    Combining typing and size constraints for checking the termination of higher-order conditional rewrite systems

    In a previous work, the first author extended to higher-order rewriting and dependent types the use of size annotations in types, a termination proof technique called type or size based termination and initially developed for ML-like programs. Here, we go one step further by considering conditional rewriting and explicit quantifications and constraints on size annotations. This allows to describe more precisely how the size of the output of a function depends on the size of its inputs. Hence, we can check the termination of more functions. We first give a general type-checking algorithm based on constraint solving. Then, we give a termination criterion with constraints in Presburger arithmetic. To our knowledge, this is the first termination criterion for higher-order conditional rewriting taking into account the conditions in termination

    Window-Dependent Bases for Efficient Representations of the Stockwell Transform

    Since its appearing in 1996, the Stockwell transform (S-transform) has been applied to medical imaging, geophysics and signal processing in general. In this paper, we prove that the system of functions (so-called DOST basis) is indeed an orthonormal basis of L^2([0,1]), which is time-frequency localized, in the sense of Donoho-Stark Theorem (1989). Our approach provides a unified setting in which to study the Stockwell transform (associated to different admissible windows) and its orthogonal decomposition. Finally, we introduce a fast -- O(N log N) -- algorithm to compute the Stockwell coefficients for an admissible window. Our algorithm extends the one proposed by Y. Wang and J.     Forest fires: Evaluation of government intervention measures

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the relation between government measures, volunteer participation, climate variables and forest fires. A number of studies have related forest fires to causes of ignition, to fire history in one area, to the type of vegetation and weather characteristics or to community institutions, but there is little research on the relation between fire production and government prevention and extinction measures from a policy evaluation perspective. An observational approach is first applied to select forest fires in the north east of Spain. Taking a selection of fires with a certain size, a multiple regression analysis is conducted to find significant relations between policy instruments under the control of the government and the number of hectares burn in each case, controlling at the same time the effect of weather conditions and other context variables. The paper brings evidence on the effects of simultaneity and the relevance of recurring to army soldiers in specific days with extraordinary high simultaneity. The analysis also brings light on the effectiveness of two preventive policies and of helicopters for extinction tasks.Forest fires, policy evaluation

    Conditional maximum likelihood timing recovery

A new self-noise free CML-based timing error detector is derived.     Catalan government popularity. An example of economic effects on sub-national government support

    The aim of this essay is to deal with economic voting in contexts of multilevel governance and to be a contribution to the debate on attribution of responsibilities in popularity functions literature. We use aggregate and individual data from Catalonia in order to analyse the relation between the state of the economy and the support for a sub-state government. The empirical analysis shows that the responsibility hypothesis works in regional governments without explicit macroeconomic competencies. We have also considered the evaluations of government performance on certain specific policies in order to clarify and determine the factors that drive Catalan government support.     Non-data-aided frequency offset and symbol timing estimation for binary CPM: performance bounds

    The use of (spectrally efficient) CPM modulations may lead to a serious performance degradation of the classical non-data-aided (NDA) frequency and timing estimators due to the presence of self noise. The actual performance of these estimators is usually much worse than that predicted by the classical modified Cramer-Rao bound. We apply some well known results in the field of signal processing to these two important problems of synchronization. In particular we propose and explain the meaning of the unconditional CRB in the synchronization task. Simulation results for MSK and GMSK, along with the performance of some classical and previously proposed synchronizers, show that the proposed bound (along with the MCRB) is useful for a better prediction of the ultimate performance of the NDA estimators.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Robust beamforming for interference rejection in mobile communications

    The problem of robust beamformer design in the presence of moving sources is considered. A new technique based on a generalization of the constrained minimum variance beamformer is proposed. The method explicitly takes into account changes in the scenario due to the movement of the desired and interfering sources, requiring only estimation of the desired DOA. Computer simulations show that the resulting performance constitutes a compromise between interference and noise rejection, computational complexity, and sensitivity to source movement.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
