damage caused by salt stress and increased the leaf area of okra. In addition, salt stress decreased the number of fruits and increased the fresh mass of okra fruits. The N:K fertilization also reduced the damage caused by salt stress and in the soluble solids content, titratable acidity, SS/TA ratio, and ascorbic acid content. Thus, N:K fertilization can be seen as an important agronomic strategy to improve the performance of okra quality subjected to saline conditions.Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is sensitive to the salinity of water and soil, a common abiotic stress in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil; however, such sensitivity is variable with water management in the soil-plant-atmosphere system. The objective of this work was to evaluate the action of paclobutrazol (PBZ) on the growth and ornamental value of two pepper accessions and two commercial cultivars of ornamental pepper – Biquinho Vermelha and Bode Amarela. A PBZ aqueous solution (250 mL) was used to soak the substrate at 0, 20, 40, and 60 mg L-1 a.i. concentrations when the plants had 12 cm height. At the end of plant growth, the follwoing parameters were evaluated: plant height, chlorophyll content in leaves, number of fruit and leaves, and canopy compactness at the time the plants reached maturity to be marketed, with 30% of ripe fruit. Irrespective of the applied PBZ concentration, plant height diminished, and chlorophyll content increased. PBZ did not improve the ornamental characteristics of the genotypes 'Biquinho Vermelha' and 2334PB, which resulted in unsuitable plants for market requirements. For the genotypes 2345PB and 'Bode Amarela', the application of 20 mg L-1 of PBZ is the most indicated, and it results in plants with adequate ornamental characteristics required by the national market of flowers and ornamental plants.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a ação do paclobutrazol (PBZ) sobre o crescimento e valor ornamental de dois acessos e duas cultivares comerciais de pimenta ornamental – Biquinho Vermelha e Bode Amarela.

Growing peppers for ornamental purposes has strong appeal in the consumer market and abroad. This fact is due to the characteristics of profitability and adding value to the product. Moreover, the cultivation of pepper has great socio-economic importance due to the employment of large numbers of skilled manpower. However, the commercial success of this activity depends on the consumer appeal conferred by the harmony of the plant with the container used, which is obtained by pruning, substrates, regulators use different volumes of vessel, among others. Thus, this study aimed to determine the effect of different substrates and the application of pruning in the production of four pepper genotypes (Pirâmide Ornamental, Biquinho, MG 7073, BGH 1039). Evaluated two types of substrates: commercial substrate (Bioplant®) and Land of garden flowers purchased in local and two pruning conditions, plants with two stems and plants with three stems. There was no difference in earliness between plants grown in substrate Bioplant® and Earth Garden, in which the genotypes BGH 1039 and Pirâmide Ornamental reached the spot trading at 60 DAT. However, in this same period the plants of both genotypes that were developed in substrate Bioplant® showed higher plant height, total height, crown diameter, leaf number and number of fruits per plant. Therefore, all growth variables evaluated were affected by different substrates in all genotypes. Plants that have developed in the substrate Bioplant® had to be better developed. The pruning did not affect the precocity of BGH 1039 genotypes and Pirâmide Ornamental, which reached the ideal point of sale at 60 DAT. The pruning was not effective for the Biquinho and access cultivar MG 7073, it increased the size of the plants and the canopy became asymmetric respective. However, both were effective pruning conditions for access to cultivate and BGH 1039, Pirâmide Ornamental, providing a denser canopy without changing the height of the plants.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológic

Action of paclobutrazol and 1-MCP on the ornamental quality of Capsicum species

    No full text
The great genetic variability in the Capsicum genus there are plants with ornamental potential, but with higher not required by the market. In addition to the higher, some kinds of pepper have a low shelf life caused by sensitivity of the ethylene. The growing importance of pepper plants in the ornamental horticulture market, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of paclobutrazol (PBZ) and 1-MCP on the ornamental quality of ornamental pepper. The application of PBZ (0, 25, 50 and 75 mg L-1) was made on eight pepper genotypes from the Germplasm Bank of UFV. To access BGH 6371, the PBZ do not altering the architecture of plants. For the BGH and BGH 1032 1039 accesses the PBZ (25 mg L-1) resulted in ornamental plants with improved characteristics. Considering the cost/benefit, the best treatement was PBZ at 25 mg L-1 to BGH 4285 hits, BGH 7073 and MG. The PBZ in BGH 4355 and BGH 4199 reduced the plant height but do not improved ornamental characteristics, resulting in pattern without plant canopy. In a second phase of the study, we evaluated the sensitivity to ethylene seven genotypes of ornamental pepper plants (commercial varieties and access the Germplasm Bank of Universidade Federal de Viçosa). After exposure of pepper 10 μL L-1 of ethylene for 48 hours, it was observed that the flowers were highly sensitive to ethylene in all varieties except of ‘Pimenta colorida’ (moderately susceptible). Regarding the abscission of flowers, ‘Pimenta colorida’ and ‘Pimentão Ornamental’ were classified as highly sensitive to exogenous ethylene; ‘Pimenta Salsa Roxa’ was moderately sensitive and the other genotypes were insensitive to the hormone. The fruits responded by accelerating the color, except for the ‘Pimenta Laranja’ and ‘Laranja Ornamental’. When abscindiam, the highest rates were observed for the green fruit, followed by green-mature and mature fruits. The pre-treatment with 1-MCP, regardless of the applied concentration, was effective in blocking the action of ethylene reducing by 100% abscission of leaves, flowers and fruits of both the varieties. The pre-treated plants with 1-MCP increased the shelf life of eight and nine days to varieties ‘Pimenta Colorida’ and ‘Pimentão Oramental’ respectively. Therefore, the application of 1-MCP at a concentration of 0.5 g m-3 is effective in maintaining the ornamental quality and prolong the shelf life of ‘Pimentão Ornamental’ e ‘Pimenta Colorida’.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio
