    The Crisscrossing of Time in Spenser’s Amoretti LXXV and Shakespeare’s Sonnet XVIII

    Time is a prevalent motif in Elizabethan love sonnets, presenting itself not only as natural force to be reckoned, but also as an oppositional element in humanity’s constant search for immortality. Through the analysis of both Edmund Spenser’s Amoretti LXXV and William Shakespeare’s Sonnet XVIII I intend to explore, compare and contrast the representations of Time in their verses as well as the poets’ promises of immortality through their own writings. Drawing from Horace’s Odes and Ovid’s Metamorphoses as referential works in the discussion of Time in poetry, I will highlight how the struggle to survive the natural passage of time and its corrosive effects while having art as medium may have inspired both Spenser and Shakespeare’s efforts into building their own metonymical pieces of art. Through this work I hope to delve further into the motif of Time as a force that opposes the logic of stability and immutability often proposed by an art that promises the immortalization of one’s love interest

    Weaning of Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) postlarvae to an inert diet with a co-feeding regime

    The objective of this study was to evaluate the weaning success of Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis, postlarvae when co-fed a compound diet, by means of the analysis of growth parameters (relative growth rate [RGR] and condition factor [K]), survival, protein and lipid content. Total ammonia in the rearing water was also measured. The experiment lasted for 46 days (36 to 82 days posthatching). One group was fed only with enriched Artemia sp. metanauplii (Artemia treatment), whereas in another group, the Artemia sp. metanauplii were gradually replaced by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) diet over a period of 39 days (ICES treatment). Postlarvae were sampled on rearing days 0, 9, 23, 30, 39 and 46 for growth and biochemical analysis. Water was sampled on rearing day 30 during a 24-h cycle in both treatments. Postlarvae from the ICES treatment were weaned, though by the end of the experiment the Artemia treatment exhibited significantly higher values for growth, RGR, K and survival rates (P < 0.05). No significant differences were observed concerning total lipid content. Protein content was significantly higher for the Artemia treatment after 46 days of rearing (P < 0.05). El estudio se realizó mediante el análisis de parámetros de crecimiento (tasa de crecimiento relativa [RGR] y factor de condición [K]), supervivencia y contenido de proteínas y lípidos. La concentración del amonio total en el agua de cultivo también fue analizada. El experimento se realizó durante 46 días (de 36 a 82 días posteclosión). Un grupo de postlarvas se alimentó únicamente con metanauplios de Artemia sp. enriquecidos (tratamiento con Artemia), mientras que en otro grupo los metanauplius de Artemia sp. fueron gradualmente substituidos por la dieta del International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (tratamiento ICES) durante un periodo de 39 días. Las postlarvas se muestrearon durante los días 0, 9, 23, 30, 39 y 46 de cultivo para el estudio de crecimiento y el análisis bioquímico Las muestras de agua se tomaron el día 30 de cultivo durante un ciclo de 24 h en ambos tratamientos.     Human papillomavirus infection is associated with the development of malignant and benign neoplasms. Approximately 40 viral types can infect the anogenital mucosa and are categorized into high- and low-risk oncogenic human papillomavirus, depending on their association with the development of cervical carcinoma. High-risk human papillomavirus 16 and 18 are detected in 55% and 15% of all invasive cervical squamous cell carcinomas worldwide, respectively. Low-risk human papillomavirus 6 and 11 are responsible for 90% of genital warts and are also associated with the development of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Human papillomavirus preferentially infects mitotic active cells of the basal layer from both mucosal and cutaneous epithelium through microabrasions. The viral life cycle synchronizes with the epithelial differentiation program, which may be due, in part, to the binding of differentially expressed cellular transcription factors to the long control region throughout the various epithelial layers. This review aimed to summarize the current knowledge regarding the mechanisms by which viral gene expression is regulated and the influence of human papillomavirus heterogeneity upon this phenomenon. A better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms may elucidate the particularities of human papillomavirus-associated pathogenesis and may provide new tools for antiviral therapy

    Elemental characterization of the airborne pollen surface using Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA)

    Recent worldwide increase in pollinoses has been attributed to the synergy between pollen and pollutants. We used EPMA for the elemental characterization of the airborne pollen surface in order to find out what occurs to the wall of pollen grains when they are together with other atmospheric pollutants. Analyses were performed both to airborne pollen and to pollen that was collected from Acer spp., Platanus spp. and Pinus spp. trees. Airborne samples were assembled using a Hirst-type volumetric spore sampler set in the coastal city of Porto, Portugal. Airborne pollen samples showed major elemental differences when compared to the control pollen sample of the same species, namely in the amounts of Cl, Na and Mg, which very significantly increased on airborne samples, revealing an important influence of the ocean. Mineral dust also contributed to modify the pollen surface, by increasing Si contents on Acer spp. and Platanus spp. airborne pollen. Our results revealed consistent positive effects of the relative humidity and the precipitation in the increase of Cl, Na and Mg relative amounts on the pollen surface. This study shows that pollen grains have the ability to adsorb and/or absorb other materials, which may contribute to enhance pollen's harmful effects on people's health

Uma área a estudar no âmbito da IoT é a de gestão de projetos de tecnologias e sistemas de informação. A gestão de projetos aplica conhecimentos, competências e técnicas na realização de atividades relacionadas com um conjunto de objetivos pré-definidos, num certo prazo, com um certo custo e qualidade, através da mobilização de recursos técnicos e humanos. A IoT pode ter um papel importante ao possibilitar a criação de novas ferramentas para melhoria dos processos e técnicas da gestão de projetos. A questão que este trabalho procura responder é: Quais os impactos potenciais da IoT na melhoria da gestão de projetos?The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a new paradigm of integration of various communication technologies and solutions, having applications in many domains, such as agriculture, health, smart buildings and cities, security and surveillance, and in many other areas. One area of application that should be studied in the scope of IoT is the management of information systems projects. Project management applies knowledge, skills and techniques for carrying out activities related to a set of predefined objectives, in a certain period, with a certain cost and quality, through the mobilization of technical and human resources. IoT can play an important role by enabling the creation of new tools for improving the processes and techniques of project management.
